Description
Sept. 13, 1938. R. E. SMITH BOXING GLOVE I Filed Sept. 29, 1957 INVENTO RafaeL E80 06%?5737Zfh WITNESSES I ATTORNEY-5 Patented Sept. 13, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to boxing gloves, and has for an object to provide an improved simple construction which is strong and effective when in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of glove wherein hard parts or portions are eliminated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a boxing glove so formed that the part that strikes the blow is free of all seams.
An additional object is to provide a boxing glove so formed as to eliminate the usual thumb and to accommodate the entire fist of a person when the glove is in use.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the structure shown in Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modified construction;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view through Fig. 3 approximately on the line 4-4;
Fig. 5 is a further modified form of the invention to that shown in Fig. 3 wherein an elastic band may be used at the wrist.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, I indicates the main piece of leather or other material to which is secured rounded side pieces 2 and 3. Suitable stitching 4 connects these pieces together. All three pieces I, 2 and 3 extend downwardly and form the constricted wrist portion 5 and the lower end portion 6 which is stitched or otherwise joined at l to an inner glove section 8 formed of leather or other material. The inner glove section 8 is constructed very similar to the outer glove section with the parts connected together by seams 9 which present a smooth interior connection in the same way that seams 4 present a smooth exterior connection. Suitable packing I is arranged between the outer glove section II and the inner glove section 8. This packing or pad may be cotton, wool, or other desired material, or mixture of any suitable material which will serve the purpose and yet be comparatively soft. The bottom end 6 is divided at It and provided with suitable eyelets l3 for receiving the lacing l4 whereby the wrist portion may be properly clamped to the wrist of a person using the device.
From Fig. 1 it will be noted that the part or piece of leather l extends over the end of the glove and also over part of the sides so that the various seams 4 are spaced from the point where the glove contacts with a person when the glove .is in use. It will also be noted that the construction does not include a thumb opening and consequently the hand must be inserted and clamped, after which the lacing I4 is tightened and the glove is then in condition for use.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the same exterior construction is presented as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, except that the lacing 4 and associated parts have been eliminated and an aperture I5 substituted. When this form of the invention is used a glove is placed on the hand and then a cord l6 wrapped tightly around the constricted part 5. After the cord has been drawn to the desired tightness it is tied and the ends and also the knot if possible are forced into or through the aperture I5 so that there will be no danger of these parts striking the opponent.
In Fig. 5 a further form is disclosed wherein the aperture I5 is eliminated and the constricted part 5' is used without any binding structure, or if desired may have a rubber band placed thereon. In this form of the invention the side covering pieces 2 and 3 are provided with central sections l1 and I8 having depressed portions l9 and 20 which permit a desired yield to the parts of the glove when a blow is struck.
In all forms of the invention the flanges from the seams are in the space occupied by the pad or stufling l0 and consequently these seams present smooth exterior appearances. It will also be seen that the glove essentially is composed of three parts, namely, the outer covering, the inner covering, and the pad or stufiing I0. It will also be seen that half of the glove presents a hemisphere and consequently presents a rounded structure when striking an opponent. This formation eliminates the probability of any of the padding bunching and forming hard knots which might cause unnecessary injury to the opponent. The formation which eliminates the thumb opening also results in protecting the thumb of the user of the glove, while at the same time preventing the user from grasping his opponent.
I claim:
1. A boxing glove comprising an outer covering formed from a single central piece of material having a cup-shaped contact end and a pair of substantially circular side pieces stitched to the first mentioned piece and forming a glove body presenting almost the shape of a globe merging into a tubular wrist part having an aperture extending therethrough and communicating with the interior of the glove, an inner lining of substantially the same shape as the outer lining, 2. padding between said linings, said merging into a tubular extension forming a wrist padding being the thinnest at the wrist part of part, said wrist part having a constricted porthe glove and thickest at the contact end, the tion and an aperture extending through the conaperture in said wrist part being adapted to stricted portion to the interior of the glove for 5 receive the free ends and knot of a cord tied receiving the free ends and knot of a. binding 5 about said wrist part. cord tied about said constricted portion.
2. A boxing glove including a globular part RAFAEL ESCOBAR SMITH.
