2 Claims.
My invention relatesl particularly to cord terminals such as are used on hand carrying cords, although not limited to this use alone.
The object of the invention resides in the pro- 5 Vision of a novel cord terminal which securely engages the end portion of a cord to resist pull on the cord, which is susceptible to a compact and attractive form, and which is susceptible to convenience in manufacture.
With this object in View my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts by which the said object and certain other objects, hereinafter appearing, are effected, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying` drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the said drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cord terminal embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a face elevation of the stamping which is formed into the securing collar of my invention, as hereinafter described;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a cord with securing collars attached as hereinafter described;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a cord end portion preparatory to engagement in a terminal member in accordance with my invention;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the terminal member of my invention prior to its being secured with the cord end and collar of my invention, as hereinafter described;
Figure 6 is a sectional view in an axial plane of the aforesaid terminal member as shown in Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a partial sectional view illustrating in part a preferred manner of assembling the aforesaid terminal member with the remainder of the structure of my invention as hereinafter described; and
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the cord terminal of my invention similar to Figure 1 but with a part broken away and shown in section.
Referring to the drawing, I designates generally a flexible compressible cord which as shown is formed of braded textile material as is usual, and which is preferably cut to the desired lengths in the following manner.
Split metal collars 2 are preferably formed of strip stock and blanked, as designated at 3 in Figure 2, with oppositely corresponding stepped ends 4. These collars are encircled about the cord I in an obvious manner in compressing enga-gement therewith, as designated in Figures 3,
4, 7 and 8, with the stepped ends 4 thereof overlapping.
` Preferably, end portions of the cord I are formed by rst encircling the collars 2 in spaced relation about the cord and then cutting the cord intermediate the collars, as designated at 5 in Figure 3, to provide cord end portions 6, resulting in the collars being disposed in adjacently spaced relation with the resulting corresponding ends of the cord.
A generally cylindrical metal terminal member 'I is provided with a blind bore 8 extending inwardly from one end thereof. This bore is initially tapered and enlarged outwardly toward said end, as shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, and is provided with an internal flange 9 at its outer end.
'I'he other end of the terminal member 'I is flattened, as designated at Il, and is provided with a transverse securing aperture I2 by means of which the terminal member may be secured as desired.
Previous to the assembly of a cord end portion 6 and its collar 2 with a terminal member 1, it is preferable that adhesive material I3 adapted to be rendered plastic upon being heated, such as sealing wax, be applied to the portion of the cord end portion outwardly of the collar, as shown in Figure 4.
Then the cord end portion and its collar are engaged in the bore 8 of a terminal member, as shown in Figure 7, and the terminal member is constricted, while the adhesive material is heated or in plastic condition, about said cord end portion and collar with the flange 9 opposing the face of the collar facing oppositely With reference to the corresponding end of the cord, as shown in Figures 1 and 8, thus providing a strong engagement between the cord and terminal member which is Well adapted to oppose withdrawal of the cord end portion from the bore of the terminal member.
A device for constricting the terminal member 1 aforesaid is partially shown in Figure 7, and consists of a plurality of angularly arranged constricting members I4 slidably mounted between frame parts I5 and I6 for movement radially of an axis, a bushing I'I mounted on the part I5 and disposed on said axis and provided with an axial stop I 8, and an aperture I9 through the frame part I6 and disposed on said axis.
A terminal member with a cord end portion and its collar engaged in the bore thereof is inserted in the device through the aperture I9 and the end II of the terminal member is engaged in the bushing I1 and against the stop I8 to position the terminal member. The constricting members I4 are then simultaneously moved toward the aforesaid axis and, engaging the blind bore portion of the terminal member, effect the aforesaid constriction thereof.
While I have thus described my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the precise details described as changes may be readily made with# out departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
1. In a cord terminal the combination with an end portion of a flexible compressible cord, of a split metal collar encircling said end portion in compressing engagement therewith and disposed in adjacently spaced relation with the corresponding end of the cord, adhesive material applied to the portion of said cord end portion outwardly of said collar, and a metal terminal member provided with a bore extending inwardly from an end thereof and provided with an internal flange .at said end and into which said cord end portion and collar are engaged, said terminal member being constricted about said collar with said flange opposing the face of said collar fac ing oppositely with reference to the corresponding end of the cord.
2. In a cord terminal the combination with an end portion of exible compressible cord, of a metal collar encircling said end portion in compressing engagement therewith and disposed in adjacently spaced relation with the corresponding end of the cord, adhesive material adapted to be rendered plastic upon being heated and applied While in plastic condition to the portion of said cord end portion outwardly of said collar, and a metal terminal member provided with a bore extending inwardly from an end thereof and provided with an internal ange and into which said cord end portion and said collar are engaged, said terminal member being constricted, while said adhesive material is in plastic condition, about said cord end portion and collar with said flange opposing the face of said collar facing oppositely with reference to the corresponding end of the cord.
