Description
' J. A. PAUL.
Fruit-J ar Top.
No. 226,779. Patented April 20, 1-880.
mrumiavs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. PAUL, OF HUNTINGDON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO J. HALL MUSSER, OF SAME PLACE.
FRUIT-JAR TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,779, dated April 2Q, 1880.
Application filed February 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. PAUL, of Huntingdon, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation, partly in section, of my fruit-jar top.
My invention relates to tops for fruit-jars; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Let A designate the glass fruit-jar, which is formed with an annular recess, B, at its rim. (J represents a. yoke, which is hinged to the neck of the jar by means of a wire, D, which is passed around the jar and bent to form lugs D. These lugs pass through holes in the ends of the yoke, and are bent down so as to maintain the yoke in place.
E is the jar-cover, which cover is formed with an annular flange, F, adapted to fit into the annular recess B, at the bottom of which is an elastic packing-ring, H.
Aifollower, I, is secured by means of a swivel-joint. 70, to the lower end of a screwthreaded rod, K, which worksthrough the yoke O. The upper end of this rod passes 5 through an opening, 0, in the yoke O, and is squared, so as to be effectively grasped by a wrench which will be used to screw down the rod, and thus bring the follower into contact with the cover. 0
After fitting the cover in place the rod will be screwed down so as to tighten up the follower against the cover, thus sealing the jar without the use of wax.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let- 4,5
JOHN A. PAUL.
