1 Claim.
The present invention relates generally to display boxes of that type in which the cover or lid when raised, cooperates with the box body in a manner to support the complete box in open position for the purpose of conveniently and effectively displaying the contents thereof.
More particularly the present invention relates to a display box of the above general type, having for its primary object the provision of an arrangement in which the cover or lid is hinged to the box body in a manner to permit the lid or cover to incline in the open display position rearwardly from the body and not only sup-port the body in rearwardly and upwardly inclined position to better display the contents thereof but also to effectively expose to view the bottom or inner surface of the cover in such position for displaying printed matter including for instance instructions or directions as well as descriptive matter pertaining to the displayed commodity.
It is a further object of the invention to bring about the above novel arrangement without complications in so far as the box construction is concerned, and without adding to the essential parts of the ordinary construction.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the invention and forming a part of the specification,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the complete box showing the same in open, display position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken therethrough in the open position of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, with the parts in closed position, and
4 is a transverse vertical section through the complete box in closed position, along a line coinciding with the pivots between the cover and body.
Referring now to the above figures, the box as disclosed is square and although this particular shape need not be adhered to since for ornamental purposes it may be varied to a considerable extent, the body It] is shown as comprising a. base H surrounded by connected upstanding walls including side walls It and front and rear end walls 53 and 5 2.
The cover is shown as of similar construction, including a top I6 from which connected walls depend, including side walls El and front and rear walls i8 and [9, the cover being preferably of somewhat greater depth than the body it and being of dimensions slightly greater than those of the body to permit of the telescoping relation of these parts in the closed position as plainly seen in Fig. 3.
A hinge swingingly connecting the body it] and cover is formed by a pair of pivots 20 in transverse alignment with one another, connect- The two pivots it which, as before stated, are
in transverse alignment, are positioned through the side walls l2 of the body at points intermediate the upper and lower edges of these side walls, spaced from the rear end wall a distance somewhat less than the depths of the side walls I! of the cover. In their association with the cover !5, however, the pivots pierce the side walls I? at points which are spaced both from. the top and rear end of the cover distances slightly greater than the distances these pivots are spaced in the side walls of the body Hi from its rear wall M.
Thus the cover l5 may not only be raised and lowered between an open position in which access may be had to the body Iii and the articles contained therein, and a closed position in which the cover closes the body in telescoping relation, but the cover may be further opened by rotating its rear pivoted portion around the pivoted rear end of the body until the edge of the rear wall 19 of the cover engages the lower surface of the bottom wall ll of the body in which position the cover inclines rearwardly and upwardly with respect to the body in at an angle substantially greater than a right angle.
The closed and open positions as above described rnay be readily seen by a comparison of Fig. 3 with Figs. 1 and 2 and it will be noted that in the open position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the rear portion of the cover l5 depends substantially below the rear portion of the body it! and thus forms a rest for the latter which when placed upon a supporting surface cooperates with the lower front edge of the body to support the latter in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position whereby the articles, commodity, or other contents of the box body may be displayed plainly and to good advantage.
In other Words, when the lid or cover is raised the rear portion of the box body is automatically elevated so that said body assumes a forwardly and downwardly inclined position, thus adding to the display of the merchandise. time, in doing this, the lid or cover also assumes a forwardly and downwardly inclined position to better display its entire lower or inner surface to view.
As above explained, in such display position the body I is supported in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined manner, and at the same time the cover I5 is also positioned in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position sufficient to display plainly to view the entire portion of the inner or lower surface of its top wall l6 above the box body.
It is contemplated in practice that the inner surface of the cover, thus exposed plainly to view, will be provided with any suitable indicia for display, such as instructions or directions as to At the samethe articles or commodity, prices, and descriptions for instance of its make-up or intended uses. This space may also be used to effectively and 3, in order that the cover and body will be held in parallel relation in the closed position.
What is claimed is:
A box of the character described comprising a body having upstanding walls, a cover having depending walls to surround the walls of the body in telescoping relation in closed position, pivot members extending through the adjacent side walls of the body and cover at the rear portion of the box, said body and cover being each of substantial depth and said pivot members being aligned transversely of the box and disposed at points spaced from the rear Wall of the cover a slightly greater distance than from the rear Wall of the body and also spaced from the bottom of the body a substantially greater distance than from the lower edge of the cover, the pivot members forming a fixed pivotal connection between the body and the cover and the cover being carried by a single arcuate movement only into a body supporting position with its top and rear in engagement with the bottom of the body and said pivot members elevating the rear portion of the cover with respect to the body when the cover is in its closed position and a filler strip lining the interior .of the front portion of the cover at the top thereof and arranged to rest upon the upper edge of the body for elevating the front portion of the cover and cooperating with the pivot members in maintaining the cover and the body in parallel relation.
