Application @steiger l.,
3 Claims.
My invention relates to cabinets and an object of my improvements is to acitate the movement of the drawers, or tills, and to ohviate irregularity or unevenness therein.
I secure this object in the apparatus i in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a longitudinal cross section vertical plane of cabinet embodying my invention, the iront wall of the casing and iron'J llanges or" the shelves of the drawer 1eeing orolren away, the drawer, or till, being shown as drawn out oi the casing;
Figure 2 is a plan View, the upper part of the casing and drawer being orolren away on t line 2-2 Figure l;
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation on the line 3-3 Figure l;
Figure l is a section on the line l-fl Figure except that the drawer is here closed and the shelves omitted;
Figure 5 is a section substantially on the line 5 5 Figure 4 the ball-bearing rollers being however, shown in full;
Figures 6, 7, 8, 9, and 1S are views similar to 25 Figure 3, lout diagrammatic in character, illustrating modified constructions.
As shown in the iirst five ligures the drawer, or till, is tall and narrow the access to the shelves being from the sides, when the drawer open,
30 shown in Figure l.
A is a casing having bottom 2, top sides l-l and loa-ck 5.
The numeral fi is used to designate four rack hars which are secured in tlie lateral corners, tween the top sott oit the ing A, with t inward.
and 3 bars in the A extend". transversely across the saine respectively at t top and bottom thereof, El is a plate secured at its ends to the cross oars and by screws 'le and other and with the teeth of the upper loa-rs ll-l l are similar pinions, Tcelow the cross 45 lower racks @-6. i2, l2 are cyli extending vertically bearing the cross liars 'l and 3 and having the pinions l@ and il keyed to their ends.
3b are arbore extending laterally from the 50 en l of the cross oar s above the lower racks "-t i-lS are hall-bearing rollers on the arbore engaging upon the upper sul "s oi racl. liars t-E, a supporting the ce.A y .ge consisting ofthe cross bars 'a' and 8, vertical plate S, shafts 1%?, Serial No.. 168,753
(Cl, l5-77) a-3 length of the vertical distance 1oetween bars t. il is a plate similar to the plate lf3 10 except that it is adapted to serve for closing the end of the casing A.
Ends of the frarnes lei and l5 are secured to the plates l and ll so that said frames will be held thereby in the saine plane and spaced from each 15 other so that the top of the frame it shall support the top, the bottom of the frame l5 the bottorn, the lower part of the frame lfl one of the shelves, the top of the frame l5 the other of the shelves constituting with the plates i6 and l'l the 20 drawer or till, of the cabinet which l will designate by the letter C. The plate E5 is rigidly secured to the plate t tounite the drawer C to its carriage B. drawer now be drawn out of the casing A, or moved therein, wholly supported by the carriage B which is'itself supported and carried by the leali-bearing rollers l3-l3 running upon the upper surfaces of the lower rack bars iZ=-'d.
When the drawer C is closed the plate il coinpletely closes the open end of the casing A.
i8 is a stop limiting the outward movement of the drawer C, but engaging the edge of the plate l wineL in Jhis position substantially closes the asi iff A.
5: sie
connected by 'the shafts l2 as described, and their engagement with the racks 5 holds the carriage B irinly in its vertical position and supports the drawer l its horizontal position no matter how40 loaded the latter may be, while the hall bearings 'C rollers running on their tracks on lie upper surfaces of the lower rack bars 6 5 alie the inov dents of the drawer C perfectly -asy and the o awer is carried without any sagor uneve Yless of motion.
While regard the alcove described construction as the preferred forni of embodiment of my invention it be modified in various ways as, for instance, shown in Figures tI-lG of the drawings.
in the form of wider, cross hars pinions .ltlf3 and ll l with each other directl and instead of the l severally engaging the shafts lib-l2 are 55 connected by a chain-and-sprocket gearing Illa, or a chain of interengaging pinions may be interposed between the gears lD-I D as shown in Fgure 7 at Ib.
In Figure 8 the rack bars 6a are provided with gear teeth also on their horizontal outer edges, and the cross bars 'ld and 8d, are provided with shafts and llc having pinions on their ends engaging the horizontal teeth of the rack bars 6a. In Figure 9 the construction of Figure 8 is shown omitting the shaft I ic and its pinions, and in Figure 10 the construction of Figure 8 is shown omitting the left hand shaft I2 and its attached pinions, the rack in the upper left hand corner of the casing A, the shaft |90 and its pinions and the cross bar Id, substituting for the latter the bearing block 'le united to other parts of the carriage B by the plate lSa.
It will be obvious that the gear wheels and connections should be so arranged and proportioned that the drawer at at least three points shall be constrained to move at the same rate and in the same direction I have for convenience, referred to the racks as located in the corners of the casing, in the following claims but it is to be understood that this is for the purpose of specifying their location with reference to the other parts of the operative apparatus only.
What I claim is:
1. In a cabinet the combination of a casing rectangular in cross-section, a drawer in, and adapted tol move horizontally relative to, said casing, a rack fixed in each of the two corners of said cabinet that are in a vertical plane, and gearing on said drawer engaging said racks and constraining the movement of said drawer adjacent to said racks to the same direction and the same rate.
2. In a cabinet the combination of, a casing rectangular in cross-section, a drawer in, and adapted to move horizontally relative to said casing, a rack xed in each of three corners of said casing, and gearing on said drawer engaging said racks and constraining the movement of said drawer adjacent to said racks to the same direction and the same rate.
3. In a cabinet the combination of, a casing rectangular in cross-section, a drawer adapted to move horizontally relative to said casing, a rack xed in each of the four corners of said casing, vertical shafts having similar gear wheels at their endsl revolvable in bearings, on said drawer and severally engaging each pair of vertically located racks, the gear wheels on said shafts engaging each other.
