Description

y 5, 1942- N. A. GLASKOWSKY 2,281,760
DEODORIZING DEVICE Filed Oct. 16, 1940 W i.- a a Patented May 5, 1942 DEODORIZING DEVICE Nicholas A. Glaskowsky, Westfield, Mass., assignor to StanleyHome Products, Inc., Westfield, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application October 16, 1940, Serial No. 361,425
1' Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in deodorizing devices and it is directed more particularly to a novel deodorizing device consisting primarily of a body or cake of a deodorizing material, such as paradichloro-benzene crystals or the like, so arranged that the desired gas or gases may be expelled through evaporation or the like so as to accomplish the desired results, and having a means for attaching the same to a support.
As will appear in this specification, the construction is such that the device may be suspended from a nail or the like on a wall of a closet and as a special feature of my invention, the suspension or hanging means is novelly associated with the deodorizing body so as to be integral therewith and, consequently, to be capable of being packaged therewith.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a deodorizing device which is compact in its form so as to be easy and economical to package, ship, and store and which, at the same time, has all of the advantages of the more bulky and less economical odorizers heretofore known in the trade.
My invention further provides for a unique hanger which may be easily incorporated with the working body.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description thereof proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is an end elevational view of a modified form of my deodorizing device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the form shown in Fig. 1, with dot-dash lines to explain certain features of my invention;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the packaged device of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with parts thereof in section and dot-dash lines for purposes of explanation;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the suspension means of the device of my invention in extended relation for purposes of clarity.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, wherein similar reference figures refer to like parts, and referring more particularly to the preferred form of my invention which has been selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a body, or what I sometimes call a cake, of a deodorizing material which is represented by the characteristic 50.
This member 50 may take any desired shape or size and in the form shown in the accompanying drawing, it is rectangular. It may be formed of various fume-emitting materials, such as paradichloro-benzene crystals which may be pressed into a, cake. It is to be remembered, however, that the chemical characteristics of the body do not form a part of my invention and that the novel features which I claim are directed merely to the physical construction of the device.
It is common, when forming cakes, to press or to compress the chemical materials in a mould of the desired form. According to my invention, some of the material is placed in a mould and I place therein the retaining part of a hanger device, which is indicated generally by the character as shown in Fig. 4.
In the drawing I have shown the cake 50 as having a covering or wrapping member 52 associated therewith. This member 52 may consist of a sheet of paper such as Cellophane, with the marginal edge portions of the wrapper being brought into adjacency at one side or end of the cake.
A hanging device, indicated generally by the numeral 60 is shown in Fig. 4 and it is preferably formed from a strip of bendable metal. This has what I call a connecting part 62, an apertured attaching part 64 and a retaining part 66.
The retaining part 66 is relatively reduced in width with respect to the part 62 and is adapted to be inserted into one side of the cake and extend entirely therethrough with a portion projecting outwardly beyond the opposite side of the cake. The projecting portion is then bent upwardly to lie adjacent said opposite side of the cake and then inwardly to overlie its top as shown in Fig. 1.
The attaching portion 64 is provided with an aperture 10 for facilitating hanging of the device on a wall as upon a nail. It also has an aperture 68 for receiving the outer free end of the part 66 when the part 64 is bent over the top of the cake, as shown.
According to the preferred method of formation of the device of the invention, there is provided a cake or block of the deodorizing material and the cover member or sleeve-like member is provided thereover. The cake or block is usually formed in a suitable mold and the sleeve member may be placed in the mold before the deodorizing material is poured therein if it is so desired.
Manifestly the specific details of construction may be considerably varied from those herein shown and described without involving any departure from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages inherent there- 'in. While I have described my invention in this specification in great detail and particularly with respect to the present preferred form thereof, it is not desired to be limited thereto since many changes and modifications may be made therein Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention may be embodied in otherspe'cific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as beingrestrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A deodorizing device of the class described comprising in combination, a body of deodorizing material, and a hanger device consisting of a strip of bendable metal having an intermediate part extending entirely through the body and out opposite sides thereof and opposite end portions extending upwardly adjacent the outside of said opposite sides of the body, one of said opposite end portions being in the form of a tongue and the other being provided with a slot, said tongue being engaged in said slot adjacent the outside of the upper side of the body.
