No. 212,422. PatentedFeb. 18, I879.

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
DENNIS O. BACON, OF LITOHFIELD,ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,422, dated February 18, 1879; application filed October 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DENNIS O. BACON, of Litchfield, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a thill coupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective View from underneath my thill-coupling.
A represents the shackle of the thill-coupling, provided with a clip, B, to be fastened to the axle of the vehicle in the usual manner. The shackle A is open at the bottom, and the central portion cut out or slotted in front, as shown at a, the shackle forming, as it were,-two jaws, G G, each having an inwardly-projectin g flange, I), along the top and front.
In the center of each jaw O is an inwardlyprojecting pin, h, which may be cast with the shackle, or inserted and fastened therein.
D is the thill-iron, made in T shape. In this Tiron is cut a slot or groove, d, extending inward from the end of each arm thereof,
to correspond with the length of the pins h h--- say, about one-third of the way.
The'coupling is made by raising the point of the shaft or tongue and placing the T iron in the shackle A from the bottom, and when the shafts or pole is lowered it makes a perfect coupling.
The slot to in the front of the shackle allows the raising and insertion of the T-iron.
This self coupling shackle has double strength, as it has fullbearing on the pins h h, and also against the flanges b b 011 the front part of the shackle.
A rubber, 'i, is placed in the back part of the shackle A to prevent rattling or noise, which might otherwise be made.
Instead of the pins h h, a single pin or bolt may be used, extending entirely across the shackle, in which case a continuous groove or slot will be made in the T-iron.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the shackle A, open at the bottom, and with front slot, a, flanges b b, and pins h h, with the T-iron D, having slots or grooves d (1, into which the pins h h take, all
constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of January, 1878.
DENNIS O. BACON.
