This invention relates to a support for a furniture and particularly to a support adapted to be placed under the leg o f an article of furniture. A great many articles of furniture are supported upon four legs, and it frequently happens that l due to unevenness in the supporting surface or to a variation in the length of said legs that all of the legs do not contact the oor or supporting surface. This causes the article of furniture to tip slightly when pressure comes upon the leg which is out of contact with the supporting surface.

It is an object of this invention to provide an adjustable device which may be used to support l5 one or more legs of an article of furniture such as a table, chair, bed,.etc. so that all of the legs will be in rm contact with the supporting means.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a very simple and efficient adjustable support for a a leg of an article of furniture, one that can be easily and inexpensively made and which can be easily positioned and quickly positioned for use. It is more specifically an object of the invention to provide an adjustable device for a leg of an article of furniture comprising a member adapted to rest upon the door and having an opening therein together with a second member constructed and arranged to be disposed at different heights in said opening and having a surface for supporting the leg of the article of furniture, said second member being provided with simple and efficient means for positioning it within said rst mentioned member.

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing inV which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:

Referring to the drawing a device is shown comprising a member I0 of general cylindrical form, the periphery of which in the embodiment 5 of the invention illustrated is shown as slightly curved in a vertical plane and decreasing in diameter toward the top of said member. Member III is provided with a central opening a and at its bottom is shown ashaving a counterbore Ib 10 of small depth. A plate I3 is pressed or other- Wise held in counterbore Ib, and with flange Ille surrounding said counterbore, will engage' the oor or other supporting surface. The member I0 is interiorly threaded as indicated at IDd. A 16 member I I is provided having a threaded periphery IIa of such diameter that member II can be screwed or threaded into the central opening in member III. Member II is made slightly of cup shape having a depressed top surface IIb winch 20 will form the supporting surface for the leg of an article of furniture, said leg being indicated in Fig. 2 as I2. Member II has formed thereon and circumferentially spaced about its thicker portion, a plurality of upstanding lugs IIc illustrated as three in number. Lugs IIc, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 to d,A taper toward their upper ends both in thickness and width.

In operation, member II will be threaded into member I0 and by grasping the portions IIc with n the fingers member II can be rotated in member II) to bring the same to the desired position or height therein. This position will be determined by the position of the bottom of leg I2 which it is desired to support. The leg I2 will then rest firmly on-the top surface I Ib and will extend between the members IIc. In the use of the device it may be only necessary to use the same under one leg of an article of furniture having four legs. Devices which are similar in appearance but not adjustable could be placed under three of the legs and the adjustable device described used only under the fourth leg. 'I'he article of furniture would then be rmly supported on all four legs. It will be seen that member II can be very easily and quickly moved to the desired position by engaging the lugs IIc.

In Figs. 5to 8, a modified form of the invention is shown comprising a member I 4. This member is in the form of a three-sided figure hav- 50 ing its sides at right angles. The outer surface of the three sides is formed on a curve extending inwardly toward the top of member I4. The inner surfaces of the three sides are substantially vertical and are provided with a plurality of inwardly extending ribs Ida of V-shape in cross section separated by similar V-shaped grooves. A second member I5 is provided of general square or rectangular shape and this member has on three sides thereof ribs l5a of V-shaped form separated by V-shaped grooves, which ribs and grooves correspond to the ribs and grooves in member I4. The structure is such that member I5 can be slidably moved into the open side of member M, the ribs I5a fitting into the grooves on the two sides of member III. When member I5 is fully inserted, the ribs Ia on its third side will engage the grooves on the closed end of member It so that member I5 will be supported on three sides. It will be noted that the ends Mb of the parallel sides of member It at its open side are formed on an angle of 45 degrees. Vertical grooves Hc are formed in said ends Hb and are transversely aligned respectively. A closing member I6 is provided, the same having sides adapted to t within the ends Mb and having projecting ribs I6a arranged to fit within the grooves Mc. Member I5 can thus be moved vertically into position and is of slightly less height than member I4. iront of member I5 and substantially engage with the front or smooth side of member I5. Member Ill is provided with a groove or recess Hd at its bottom which forms a comparatively narrow iiange He. A plate I1 is pressed in or otherwise held in groove or recess Md and with flange lie will engage the oor or supporting surface. Plate Il will also support member I6. Member I5 is provided with a depressed surface I5b which will form the support for the leg of the article of furniture.

With the described construction it will be seen that member I5 can be disposed at different heights or in different positions in member I4. It is only necessary to remove memberI I6 in order. that member I5 may be so positioned. Member I5` of course, will be positioned so that the desired rm support is secured for the leg of the article of furniture.

From the above description it will be seen Member I6 will slide down in that I have provided an extremely simple and efficient device adapted to support the leg of an article of furniture and furnish a firm support for such an article having four or more legs. The device forms a convenient and ornamental article. 'I'he same can be made from metal, glass or can be made of one of the modern plastic compositions. If desired, a soft covering (not shown) may be applied to the bottom of plates I3 and Il and the surrounding anges IOc and Ile. The device will be nicely colored and finished and can thus be made to harmonize with the nish of the furniture. It will be apparent that the device will have a high degree of utility for the purpose intended.

It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form; details, arrangement andproportions of the parts, Without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and dened in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

l. An adjustable support for a leg of an article of furniture having in combination, a member adapted to rest upon the floor and having a central opening therethrough, said opening being threaded, a second member of much less height than said member threaded in said opening and arranged to be disposed at different positions Within the same and having a top surface adapted to support said leg, a plurality of circumferentially spaced lugs extending upwardly from said second member adjacent the outer edge thereof between which said leg will be disposed, said lugs forming a handle means by which said second member may be engaged from above by the iingers of the operator to turn and adjust the same.
