4 Claims. (01. 312-152) This invention relates to a mending kit.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of a mending kitincorporating a novel opening principle by means of which manual movement of one of the top trays thereof automatically causes movement in an opposite direction of another of the trays thereof so that the entire section of the mending kit is opened with a single movement.
A further object of the invention is the provision, of a. mending kit comprising a plurality of trays normally positioned one above the other so that each successive tray acts as a closure for the other, the uppermost trays being provided with separate lid portions as closures therefor.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a mending kit comprising two oppositely disposed sections of trays positioned on a single tray serving as a base and the whole provided with a convenient handle.
The mending kit shown and described herein has been designed to provide an attractive and convenient mending kit the various tray portions of which are quickly made available by simple sideward movement of the topmost tray of each section thereof, gear means in connection with pivot bearings of the said trays serving to reverse the sideward movement with respect to the different layers of trays.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mending kit showing the various trays thereof in closed position.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the mending kit showing the various trays thereof in open position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the gearing means utilized to accomplish the simultaneous opening of the various trays.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional elevation taken on lines 4-4 of Figure 3.
By referring to the drawing and Figure 1 in particular it will be seen that the mending kit comprises a. bottom tray and a pair each of center and upper trays II and [2, respectively, positioned thereon in a movable manner. The pairs of center and upper trays II and I2, respectively, are movably positioned with respect to the tray II] by reason of a tubular bearing assembly formed at each end of the tray [0 and extending upwardly. Each of these tubular bearing assemblies comprises avertically positioned bearing post l3 and two tubular sleeve sections [4 and I5 each of which-terminate in opposed flanges lfi'which are heldlin uniform separation and engagement'by means "of a pair of rollers I1 and a pair of gears l8, the'gears I8 engaging annularly positioned perforations in the flanges l6 so that clockwise, rotation of the tubular sleeve [4 and its flange It will result in anti-clockwise rotation of the tubular sleeve l5 and its flange l6 by reason of the reversal of movement through the gears [8. It will be seen that the sleeves l5 rest upon shoulders formed on the posts l3 at a point even with the top of the bottom tray ID. A nut I9 is threadably positioned upon a washer positioned on the upper end of the post [3 and sleeve l4 so as to insure the proper placement of the various component parts of the gear and bearing assembly. It will thus be seen that due to the fact that the tubular sleeves l4 and I5 are amxed to and serve to carry the trays I2 and II, respectively, that movement of either of the trays l2 automatically results in an opposite movement of the tray ll thereinunder and further it will be seen by referring to Figure 2 that due to the rounded shape of the trays and positioning of the hearing and gearing assemblies the three trays comprising each half section of the mending kit are opened almost completely thus assuring the practical and efiicient use of the space therein as the same is readily accessible. Housings Ha adapted to conceal the gearing are positioned about each of the gearing assemblies and are attached to and carried on the trays II as shown in Figure 1. In order to more definitely show the gearing assemblies the housing has not been shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4 of the drawing.
By again referring to the drawing it will be seen that each of the trays l2 are providedwith hinged lid portions 20 and that these lid portions 20 are in turn provided with knobs 2| so that the same may be readily opened. In this connection it is obvious that, if desirable, latches may be incorporated in the lid structure to insure the closure thereof. It will also be seen by referring to the middle section of the mending kit that a convenient handle 22 is positioned on the sides of the tray l0 and extends upwardly over the mending kit assembly in a practical and bonvenient manner. The tray [0 is also provided with a plurality of relatively short legs 23 all of which serves to enhance the attractiveness of the completed article.
By referring to Figure 2 of the drawing it will be seen that a central section 24 is provided in connection with the upper surfaces of the tray III in order to suitably close the opening necessary betweenthe movable trays II and i2 and in this connection it is obvious that this closure and I2 when in closed position.
It will thus be seen that a mending kit has 1 been designed comprising several trays neatly grouped together and assembled'in such manner that upon the manual movement of either of the.
uppermost trays to either side the tray immediately therebelow is caused to movein' the opposite direction so that in effectthe two trays'open fan like thus making availablefor use the lower most tray of the-kit; It will 'further be seen that the fan like opening movement is occasioned by an extremely simple gearing mechanism wherein movement of the supporting tubular sleeves of the-traysresul'ts in a reversing gear action" to eifect the movement desired; j
