PAPER-FILE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,158, dated May 25, 1880.

Application filed April 7, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. Woons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The drawing is a perspective view showing a device embodying the present invention.

This invention relates to that class of paperfiles in which the receptacle for the papers slides into or is contained in an envelope or case, and which are in general shown in the patents granted to me, No. 36,200, August 12, 1862, No. 38,868, June 9,1863, No. 46,415, February 14, 1865, and No. 108,746, October 25,

1870; and the novelty consists in a compact,

folding box composed of an outer case and a receptacle to slide therein, so arranged as to contain business-papers, which may be examined by their titles without removing them from the box and without separating the ireceptacle from the case, and with the least loss of time.

My invention can be made of any kind of material or combination of materials suitable- (No model.)

The part Bis also made of any desired size, shape, or form. lts upper or top end, I), may be stiffened by any material and in any desired way, but preferably by a strip of wood or cork, to give it suitable strength, but at the same time insure all necessary lightness. In the back of the receptacle and near its upper end, as at c, is an opening, through which the user is enabled to apply his finger to thrust upward the papers contained in receptacle B.

To use my invention I take the box in the left hand, and with the right hand pull out the drawer or inner case far enough to expose the papers, when the forefinger of the left hand is pressed against the papers through the slot, which enables the operator to examine their titles and select with facility the paper desired.

It will be seen that only two motions are required to operate the file-one to throw it open and one to select the paper.

Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is'- In a paperfile, the combination of an outer case or envelope with an inner file-holder or receptacle for papers, having a stiffened outer end and a longitudinal linger-slot in its back near the upper end, whereby the papers may be readily examined without removing said holder or receptacle'from its containingcase or envelope, substantially as described;
