FIG.2
m m v m BY HERMAN T.ARENDS ATTORNEY Patented May 20, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MAGAZINE BINDER Herman T. Arends, Highland Park, Mich.
Application August 7, 1940, Serial No. 351,659
1 Claim.
The Present invention relates to magazine binders.
Among the objects of the invention is a binder especially suitable for use with single fold magazines, though other types may be bound therein.
Another object is a binder which shall be economical to make, easy to use, and one which presents a good appearance.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through a binder of the present invention containing its complement of magazines.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the back portion of the binder and a magazine,
Figure 3 is a partial end view in perspective, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a detail of construction.
In producing the binder, two strips of still fiber board or other suitable material, one slightly shorter than the other, are fastened together, preferably with suitable .adhesive tape, as shown in Figure 4, in which I and II are the strips and 12 the tape.
These strips are used to form the back of the volume and may be left fiat or may be curved. In either case the strip assembly and two cover boards l are covered with suitable fabric it, such as cloth, imitation leather, etc., and the strips further secured to the boards [5 by the hinge fabric IT. The boards are then suitably lined as at l8.
Over the inner surface of the thus prepared assembly is fixed a strip of suitable cloth of a width somewhat greater than the width of the strips Ill and H and having its edges 2| gummed.
This cloth strip 20 is, as shown, extended lengthwise of the strips l0 and II and with the gummed edges left free.
After the assembly has been completed, the cover fabric I6 is slit at the ends of strip II, as at 25, allowing access to the space between the strips I0 and II.
In using the binder, a suitable cord 30, or wire, or other filament, is first passed through the openings 25 in the back and between strips l0 and I l and then tied or otherwise fixed through the center fold of a magazine 35 as indicated in Figures 1 and 3.
The gtunmed edges 2| of cloth strip 20 are used on the first and last of the magazines to vice, a fabric hinge piece overlying said mem-.
bers and secured thereto and having its lateral edges fixed to said covers and a fabric cover sheet extending over the covers and fixed to said back members in such fashion as to allow access to the end of said short member and permit the passage of cords and the like lengthwise between the back members.
