WMATTORNEYE Patented May 12, 1942 APPARATUS FOR FORNIING WATER HEATING COILS Winford L. Enghauser, Cincinnati, Ohio, assignor to The Production Plating Works, Inc., Lebanon, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio' Application December 5, 1938, Serial No. 243,908
Claims.
This invention relates to the art of bend-.
ing or forming lengths of tubing and is particularly directed to apparatus for bending a length of pipe into the form suitable for a water coil, specifically providing a reversely bent length of tubing having parallel runs and adjacent terminal ends. It is desirable to extend the amount of passageway so that the water has a greater travel in the zone of heat. For this reason, the tube is bent so as to provide an enlarged or flared bight.
The formation of a coil of this shape presents unusual problems in the art of bending. One of the first considerations is reduction in the number of steps required in the formation. The coil must sell inexpensively and it is therefore desirable that the number of steps be reduced to a minimum to save costs of production. Also the tubing must be supported efficiently during the bending so as to prevent wall collapse.
It has been the object of the present inventor to provide an apparatus for bending a length of tubing into a complete coil in a single operation or pass. tive, may consist of a throated die, including a A structure, resulting from this objecrocking die actuated by the motion of a descending forming die as it passes into the throat of the lower die for bending the pipe around the forming element of the descending die to form the enlarged bight and for disposing the runs in close proximity.
It has been a further object of the inventor to facilitate the removal of the finished coil from the apparatus. Toward this end,'the equipment includes a release mechanism whereby the forming parts may be moved a predetermined amount to permit the withdrawal of the finished coil.
It has also been an object of the inventor to provide an apparatus of this characterwhich is rugged and accurate in the production of the article, which adequately supports the tubing,
and wherein the forming parts may be interchanged to produce coils formed of pipe'of different diameters.
The method described herein forms the subject matter of a divisional application, Serial No.
304,984, filed November 17, 1939.
Other objects and certain advantages will be more fully apparent in -a description of the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is the front view of the coil forming apparatus of this invention. v Figure 2 is a fragmentary view taken similar to Figure l but showing the apparatus in position after forming the length of tubing into a coil.
Figure 3 is a side view of the apparatus. Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 44, Figure 1, illustrating the details of the top die.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a portion of Figure 3, further detailing the die.
' Figure dis a view taken similar to Figure 5,
but showing the release mechanism thereof operated for removing the finished coil.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on line 1l Figure 5, further detailing the release mechanism.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on line 88, Figure 1, detailing a portion of the lower die.
Generally described, the apparatus consists cl a stationary die having a rocking die pivoted thereon, and an upper die adapted to descend upon the pipe for forcing the pipe between the of which rests on the top surface ofthe die sup- I port. This die element is removable'for interchangement. A separate die element for each size of tubing is employed. A semi-circular groove l4, formed on the radius of the particular tubing, extends along the top arm and the side arm of the die and feathersout atthe base of the vertical arm. I
A bracket 15, for supporting the length of the pipe, is fixed against the side of the support and provides a horizontal arm, the top surface of which lies in the plane of the-base of the semicircular groove M. .This'arm has a stop It adjustably fixed thereon by means of a set screw The length of tubing, indicated at I8, has one end engaged against this stop Hi.
The rocking die I9 is constituted by a bell crank, which is pivoted on a pivot pin 20. One arm of the bell crank extends upwardly and carries a forming wheel 2l,.which includes a semicircular groove 22, formed on the radius of the particular tubing, wherein the wheel is in the form of a sheave. When this wheel is in upward position, the straight length of pipe will rest tangentially in the groove since the base of the groove is in the same plane as the base of the groove of the stationary die.
The horizontal arm'of the bell crank carries an actuating wheel 23. This wheel is grooved in the same manner as the wheel2 i. posed directly in the path'of the descending die or, more specifically, the pipe pressed downwardly under the die. The bell crank is held in the position as described above by means of a coil spring 24 under tension between a pin 25 on the Vertical arm and a pin 26 fixed on a stop element .21 attached to the side-of the support ll. The bell crank carries a stop 28 engaged with stop 21 The wheel is dis- .to its axis. and 2 the :wheel *sections: are z=loosely mountedron thereof.
scent ofthe upper die.
The details of the die actuating mechanism are not shown since they are conventional. The
lower end of the ram 29 includes an attachment when the rocking die is in position prior to dedie. adapted to engage the tubinasaidbell crank having one of its anns extended laterally into the throat and engageable by the descending tubing for causing the first named forming wheel to bend the tubing around the descending form- "ingwheel'and'to' move one run of tubing close is of the same type as the wheel 2| but.is, .split centrally of its thickness, thatis, at right angles Theastudeiszifixedrrigidly imposition the stud.
The outer asection s36 .oftrthe .wvheel istshiftable -along the studzbyrmeanspf-xa". lever*'3l. The "handle 38 of the lever is screwed into one arm:of*a bell crank 39, :"which is lzbifurcated land :pivoted on.the 'outer end of theistudz35 om arpin 40. in this instanceybeing indicated at 44.
Thus, when-therpivotw and the screws 43 and are alignedxalong the-axis of the stud,

per forming wheel. This-roller rides'along theadapted to'be engaged by the run of tubing when s'the ram reaches'thelower end of its-stroke for 'maintaining' thefformed'run in strictly vertical position (see 1Figure..2)
When the forming wheelis in'the position shown in Figure 6,"the;finished'coil may be slid downwardly, assuminggof course, that the ram has been raised. The runs '51 of the coil are spaced sufiiciently to permit traversal with respect to the stud '35.
