body, the cover. being adapted to be slipped off of and onto the body andbeing permanently hinged to thebody by a pintle which passes through a series of knuckles formed on the rear side wall of the body and the cover flange. Cooperating means on the front side wall of the body and the cover flange serves to yieldably retain the cover in closed position. To remove the cover it is necessary to grasp the container in one hand and then pry off the cover with the finger nail of the-other hand. Ordinarily, considerable force is required to remove the cover,
the cover is hinged to the body permanently in such. a manner that upon opening of the container, the cover may be swung throughout an angle of one hundred eighty degrees with respect to the body to completely uncover the contents of the container and facilitate access thereto.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a container of this nature in which the fulcrum axis for pivotal movement of the cover on the body is well forward of the effective hinge connection between the parts so that positive opening of the container will occur with the application of but a slight degree of pressure to the container.
Other objects and advantages of the invention, not at this time enumerated, will become apparent hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention, showing the cover in open position.
Fig. 2 is an endelevationalview of the closed container showing the hinge construction.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, certain parts being removedto more clearly illustrate the hinge construction; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the fullyfopened container. 0
In the drawing, a container body l0 of sub-.. stantially rectangular form with rounded corners includes a bottom l2 and continuous upstanding side and end walls I3 and M respectively.
A cover l5 conforming generally in configuration to that of the body It] having rounded corners II, and including a top It and depending side and end flanges I1 and 18 respectively, is permanently hinged to the body In, the pivotal connection betweenthe two parts consisting of a wire link or strap 19 which is generally of wide U-shape formation, the medial base portion of which passes through an upturned bead or knuckle 20 formed on the lower edge. of the rear end flange l8. The ends of the link are turned inwardly as at 2| and extend into apertures 22 formed in the side walls I3 of the bodylll. The
depth of the U-shaped link I9 is slightly in excess of the distance between the apertures 22 and the rear end wall M of the body l0 and thus the cover I5 is freeto swing about the axis of the base portion of the link I9 from the closed position illustrated in Fig. 3 to the fully open position illustrated in Fig. 4 wherein the bottom I2 of the body l0 and the top It; of the cover l5. occupy substantially the same plane.
Locking lugs 23 and 24 formed on the front cover flange l8 and front end wall [4 respectively serve to yieldingly maintain the cover closed on the body. l
Referring. now to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the inturned ends 2| of the link l9 pass through the side Walls l3 at points which are in the same horizontal plane and which are disposed a substantial distance below the upper edge of these sidewalls. When the cover is in its closed position on the body In, the lower edges of the side flanges I"! bear against these inturned ends 2| while the top |6 remains a slight distance above the plane of the upper rim of the body l0. Because of this latter fact, when pressure is applied to the container rearwardly of the region at which the inturned ends 2| enter the side walls l3, 1. e. adjacent the effective hinge connection at the rear of the container, the cover will be rocked upon the bodyabout the common axis of the inturned ends 2| in such a manner .as to release the locking lugs 23 and 24 and per- 1 at the rear of the container forms a continuation of the knuckle or bead 20 as shown in Fig. 2.
Modifications may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a metal container, a body having a vertical wall and a cover having a depending flange embracing the wall in the closed position of the cover, a substantially U-shaped link having its ends pivotally connected to the wall at opposed points thereon, there being a pivotal connection between the base portion of the U-shaped link and said cover flange, the lower edge of said flange engaging said link adjacent the ends thereof when the cover is in its closed position and being pivotally supported thereon.
2. In a metal container, a body having opposed pairs of upstanding side and end walls and a cover having opposed pairs of depending side and end flanges embracing the side and end walls respectively in the closed position of the cover, a substantially U-shaped link having its ends pivotally connected to the side walls at opposed points thereon medially of the end Walls, said link embracing a portion of each side wall and having its base portion extending coextensively with the rear end wall and spaced slightly therefrom, the rear end flange being pivotally connected to said base portion, locking lugs formed on the front end wall and front end flange and designed for cooperation in maintaining the cover closed, the lower edges of the side flanges being supported on the link adjacent the ends thereof when the cover is closed whereby the cover is tiltably supported on the body.
3. In a metal container, a body having opposed pairs of upstanding side and end Walls and a cover having opposed pairs of depending side and end flanges embracing the side and end Walls respectively in the closed position of the cover, there being a pair of opposed apertures in the side walls in alignment, a link partially embracing the side walls and embracing the rear end wall, the ends of said link extending into said apertures, a knuckle formed on the lower'endj of the rear end flange embracing the medial regions oi the link, locking lugs formed on the
