3 Claims.
This invention relates in general to containers, and more particularly to shipping containers of the type in which the body of the container is made up of bre or other non-metallic material suitable for such use.
The present application is a division of my application for Containen led August 17, 1936, Serial No. 96,351, Patent No. 2,191,705, Feb. 27, 1940.
One of the principal objects of th'e invention is to provide a container of this character which is advantageously combined with metallic end heads, one of which is removable, whereby to adapt a brous bodyrcontainer to many uses and applications to which it would not otherwise be suitable.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the upper removable end head or cover that when the cover is secured in its 'applied or closed position it will not only be rmly h'eld e in place, but will effectively and hermetically seal the container and accomplish this in such manner that even though the container be dropped, and the interconnected portions of the cover and container distorted, the seal will not be impaired.
Another object is to provide a container and cover structure wherein the cover may be repeatedly applied to and removed from the container without impairing the integrity of the structure of either or reducing their capacity to establish an hermetic seal.
A furher object of the invention is to provide a container construction in which the' intercrimped or interlocking formations of the end heads and the container ends are practically protected, and wherein the protecting structure is utilized to facilitate rolling of the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction having these advantages and capacities and which is simple in its nature, durable in use, and easily and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Oth'er objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a container constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a View thereof in elevation?A Figure 3 is a view in vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, but showing the bendable closure lugs before they are bent into locking position;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing thelugs in locking position;
Figure 5 is a View in section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2, and illustrating one way in which the lower end head may be interconnected with the lower end of the container;
Figure 6 is a View similar to Figure 4 but showing a slight modi'ed structure; and
Figure 'l is a fragmentary View in elevation showing another embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, and more particularly to Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, it will be seen that in the embodiment of the invention there illustrated the container comprises a generally cylindrical body portion l which is constituted of fibrous material. The body may be of laminated fibrous construction, or may be constituted of other non-metallic material suitable for such use.
The lower end of the body portion I is surrounded by and interconnected with a closely fitting reinforcing metal sleeve 2, the lower end of which is rolled as at 3 into interlocking engagement with the lower end of the body portion l, the inturned edge 4 of the roll 3 being rmly forced or embedded into the fbrous body to secure a positive interlock and also a seal. The interconnection of the reinforcing metal sleeve 2 and the lower end of the body is enhanced and strengthened by forming an annular inwardly directedv corrugation 5 in the sleeve 2 which correspondingly corrugates the part of the body portion which is engaged therewith. o
A lower end head or bottom 6 is provided, and adjacent its periphery is provided with a curved seat 1, which is, of course, annular and engages a portion of the corrugation 5' in the body portion, whereby the seat 1 coacts with the corrugation 5 in interconnecting the metal parts and the fibrous body portion. Below th'e seat 1 the lower end head has an outwardly directed annular ridge 8, which extends into the annular crotch between the end 4 of the roll 3 and the adjacent part of the brous body portion. Beg yond the ridge 8 the lower end head is extended upwardly, as at 9, and then inwardly, as at Il), into iirm interlocking engagement with the lower part of the sleeve 2 and with the lower half of the corrugation 5 thereof.
The upper part of the body portion is also surrounded by a reinforcing and strengthening metal member designated generally at I2. This metal member I2 is also, generally speaking, in the form of a sleeve or collar, and has a portion I3 depressed inwardly to form the container with a reduced upper end or neck. Above the inwardly dished or depressed portion I3 the metal member I2 is folded outwardly and downwardly, providing an inclined flange portion I4, then extended vertically upwardly, as at I5, then inclined upwardly and inwardly providing a flange portion I6 parallel to flange portion I4, and terminates in a rounded or crown-shape portion I'I which is firmly engaged and slightly embedded in the fibrous body of the container. The sleeve structure I2 thus has interlocking formations which securely interconnect it with the upper end of the container.
A removable metallic cover or closure 20 is provided, and has a peripheral portion 2I designed to seat firmly against the inner surface of the upper end of the fibrous body and also overlap, to some extent, the crown portion I'I of the metal member I2. Integral with the peripheral portion of the cover is a downwardly and outwardly extending flange 22. Integral with and depending from the fiange 22 is a vertical annular flange 23. Bendable fastening lugs 24 are integral with and depend from the lower edge of the flange 23 and terminate at their lower ends in hooks 25. Any suitable number of these fastening lugs are provided, and they are spaced at intervals about the periphery of the flange 23, as will be understood from Figures 1 and 2.
The flange portion I6 of the metal member I2 provides a seat for a gasket 26, which, in the applied position of the cover, is compressed between this seat and the ange 22 of the cover to effect complete sealing of the container. When the cover is applied to the container the lugs 24 are straight as shown in Figure 3. To firmly secure the cover in position, and hermetically seal the container, the lugs are bent up under the shoulder provided by the flange portion I4 of the sleeve-like metal member I2. This not only secures the cover in position but compresses the gasket 26 between the flange 22 and the seat I6 so as to hermetically seal the container. The hooks 25 provide a convenient means whereby the hooks 24 can be straightened out in order that the cover may be removed.
It will be seen that as thus constructed the opening at the upper end of the container is provided with outwardly and downwardly eX- tending flanges I6 and I4 which respectively provide a gasket seat and a locking shoulder. Cooperable with this structure is the downwardly and outwardly inclined flange 22 of the closure and the bendable lugs 24 thereof. These several parts are constituted of metal suiciently resilient and bendable to preclude their fracture. Moreover, it should be noted that the lugs 24 are bent flush up into the angle between the locking shoulder I4 and the portion I3 of the reinforcing sleeve I2. As a result of these several features, the closure is not only securely held to the container, but the gasket 26 is compressed to provide a seal, and this is done in such a way that even though the parts, when assembled, be distorted under the influence of shocks or blows, the effectiveness of the seal will not be impaired. In fact, it will be enhanced.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 6 is identical with that just described except that the crown portion I'I of the metal member I2 is omitted. In this construction the seat for the gasket 26 is constituted in part by the portion I6 of the metal member and in part by the portion IB of the container. Thus, the gasket seals the juncture of the upper edge of the metal member I2 and the fibrous material.
The present invention also contemplates the provision of outwardly directed annular corrugations 21 in the reinforcing metal members or sleeves I2 and 2 at the upper and lower ends respectively of the container. Such oorrugations strengthen the construction, and also provide a convenient means whereby the container may be rolled without danger of injury to its ends, or to the means which connects the cover to the container.
While I have shown and described several constructions in which the invention may be advantageously embodied, it is to be understood that these constructions have been selected merely for the purpose of illustration or example, and thatl various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim! 1. A container comprising a body portion of fibrous material, a reinforcing metal sleeve structure surrounding the lower end of said body and terminating in an inturned roll embedded in the lower end portion of the fibrous body, a lower metallic end head interlocked with said sleeve structure, overlying a portion of the outside surface thereof, and coacting therewith to confine the lower end of the fibrous body therebetween, and a removable closurefor the upper end of the container.
2. A container comprising a body portion of fibrous material, a reinforcing metal sleeve structure surrounding the lower end of said body and terminating in an inturned roll embedded in the lower end portion of the fibrous body, a lower metallic end head interlocked with said sleeve structure, overlying a portion of the outside surface thereof, and coacting therewith to conne the lower end of the fibrous body therebetween, said end head having an outwardly directed ridge fitted snugly in the angle between the inner portion of the roll and the adjacent portion of the fibrous body, and a removable closure for the upper end of the container.
3. A container comprising a body portion of fibrous material, a reinforcing metallic sleeve structure surrounding the lower end of said body and terminating in an inwardly directed roll em bedded in the inner portion of the lower end of the body, the intermediate portion of the sleeve and the adjacent portion of the fibrous body having interfitting corrugations, a lower metallic end head having a portion engaged with said roll and a portion overlying the outside surface of and interlocked with said corrugation of the sleeve structure, and a closure for the upper end of the body.
