AUGUST w.KooH, F oovINeToN, KENTUCKY.
DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,294, dated February 10, 1880.
Application filed October 4, 1879.
specification and accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 is a perspective elevation. is a top view, wit-h the sliding desk removed. Fig. 3 is a top view of the sliding desk, and Fig. 4. is an end View of'the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and compact desk, as will hereinafter be more fully set forth. i
In the accompanying drawings, B, Figs. 1
' and 2, represents the ends of my desk, having a permanent flat top, C, on the back part, as a receptacle for such articles as are used upon a desk.
The sloping top A has side pieces, A, which lap over the ends B of the desk, the flat portion A of the sliding top being cut -away'at the ends, forming openings at between the flat portion A and the side pieces, A, into which the ends B of the desk pass when the sliding top is pushed home. 1
A strip, B, is hinged to the under front side of the sliding top, and has at its ends and in the middle thereof gains B, which lap over the ends of the vertical strips E F G on thefront-of the desk. A look, J, is placed centrally in this strip B, which engages with the eye I, attached to the permanent top of the desk. 7
The strip E on the front of the desk is permanentl; affixed. The strip F is affixed to the door D, aportion of said strip extending over the edge thereof, so that it will lap over 40 the ends of the adjoining drawers.
The strip or cleat G is hinged at one corner Fig. 2
to the desk, so that it will lap over the ends of the drawers 0, and when it is desired to pull out the drawers the cleat will open and swing on its hinges, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will thus be seen' that the moment the sliding top A is pushed home, as shown in Fig. 1, the strip -B presses against the strip F on door D, and also on the strip G over thedrawers. W'hen secured by lock J all th apartments in the desk are closed. R
In use the sliding top A is drawn forward until a cleat (not shown) on the under side of the top A engages with the stop L on the permanent top M. This exposes the flat portion A" of the sliding top, which contains the money-drawer a and ink-cells b b.
By forcing out either of the drawers G the door D can be opened.
To insure the return of the strip G to its position against the front of the desk, a spring, H, is provided, one end of which is attached to the permanent top M of the desk and the other end to the free side of the strip, as shown. Any other kind of spring can be used; but for convenience I have here employed the rubber band H for this purpose.
--Having described my invention, what I .claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
