Description

Patented Dec. 16, 1941 greens 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in oil burners, more particularly being concerned with means for governing the passage of air through the burner housing while the burner is idle. The virtue of a contrivance for this purpose lies in its usefulness in preventing the premature chilling of the furnace during the idle periods of the oil burner. With this premise in mind the outstanding object of the invention is as follows:
To provide an arcuate member of a flexible nature, and adapted to be flexed in such a way as to close the air entrances to the burner housing when the burner is idle, the means for flexing said member comprising a solenoid with an appropriate linkage interconnecting the member and the solenoid core.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an oil burner housing illustrating the application of the improved air entrance control, the cap for the central opening being omitted.
Figure 2 is a cross section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
This is a division of an application for patent for oil burner accessoryfiled by John Gofi'redo July 7, 1939, Ser. No. 283,265. In carrying out the invention provision is made of an oil burner I which includes the blower housing 3. The blower mechanism is not shown, and in practice parts of this mechanism will occupy the central opening 4 of the housing. This opening includes a forwardly extending flange 5 which, for the purposes of the invention, is desirably capped at 6.
The front wall 1 of the housing 3 is provided with one or more air entrances 8, and it is the specific purpose of the invention to control these entrances so that air is admitted when the burner is in operation, but completely shut ofi when the burner is idle.
This purpose is achieved by the use of a flexible arcuate member 84. This member is secured at 85 to one end of the housing 3, for example, to the flange 5, which is contiguous to the previously mentioned air entrances 8. The free end 96 of said member is adapted to move up and down so as to control said air entrances. A spring ea connected to the ends of arcuate member, is adapted to draw th free end toward the fixed end and so cause the closure of said en trances.
Said arcuate member ends have lugs 92, $3, which comprise the pivots for interconnected links M, 95, the former having a link 96 connected to the pivoted rocker 97 which carries the core 58 of the solenoid 93. The energization of th latter causes such turning in the linkage as to expand the member 84, and thus partially open the entrances 8. The deenergization of the solenoid permits the spring 9! to attract the member to the closed position.
I claim:
1. An accessory comprising a flexible arcuate member securable at one end to a wall contiguously to an opening therein, said member having its other and free end movable across said opening, a spring connected between said ends being adapted to contract the arcuate member to a closed position, power means for flexing said member thereby to move the free end away from the opening, and a linkage coupling said power means to the arcuate member and at the same time coupling the ends of said member together, said linkage employing the fixed end of said member as a fulcrum upon which to swing the free end thereof.
2. An accessory comprising a flexible arcuate member securable at one end to a wall contiguously to an opening therein, the other end of said member being free, interconnected linkage pivotally attached to the ends of the arcuate member, resilient means connecting said member ends to contract the member to a closed position over the opening, and power means to actuate the linkage to flex the arcuate member against the tension of said resilient means, thereby to expand said member and uncover the opening.
