The invention relates to paper-roll holders and has as an object the provision of a device designed to prevent pilfering oi the roll while permitting its removal by a person familiar with the mechanism.

In public buildings considerable loss occurs to the management by reason of the stealing of the rolls of paper. This has been prevented by the provision of roll holders which are locked by means not accessible until the empty holder core may be destroyed to give access to the latch mechanism. This structure has the disadvantage that it is frequently desirable that a janitor when making his round be able to remove a nearly exhausted roll and replace the same with a fresh one without destruction of the remaining paper on the exhausted roll in order to avoid making more frequent rounds for paper supply.

Other structures have been proposed wherein the roll holder may be locked by means requiring a special implement for its release, which has the disadvantage that the implement must be carried and is likely to be not at hand when needed.

In accordance with the present invention anyone who knows the structure can readily release the roll but the means of release is exceedingly f el unlikely to be discovered by a would-be pilierer.

Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a plan View partly in central horizontal section of the holder with a roll in place; and

Figure 2 is a detail side elevation on a slightly reduced scale of the holder with the roll omitted.

As shown the device comprises a base Il! to be secured to a supporting structure. Fixedly mounted upon the base is an arm Il which is opposed by the second arm I2 pivcted at I3 upon supporting ears I4 xed upon the base It).

To receive the hollow core of a roll of paper there are shown bosses I6, I5 carried by the arms II and I2. As is well understood, with the arm I 2' swung to dotted line position in Figure 1 a roll of paper may be placed upon boss I 6 and arm I2 may then be swung to position where its boss will enter the remaining end of the hollow the boss together with an angle member I8 55 riveted thereto, `the ends til, 28 of the bar and angle being secured to the inner surface of the boss by any desired method.

The end of the bar -Il is shown as provided with a keeper opening 2l providing a keeper at itsmargin t0 engage a latch member 22 pivoted at 23 upon the inwardly projecting portion 24 of an angle'member 25, the other portion thereof passing through the slot in the bess together with the latch 22 and being secured to the exterior surface of the boss. To urge the latch 22 toward the keeper, there is shown a tension spring 26 anchored at 2l and attached to the latch member 22' beyond its pivot.

The latch member 22 is shown as formed with an operating portion 23 projecting through the standard I2 to be engaged by a fingernail as shown in Figure l. To prevent unauthorized operation of the latch by one unfamiliar with the mechanism, the keeper engaging portion of the latch is shown as provided with a tongue 23 projecting beyond a notch 3%, which notch engages about the keeper forming margin of the keeper opening 2l whereby the tongue 2S hooks with the keeper As is usual with holders o this type, leaf spring members 3l, 32 are provided to preserve the centering o the roll in the holder, preventing endwise movement thereof. The said spring 32 in the present instance has a second function in addition to its usual function, thatv is, to hold the notch in the keeper opening 2l.

The bar ll is desirably made of spring metal and when so made the ringer member 28 may be moved easily and as often as desired by a wouldbe pilferer without release of the latch or giving any indication ci the mechanism.

If the arms li and I2 be relatively moved toward each other, as by the left hand as shown in Figure l, the notch 30 will readily leave the keeper and the latch may be very easily operated even by a fingernail as indicated.

1t will be seen that only relative movement of the arms il and l2 is required, for which purpose arm Ii might be given a slightly pivotal movement inward and none outward, and arm i2 may be pivoted for movement outwardly only.

By the expression normal position of use as applied to the arms and as used in the claims is meant the position they assume when the device is in use for the purpose intended, that is when a roll of paper is in place on the arms and ready to be unreeled for use. In the form of the invention shown in the drawing for purposes of illustration the position of the parts illustrated in full lines is the normal position of use of all the parts.

Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit thereof.

I claim:

1. A paper-roll holder comprising, in combination: a pair of arms mounted for relative movement toward and from each other; roll holding means carried by said arms; latch means to normally prevent movement of separation of said arms; spring means to hold said arms spaced to a limit preserved by said latch; and means to Yprevent release of said latch while the arms are so spaced operative because of such spacing.

2. The combination of claim 1 with means exposed externally of the roll and arms for manual operation of the latch toward releasing position.

3. A paper-roll holder comprising, in combination; a pair of arms; one of said arms mounted for movement toward and away from the other thereof; roll-holding bosses carried by said arms; a member having a keeper opening providing a keeper at an edge thereof, Xed to one of said arms to project toward the other arm within the core ofa roll of paper, latch means mounted on Ythe remaining arm for engagement with said keeper; means to prevent separation of the latch and keeper operable by movement of the said one arm away from the other when the latch is engaged with the keeper and releasable by movement of the said one arm toward the other; and means accessible exteriorly of the roll to cause releasing movement of the latch.

A paper-roll holder comprising, in combination: a supporting base; an arm xed on said base; a second arm pivoted to said base in spaced relation to the first named arm Yfor movement toward and away from the same; means carried by said arms to support the respective ends of a roll core; a resilient bar carried by one of said arms to extend inside a roll core carried by said arms and formed with an vopening providing a keeper at a margin thereof; a latch member pivotally mounted on the remaining arm to enter the core and having a recessed notch to embrace said keeper and providing a tongue to hook therewith to normally prevent separation of the latch and keeper; means carried by the latch, projecting through said movable arm for causing manual movement of the latch; and spring means urging said arms apart against the restraint of said latch.
