IMPROVEMENT IN NOSE-CLAMPS FOR EYEGLASSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,864, dated October 21, 1879; application filed August 25, 1879.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN PERRIN, of Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Eyeglasses, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

My invention relates to eyeglasses; and it has for its object to produce a firm and comfortable nose-clamp.

It is well known that the usual con'vex roughened or corrugated nose-pieces of eyeglasses are quite painful and irritating to the nose when constantly worn, and they are also liable to slip off the nose.

My invention consists, essentially, in an eyeglass provided with a freely-yielding or soft nose -piece, consisting of india -rubber bands provided with pockets, and extended or stretched between band-holdin g projections "forming parts of the frames which hold the glasses.

In accordance with my invention, I provide each half of the usual frame with band-holdin g projections, from one to the other of which I stretch a band of india-rubber, preferably soft rubber,.which is formed with small pockets at its ends, to engage and be held by the said projections. This soft-rubber band, provided with end pockets or portions to engage the projections in the eyeglass-frame, is very l simple, cheap, and durable, may be easily and quickly applied by any one without screws or rivets, and is free to conform to the shape of and hold firmly upon the nose with a gentle but nniformly-distributed pressure, and does not, like a metal spring, present a hard surface to the skin.

Figure 1 represents an eyeglass made in accordance with my invention, one of the flexible rubber bands being removed Fig. 2, a rear view of one of the flexible rubber bands detached, and Fig. 3 a modification.

The frame a and spring I; may be of any usual construction. Near the inner ends of the frame, Where the usualnose-pieces are situated,

are two band-holdin g projections, 13 d, extended out so that a straight line joining their ends does not touch the portion e of the frame be' tween them. These projections may be formed in one piece with the frame, as in Fig. 1, or, if a metal frame is used, may be made as a separate piece, as in Fig. 3.

The nose-pieces i will be made as shown in Fig. 2, wherein a band of india-rnbber is folded over and joined together to form pockets to pass over the band-holding projections c d.

It will beseen thatthe flexible rubber band, between the points 0 d, is free to yield to press me toward the frame a, and thus conforms it self perfectly to the shape of the nose, and holds firmly thereon, without giving any unpleasant sensation or causin g' an y irritation.

I am aware that yielding metallic nose-pieces, and also elastic bands, have been used, joined at one or both ends to the frame by means of screws, clamps, and rivets. My nose-holding bands, besides forming a comfortable and firm clamp, are of simple construction, and may be made very cheaply.

In this my invention I desire it to be understood that I may incline the band'holding projections more or less with relation to the frame a, so long as the band does not rest against the frame when upon the nose.

I claim- 1. In an eyeglass, the glass-frame a, .pro-

. vided with projections to receive the ends of i the spring b, and two independent band-hold ing projections on each glass-frame, adapted to receive the ends of an india rubber noseband, combined with an india-rubber noseband provided with pockets to engage and be held by the said projections, all substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In" an eyeglass, a nose-embracing baud consisting of a strip of rubber provided with pockets at each end, adapted to receive pro- 1 jections from the frame, substantially as described.
