This invention relates in general to furniture or the like constructions and more particularly to constructions wherein a flat, edged element is covered with a flexible covering sheet of any desired material but preferably linoleum, and wherein the covering sheet is rolled down over or curved about the edge and fastened by concealed means to present a smooth top covering of pleasing and attractive appearance.

The principal object of theinvention is to provide a table top, shelf, bar, counter, or other similar article of manufacture having a generally flat surface and an edge or rim, in combination with a flexible covering sheet of linoleum, rubberized fabric, or the like, for said table top, counter, etc., the edge thereof having a rounded surface over which the linoleum is laid and follows its lines to present a rounded smooth edge.

Other objects include the provision of a table top as above wherein the edges thereof are rounded in the form of a bead having a .diameter in excess of the thickness of the table top, so that the table will appear to be heavy and thick, there being a flexible covering sheet for the top and bead, which lays flatly and smoothly thereon, the extreme edge of the sheet being out of sight and concealed behind the bead and secured there by a cleat of triangular shape to conform generally to the bottom surface of the table top and to the rear or inward side of the bead.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive and relatively easily manufacturable table top or the like, having a smooth flexible covering lending a pleasing appearance to the article, and wherein the table top edges are rounded to form a bead which depends in part below the bottom surface of the table top to thereby conceal the cut edge of the covering and fastening devices securing it to the table top.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a table embodying the present invention; and

Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. l, a table leg being omitted for clarity of illustration.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the reference numeral l indicates generally a table having a top element embodying the present invention, although it is to be noted that this invention may be utilized in various articles of manufacture, as for example, bars, counters, shelves, etc., or in fact in any relation Where desired. It is preferred, however, to illustrate this application in a table.

Reference numeral 2 indicates the table top itself, which is supported in the present instance by means of ornamental end legs 3 secured to the top at its under surface and connected by a rail 4. The legs may be of any conventional design desired and they may take the form of folding supports as in a card table. The present table top comprises a relatively heavy wooden element 5, which of course may be of other materials if desired, and is provided with an integral bead 5 all around its edges, this bead bounding the element 5.

Bead 6 is rounded and as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, it has a diameter substantially in excess of the thickness or vertical dimension of the table top. The head is tangent to the element 5 at the top surface of the latter as indicated at 1, and extends outwardly and downwardly thereof on the arc of a circle until it extends in effect reversely inwards under element 5 to thereby form a depending portion 8.

A flexible sheet 9 of linoleum or rubberized material or the like is used as a covering for the table top and completely covers the same, being rolled down over the bead 6, surrounding the latter at all sides of the table. Corners H) are split and concealed by ornamental plastic or other pieces H, it being considered unnecessary to specifically illustrate this construction. The cut edge of covering sheet 9 extends just about up to the under side of element 5 at the angled junction formed by the inward or rear side of the bead and the adjacent portion of the under or bottom surface of the table top element. A generally triangular cleat l2 runs along the inward side of the bead, and this cleat has side angles as shown to fit the junction above mentioned. The edge of the covering is included between the cleat and the inward side of the bead and the cleat is utilized to jam the covering edge up to the bead. Any desired fastening means may be used to secure the cleat and cover sheet edge in position, nails I3 being here illustrated. It is to be noted that the fastener passes through the cleat cover sheet, and into the bead, tightly clamping the cover sheet in the correct position. Additional fasteners may be used to secure the cleat to the bottom surface of the table top element 5 if desired.

The above described construction will be seen to provide a table top or other analogous article having a smooth attractive appearance and in which the top appears to possess a thickness and strength of high degree due to the bead 6. At the same time the bead has the further function of providing concealment and an efficient holding means for the linoleum covering because it is enlarged and depends below the bottom surface of the table top thus forming a kind of hidden pocket or recess. Also, the construction of the present invention provides an inexpensive and simple article which still has all the appearance of a much heavier and more costly device.

Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:

1. An article of the class described comprising a flat element having spaced plane top and bottom surfaces, said top surface extending outwardly beyond said bottom surface at the edges of said element, a round enlarged bead extending along said edges and being tangent to said outwardly extending top surface and having its periphery adjacent said bottom surface located generally along an angle thereto to form an angular junction therewith, said bead having an axis of revolution located below and in substantial vertical aligmnent with the edge of said top surface and horizontally outwardly beyond the outermost extent of said bottom surface, a covering of pliant material on said top surface and surrounding said bead, and means fastening an edge of said covering to said bead adjacent said junction, the curve of said head extending downwardly below the bottom surface of the article and thence upwardly to meet said bottom surface, whereby the edge of the covering is completely hidden by the bead from observation from in front of the head.

2. An article as recited in claim 1 wherein said element is in the form of a table top having opposite edges formed by parallel beads, said covering being stretched down over and completely around said beads.

3. An article as recited in claim 1 wherein said element is in the form of a rectangular table top having parallel beads at its opposite edges, and corner plates secured over the covering at the angles formed at the ends of adjacent beads.
