Description
April 21,1942. M. s. MIRSKI 1 I COMBINATION BOOT JACK DEVICE Filed NOV. 1, 1940 INVENTIOR Aim/m4 6. MRS/(l 25 ATTORNEY those of men, and for I dependent Patented Apr. 21 1942 "OFFICE v 2,230,251 COMBINATION BOOTJACK navroi: lVIichael s. Mirski, New York, N. Y. Application November ;1, 1240, Serial No. 363,859 I This invention relates to boot-jacks in general. Among the objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide an improved combination portable boot jack and boot positioning device which is adapted for use with various sizes of rid ing boots and thelike, both those'of women and boots with various sizes of heels including the high heels of womens boots, and the lower heels of mens boots.
Theseand other features, capabilities and ads vantages of the invention will appear from the sub-joined detaildescription of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of boot removingposition;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the embodimentillustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. .3 is a fragmental section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective similar to Fig. 1 withone of the hook members in closed collapsible position and the other in boot putting-on position;
Fig. 5 is a perspective showing both hook members in closed collapsibleposition on the main bracket; l
the boot jack in Fig. 6 is an enlarged end elevation on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5; e l
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of one of the hook members in use; and
Fig. 8 is an enlarged perspective of one of the hook members. I
The combination consists. essentially of three separate independent members including a main bracket l and two like hooks members 2 and 3 which may be interlocked or nested in one position to form a compactypackage, see Fig. 5, suitable for storing awayeither in a bureau draweror the like, or even in a clothingpocket or a ladys bag; which may be interlocked or nested in another position. to form a boot jack, and which boot members 2 and 3 as separate inelements removed from the main bracket I, may be used for engaging theloops of riding boots or the like for drawing on the boots, see Fig. 7. l l
The mainbracket comprises a somewhat U-shaped portion 4 having a substantially plane or slightly convex upper surface 5, two jaw members 6 and 1, a rear enlargement 8 with a substantially quadrangular opening 9, lateral recesses I and II, and atransverse or downwardly extending enlargement having a substantially quadrangular opening I 3. i
The inner faces of the jaw elements 6 and 1 8 Claims. (or 223-415) flare outwardly, and preferably. as shown, have graduations therein, theinner U-shaped face It simulating the heel portions or rear portions of smaller sizes of riding boots such as womens riding boots, and thecomplemental outer curved faces l5 and I6 complementing one another to simulate the heel portions or rear portions of larger sizes of riding boots, such as mens riding boots. The outwardly flaring walls of the face l4. serve toxaccommodate various different sizes of womens boots, and the outwardly flaring walls of the faces l5- and I6 similarly serve to accommodate various different sizes of mens boots.
The overall altitude from the upper faces 14 to the lowerend of the enlargement l2 preferably is at least two inches to exceed the altitude of the highest heel of a womans ridingboot. The lower face I! of the enlargement l2 furthermore isrounded, asparticularly shown in Fig. 3, not only for the comfort of the user, in the case of a woman should she wish to place the set in her bag or the like, or in the case of a man shouldhewish to place the set in his coat pocket or the like, but also. toform a rocking surface for rocking the bracket I while in boot removing use as shown in Fig. 1.
The hook members 2 identical and therefore but one of them. Each prises an anchoring and 3 are substantially it will suflice to describe hook member 2, '3 comextension is, a shank I9, and a hook arm 23;. Theouter edge 2| of the shank i9 conforms to the outer edge 22, 22-of the bracket I in the interest of forming a compact package, as hereinafter set forth. The extension I8 in length corresponds substantially to the distance between the rear ends of the outer edges 22 adjacent the recesses It and H, andin addition, their lateral faces 23 taper toward one another as they approach the end 24 of the extension 18, When the faces 23 are so tapered, the insertion of the extensions it into the openings 9 or it is facilitated, since they. thereby edges of the hook arms 28 in alinement with the outer ends of the jaws 6 and I, of compactness. r
The lateral faces 24 of the hook arms 2llxsimiall in ,the. interest l-arly taper inwardly toward one another as they approach their outer ends so that they will nest relative to one another, as shown in Fig. 6.
Besides tapering the lateral faces 24 toward one another as they approach the outer end 25, the outer faces of the disk-shaped member 26 taper toward one another as they approach the periphery. This compound tapered arrangement serves also to facilitate introducing the hook arm 20 into the .boot when on the leg of the wearer. If, as an instance, i3, .particular boot had a close fit with the leg of the wearer, especially after a ride, the calf of the wearer might have swelled sufficiently to make it painful to insert any cumbersome metal instrument between the boot wall and the leg of the wearer. Practice hasfound that when the hook arms 20 have this compound taper, such objection is overcome. In the interest of positively anchoring the boot strap 21 to the hook arm 2E8, the arm 20 preferably has av recess 28 between the disk portion 26 and the shank portion of the arm 29, as particularly shown in Fig. 8. In boot removing position, the extensions l8 are inserted through the opposite ends of the opening 9 into the position shown in Fig. 1, where the angular formation of the opening 9 will snugly anchor the extensions l8 against movement relative to one another, especially when the hook arms 20 engage one another, as shown in Fig. 1. The user, in the act of removing the boot, is onlyv required to press the toe portion of one boot or foot on the platform formed by the two hook members 2 and 3,
with the curved portion I'I engaging the" supporting floor and thereupon insert the heel or rear portion of the other boot above the heel between the jaw member 6 and I as shown in Fig. 1, the wearer of the smaller boot engaging portions of the flaring walls of the face 14, and the wearer of the larger boot engaging portions of the flaring walls of the faces 15 and I6. Thereupon, the user would exercise a downward pressure on the hook aims 2 and 3, and an upward drawing action by the leg in the boot engaging the jaw members 6 and 1 with the result that the boot will quickly be withdrawn from the leg of the wearer.
In turn, when drawing on a boot, it is only necessary to remove the hook members 2 and 3 from the bracket I, insert one hook member on either side of the boot to be put on in the usual straps 21 in such boot, and draw upwardly on the hook members 2 and 3 and press downwardly with the leg being inserted in such boot.
Still furthermore, when the set is to be stored away, the three elements can quickly be nested into one another by inserting the extensions l8 into the opposite ends of the opening i3 with the hook arms 20 disposed under the outer ends of the jaw members 6 and I, as shown in Fig. 5.- Preferably, as shown, the lateral faces of the enlargements 8 and [2 are in alinement in the interest of the appearance of the set, and also to cooperate with the dimensions of the hook members 2 and 3 so that they will form the compact package shown in Fig. 5.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
