This invention relates to a tool for sharpening and shaping screw drivers, the general object of the invention being to provide a body adapted to be supported by a vise or the like and having a pair of shafts therein geared together and carrying grinding wheels, with means for rotating one of the shafts so that the grinding wheels will sharpen and shape a screw driver having its point placed between them. 4
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the space between the wheels.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the device.
Figure 2 is an edge View thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
In these views the numeral I indicates an elongated body having a reduced part 2 at its lower end adapted to be placed in a socket of a vise or other supporting member and said body has an enlarged upper end which provides the laterally extending parts 3 and said body has a longitudinally extending slot 4 therein which extends from its upper end to a point adjacent the lower end, this slot making the upper portion of the body slightly resilient. Each section of the enlarged part of the vise has a rearwardly extending bearing sleeve 5 attached thereto through which and through holes in the body shafts 6 pass for rotary movement. One sleeve is longer than the other and the shaft which passes through this long sleeve extends from the sleeve and to this extended part of the shaft a crank handle I is connected so that this shaft can be rotated by hand. A gear 8 is carried by each shaft and at the part which passes through the front face of the body and these gears mesh together so that rotary movement of one shaft by the crank handle will impart rotary movement to the other shaft. A grinding wheel 9 is also connected to the front end of each shaft, in front of the gears and the parts are held together by the nuts Ill threaded on the outer ends of each of the shafts. Each sharpening wheel is formed of steel and has teeth on its periphery,
these teeth performing the cuttingor grinding operation. Each shaft has its front end of noncircular shape in cross section to pass through a similar shaped hole in the gear and wheel so that the gear and wheel will rotate with the shaft. A screw l l passes through a threaded hole in one section of the body at the top thereof with the inner end of the screw unthreaded and fitting in a small socket l2 formed in the inner face of the other section so that by adjusting the screw the two sections will move apart to adjust the distance between the wheels and, of course, by loosening the screw the adherent resiliency of the body will cause the two sections to move toward each other and thus reduce the space between the two wheels. A collar I3 is suitably connected to the rear end of the shaft which passes through the short bearing sleeve to hold the shaft in position.
Thus it will be seen that by turning the handle 1 one shaft will be rotated and the gears 8 will impart movement to the other shaft so that the wheels are rotated in opposite directions and thus said wheels will sharpen and shape the pointed end of a screw driver or other tool placed between the wheels.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the claimed as new is:
In a device of the class described, an elongated vertically arranged body having a longitudinally extending slot in its upper portion passing invention, what is through the upper end of the body, said slot making the parts on each side of the slot slightly resilient, a screw passing through a threaded hole in the upper end of one part and having its inner end engaging a socket in the upper part of the other part, a shaft passing through each part from front to rear, bearing sleeves carried by the parts at the rear thereof and through which the shafts extend, a handle connected to the rear end of one shaft, gears connected with the front ends of the shafts and meshing with each other, the upper ends of said parts having recesses in the front faces receiving the gears and sharpening wheels connected with the front ends of the shafts in front of the gears.
