Description
' April 21', 1942. EY 2,280,231 PORTABLE BACK REST I Filed Aug. 19, 1940 ATTO R N EYS Patented 21, 1942' 1 UNITED STATES PAT ENT GFFICE PORTABLE BACK REST Charles 0. Gulley. Lexington, iiy. Application August 19,19, Serial No. 353,289
lClaim. (CL155- -133) This invention relates to a portable back rest and has for an object to provide a portable back rest which can easily. be slipped over the front portion of anyflat bench. v
Another object is tor-provide a portable back rest which is light in weight and easily carried,
especially when it is provided with a hinge.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the device applied to the seat of a bench shown in cross section.
Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation of the device applied to the seat of a bench.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the device showing the hinge construction. 7 a
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a modification of the device attached'to the seat of a bench.
Referring now to the drawing in whichlike characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, the portable back rest includes a substantially T-shaped upright member l and a horizontal member 1 I, both preferably formed of sheet metal. The lower end of the upright member I0 is provided with downwardly clip contacts with the front edge of the seat I! I of the bench and the inclined part 2| of the clip contacts with the underside of the seat; The clip, when applied to the seat of the bench becomes tensioned. Due thereto, and to the weight of the person on the horizontal member 10, the back rest is held against accidental displacement.
In the modified form of the device, shown in Figure 4, the portable back rest includes a substantially T-shaped upright sheet metal member 23 and a horizontal member 24, formed integral therewith. .The horizontal member is adapted to rest upon the seat of a bench 25 and the upright member -23 inclines upwardly and rearwardly from the rear end 26 of the horizontal member. The horizontal member 24 is provided at its front end with an integral clip comprising a downwardly extending part 21 and an upwardly and rearwardly inclined part 28. The downwardly extending part contacts with the front edge of the seat ofnthn'icb ch and the inclined part of the clip 28 contacts withthe undersidebf the seat. The clip, when applied to the seat,.is
tensloned. Due thereto, and to the weight of the person on the horizontal member 24, the back rest is held against accidental displacement.
In operation, the portable backrest is secured to the seat of the bench forcing the clip 'to 'engage thefront edge portion of the bench seat.
When iLisldeslred to detach the back rest,;the clip is pulled forward until released.
From the above description it is thought that mg, a substantially T-shaped upright member, 8.
extending straight portions which are bent'upe wardly and inwardly to form hinge ears I 2. The rear end of the horizontal member is provided with three straight portions, the two outside portions being bent upwardly to form steps 13 and ll adapted to .engage the rear side of the upright member, while the center portion is bent upwardly and forwardly to' form a hinge ear II. A pin [8 is inserted throughthe hinge ears l2 and I 5' t0 hingedly secure the upright member upright member In bears against the stop members II and Hand inclines upwardly and rearhorizontalmember, the lower'end of the upright member being provided with straight portions bent upwardly and inwardly to. form--part of hinge ears, the rear part of the horizontal mem- .ing bent upwardly and forwardly to form a hinge car, a pin engaged through all of said hinge ears, the horizontal member being provided at its front part with a resilient integral clip, said'clip ineluding a downwardly extending part and an upwardly from the horizontal member.- The horizontal member is provided at its front end with 'a clip comprising a downwardly'extending part 2| and an upwardly and rearwardly inclined part wardly and rearwardly inclined part, said downwardly extendingpart of the clip being adapted to contact with the front edge of the seat of a bench, said inclined part being adapted to contact with theunderside of said seat, the clip when applied to the seat becoming tensioned.
