This invention relates to an anchored drum plug xture which is to be retained and carried by the drum or container whether or not the plug `is removed from the bung opening of the drum,

this being the primary purpose of the invention.

It is also an object of the invention to provide the drum plug with securing means for preventing it being misplaced from the drum after its removal.

A further object is to provide the drum plug with flexible means for securing it against being wholly disconnected from the drum and so that it is readily accessible for use.

A still further object is to provide the drum plug with eXible retaining means which is secured to the plug in a manner to permit rotation of the plug during fitting or removing the plug from the drum.

Still another object is to provide the retaining means for the plug with a slip-ring.

Another still further object is to provide the drum plug with a concentrically disposed projecting portion to which the flexible retaining means is turnably secured.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a top elevation of a drum head having a portion broken away and showing the invention applied thereto.

Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse sectional elevation taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the drum plug shown in Fig. 1, having portions of the slip-ring thereon shown in section.

Figure 4 is an enlarged plan elevation partly in section of the slip-ring used on the plug.

In the use of drum plugs of this character which are generally used in pairs in a head or wall of the drum. one of the plugs which is larger than the other plug, serves to close the bung lling opening of the drum and the smaller plug is generally used in tting the dispensing bung opening. In practice, it has been found that quite often either one or both of the drum plugs after their removal, have become inadvertently misplaced and lost and are therefore not available when required, for closing the bung openings. The invention therefore is applicable to drum plugs to prevent misplacing thereof.

Referring to the several figures of the drawing, a wall of the drum specifically shown at 5 as the drum head, is provided with the usual lling and dispensing bung openings, only one of the bung openings being shown in Fig. 2 and which bung opening is provided by the threaded bushing 6 which may be secured to the wall 5 by welding, and mounted in respective bung openings is the iilling drum plug 8 and the dispensing drum plug 9.

Each of the drum plugs 8 and 9 is provided with a flange I9 having a plurality of straight sides II and opposing lugs I2 for wrench engagement and a threaded portion I3a for closing engagement with the interior threads of respective bushings 6.

Projecting outwardly from the flange I 0 of each drum plug is a concentrically disposed boss I3 each having an annular` bead I4, and mounted on each bead is a split slip-ring I5 having a pair of opposing ears I6 between which an end link I'I of respective chains I8 is secured by a rivet I9, the other end link 20 of respective chains being secured in respective openings 2| of the bearing brackets 22 which are secured to the wall 5 for swingingly supporting the ends of a lifting bail 1.

The slip-rings I5 are secured to respective beads I4 with sucient play or looseness to permit slipping of the rings when the drum plugs 8 or 9 are manipulated for either removing 0r securing them in respective bung bushings 6 and of course in so doing, the wrenching tool will have to be engaged and dis-engaged from the drum plugs so that the chains I8 will not be fouled.

Ultimately when the drum plugs are removed from their respective bushings they will be held connected to the wall 5 by their respective chains so that when it is desired to close the bung openings, the drum plugs are readily available for this purpose and consequently cannot be misplaced or lost.

So that the slip-ring will not become too tightly engaged on the bead I4 of respective plugs 8 and 9, the rivet I9 may be provided with a shoulder 23 to engage against the opposing ear of each slip-ring, the shoulder however being of a length to maintain the necessary clamping efiiciency of the slip-rings for a required turnable fitting and so that the slip-rings will not be dis-engaged from respective beads.

Having thus described the invention so that those skilled in the art will be able to practice the same, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is defined in what is claimed, it being understood that various changes in the xture shown and described in detail and not amounting to invention, may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

-What I claim is:

1. A closure plug for a metallic drum having a ange and a projecting portion of less diameter than the ange extending axially from the plug, a surrounding bead on the projecting portion, a split slip-ring having a pair of ears and freely mounted on said bead, and a rivet mounted through said ears and having a shoulder abutting one of the ears to secure the slip-ring on the bead against seizing engagement.

2. A closure plug for a metallic container, said plug having a, concentrically disposed portion projecting from the outer end thereof, a bead formed on the extending end of said projecting portion, a split slip-ring clamped on said bead, and a shouldered element on the ring for freely securing the ring on the bead against seizing engagement.

3. A closure plug for a metallic container, said plug having a. concentrically disposed portion projecting from the outer end thereof, a bead formed on the extending end of said projecting portion, a split slip-ring clamped on said bead, a shouldered element on the ring for freely securing the ring on the bead against seizing engagement, and securing means connecting said element and the container.
