Description

Application July 5, 1941, Serial No. 401,276
1 Claim.
This invention-relates to a load binder or takeup and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind to be interposed within a binding chain or kindred member to take up any slack or looseness to assure an effective application of such chain or kindred member.-
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind so constructed and assembled to permit taking up of slack at one or more points within the load binder.
The invention also has for its object to provide a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in the tying of logs and other kindred loads in connection with which difiiculty is often encountered in holding a load from slipping or shifting.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind comprising a series of link members wherein adjacent links are operatively connected by a lever member and wherein each of said lever members provides means for binding the load or taking up the looseness or slack which may be in the binding chain or member.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved load binder whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view, in side elevation, of a load binder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention, with the link members comprised therein being in fully separated relation;
Figure 2 is a View in top plan of the binder as herein disclosed with the links in their fully closed relation; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2 with a coupling hook applied thereto.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing the improved load binder comprises a plurality of links L, herein disclosed as three in number, and, as illustrated in Figure 2, each of these links L is substantially U-shape in form.
The side arms I of each of the links L is of with the upper face or surface of the intermediate cross member 3 of the link, while the lower portions of the side arms I extend a material distance below this member 3.
The intermediate or cross member 3 of each of the links L is formed at its longitudinal center I with an outwardly directed elongated arm 4 substantially coplanar with the intermediate or cross member 3. This arm 4, substantially midway its ends, is provided with an upstanding lug 5, the rear face 6 of which being disposed on a predetermined bevel or incline with respect to the longitudinal axis of the arm 4. In the present embodiment of our invention this face 6 is disposed on an angle of approximately forty-five degrees, although, of course, this may be varied as desired.
Interposed between each pair of adjacent links L and operatively engaged therewith is a lever member M. This member M comprises a U- shaped body 1 having its spaced side arms 8 extending between the free end portions of th side arms I of an adjacent link L and pivotally connected therewith by pins 9 or otherwise as may be preferred. It is pointed out, however, that the space between the arms 8 is free and unobstructed at the outer portion thereof. The arms 8 are disposed on a predetermined angle with respect to a relatively short lever handle [0 extending from the body member 1 in a direction opposite to that of the arms 8.
Extending .between the inner portions of the arms 8 of the member M is the outer end portion of the arm 4 of an adjacent link L or the arm ll of the coupling member C. This arm II is also provided with an upstanding lug l2 similar to a lug 5. The inserted end portion of the arm 4 or II is pivotally connected to the body portion 1 of the member M by a pin M, or otherwise as may be preferred.
The coupling member C has its outer end portion provided with an eye Hi to provide link connection therewith of a connecting hook IE or the like, while the link L remote from the coupling member 0 has extending from its intermediate,
or cross member I! an arm I3 provided with an eye I9 to which an end portion of a binding chain or the like is adapted to be connected.
When the lever members M are swung in a direction to take up slack or looseness, as illustrated in Figure 3, the body portion I or the adjacent end portions of the lever handles [0 will contact with the intermediate cross members 3 or I! of the link L with which the lever member is pivotally connected. With the lever members M in the positions illustrated in Figure 3 the binding chain or the like with which the device is employed will be tightly drawn around the load. It is to be explained that in some instances it may be only necessary to swing one of the members M into tightening position, other times only two, and, of course, under other conditions all three.
When the lever members M are in their binding positions, as illustrated in Figure 3, it is to be particularly pointed out that the side members I of the links L extend below the closed members M a distance sufficient to prevent the levers contacting with a log or other part of a load, and thus be kicked into open or release position.
When the lever members M are open, the extent of such opening movement is limited by contact with the lever arm I of each of the members M with the inclined face 6 of a lug 5, or with a correspondingly inclined face of the lug l2. It is also to be stated that when the improved load binder is in use the bottom edges 2 thereof contact with or rest upon the logs, lumber or the like comprised in the load. It is also to be pointed out that having the side arms I of the links L transversely enlarged, as herein disclosed, the strength of the binder as a whole is materially increased.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a load binder constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
We claim:
A load binder comprising a plurality of links, each substantially U-shape in form, a lever member U-shape in form and interposed between adjacent links, each of said members having the free extremities of its side arms pivotally connected to the outer extremities of the side arms of one link, an elongated arm extending from the central portion of the cross member of the second link and pivotally connected to the lever member between the inner portions of its side arms, a lever arm extending from the central part of the cross member of the lever member in angular relation thereto in a direction away from the end portion of the lever member pivotally engaged with one of the links, and a stop lug carried by the central portion of the arm of the link and having an inclined surface with which the arm of the lever member contacts to limit the outward movement of the lever member.
