'I'he'spring IDU isA of such a size, dimension, and compressionas to provide sufficient frictional drivey between the ends of the sleeve 95 `and the collars y96 and 98, so that during the normal rotationof the'shaft 33, the sleeve 95 rotates therewith. ,n n*
'i'rno sieovess .is provided with helical groove "-I03on its outer peripheral suriace. A Vsleeve v I04surrounds the periphery-,of the sleeve 95 and by the sleeve I 4 engages the so that when theshait 33 and apin IBS carried helical groovev ID3 providedVY andfis Islidably keyed to'the portion 138 of the feed` screw '2g and is arranged so`that it may be 'thrown' integer out Y of engagementwwith the pinion or gear 36 so that n Vthefeed 'screw 26 may be readily disconnected r from 'the hand wheel lirl'case it is desired to .control' the feeding rnevement of the' grinding [wheel bythe efluid pressure mechanism above which is fixed to the base I0.
l fying the movement of the gear ||4, it tends to sleeve 95 are rotated, the helical groove |03 and pin |05 serve to cause an endwise movement of vthe sleeve |04 relative to the sleeve 35.' The sleeve |04 is provided with an elongated slot 34 (Fig. 2) which is operatively connected by means of a pin 85 to the short arm |06 of a bell crank lever |01. 'Ihe bell crank lever |31 is pivotally mounted on a stud |08 carried by a bracket |39 A long arm IIII of the bell crank' |31 is connected by a stud to one end of a rod ||2. The rod |I2 carries a stud ||3 adjacent its opposite end-which rotatably supports a gear II4. The gear I I4 meshes with a rack bar vI I5 which is slidably supported in a portion |I6 of the base I0. The rack bar ||5 is connected to the end of the valve stem 51. A second rack bar ||1 meshes with the upper portion 'of the gear |I4 and is supported by a bracket IIB` which is flxedly mounted Lto the,
studs (not shown) which ride in the groovein the hub 90 of` gear 31. The yoked member |23 has a downwardly projecting arm '|22Ywhich isconnected by a stud |23 with a rod |24. The rod |24 projects from the front of the machine-base and is connected at its outer end by a stud |25 carried by a manually operable control lever I 26 which is pivotally mountedon a stud |21.
The stud |21 is supported by a bracket |23 projecting from the front of the machine base. In the full line position of the parts, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the gear 31 is out of .mesh with the pinion 36. When it is desired to connect the manually operable hand wheel 23 to rotate the feed screw 26, the lever |26 is` shifted into the dotted line position I26a whichv serves through the link |24, the lever |22, 'and' the yoked member |20 to slide the gear 31 Ain an endwise direction' into mesh with the pinion 36.
In the operation of this mechanism, as illus-. o trated in the drawing, when it is desired to cause an infeeding movement of the wheelslide |I and the grinding wheel I3, the manually 'operable feed wheel 29 is rotated in a counterclockwise direction (when facing the front of the machine) which serves to rotate the shaft r rack |I1 and thereby to cause an endwise movel ment of the rack |I5 towards the left (Fig. 1) to move the valve stem 51 in the same direction so that the valve pistons assume the positions as illustrated in Fig. 1, so as to admit fluid under pressure to cause the piston 4| to move toward the left and thereby to produce an infeeding movement of the wheel slide and grinding wheel I3. As soon as the piston 4I and the rack II1 start moving toward the left, thereby modifvwheel 23 iarotated at a uniform rate l`whichservestomovetherackbarlilllahiilyin -vvlmeelaswellastherackhar pistons'aremaintained in the positionof The upper end of the yoked member |20 is provided with opposed pins or r slowdownthemovementoftherackl|3,andto movethevalvestem'llintbeoppoeitedirectim If, however, the manually operable hand feed excess ofthe feeding movement of partsasillmtrated. Thespeedofrotation thehandwheelflllervestogovernthepositionk vmovement of the wheel I3 and work piece I3,
the feed wheel 23 is turned in the opposite direc- `tion which` serves ,through the mechanism above .described to shift the valve stem 31 sons to reverse the position of the valve pistons and admit duid under pressure into the cylinder chamber 3| to cause a rearward movement of the grinding wheel Iland the wheel slide 1f desired, the hydraulic feeding mechanism may be operated in combination with the feed screw mechanism, in which case the operator shifts' the control lever |23 into the dotted line .position |23a to throw the gear 31 into mesh with the pinion 33 so that when the hand feed wheel 23 is rotated to cause an infeeding movement of the grinding wheel, the feed screw 23 will be rotated and at the same time, through `the mechanism amove described, the control valve 34 will also be actuated to admit iiuid under pressure into the cylinder chamber 33 so that the nuid pressure supplements the rotation of .the feed screw in causing an. infeeding movement of the grinding wheel.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided by this `invention apparatus in which the various objects hereinabove set forth together with manyy thoroughly practical advantages are successfully achieved. As many possible embodiments may be made of the above invention .and as many changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be underl stood that all matter hereinbefore set forth or .shown in tht accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting Sense.
