lMPRO'VEMENT IN BU CKLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,254, dated February 11, 1879; application filed November 29, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES F. MoLLoY, of West Haven, in New Haven county, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to that class of buckles commonly known as double buckles.

My improvements consist in a tongue for a double buckle, composed of a single piece provided on opposite sides with teeth or prongs, and also provided with closing portions for attaching the two bows.

My improvements also consist in a double buckle having a tongue made of one piece, which consists of a central bar provided on opposite sides with teeth or prongs, and having two bows, each independently connected thereto, so as to form two buckles, each of which may be operated independently of the other.

My improvements also consists in a double buckle comprising the combination of a tongue provided on opposite sides with teeth or prongs, and bows secured thereto by means of closing portions arranged upon the said tongue, and in details of construction to be hereinafter explained.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of the several parts of a buckle embodying my improvements Fig. 2, a plan of a complete buckle; Fig. 3, a transverse section thereof on the dotted line as m, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a plan of a modified form of buckle, also embodying my improvements.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A designates a buckle-tongue, andB B desi gnate bows adapted for use therewith. They are both preferably made of sheet metal.

The tongue is formed of a central bar, 0, having teeth or prongs 12 formed in one piece therewith, and projecting from its opposite sides. It is also preferably provided with Wings or closing portions 0, extending from its opposite sides. These closing portions may be arranged at or near the ends of the central bar, a, and are also shown as formed in one piece therewith.

The bows B are similar to those usually employed in buckles of his class. They are shown as of rectangular form, and as provided at each side with inwardly-projecting ends or arms d.

The parts of the buckle are fastened together by bending the closing portions 0 of the tongue A around the inwardly-projectin g ends or arms of the bows B, as represented in Fig. 2. The tongue then constitutes a connection upon which the bows may turn.

In Fig. 4 the tongue A is represented as,

being formed with a slot, A, in its central bar, a, through which the end of the strap or webbing with which the buckle is used may be passed. 7

In order that the slot may be made sufficiently long, I preferably bend the ends or arms d of the bows B outward instead of inward, and the central bar, a, of the tongue is made sufficiently long to permit the closing portions 0 to be bent around the said ends or arms outside the sides of the bows.

As only one tongue is employed instead of the two usually used in double buckles, the strength is increased; and as only three pieces are required to form the buckle and the bows may be secured to the tongue by one closin g, the cost of manufacture is greatly diminished.

As the teeth or prongs on'either side of the central bar combine with either of the two bows to form one of two independent buckles, the end of a strap may be secured in each buckle, and either strap may be disengaged without disturbing the other. I

What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A buckle-tongue for a double buckle, consisting of a single piece provided on op posite sides with teeth or prongs, and also provided with closing portions for attachin g-bows, substantially as herein specified.

2. A double buckle having a tongue made of one piece, which consists of a central bar provided on opposite sides with teeth or prongs, and having two bows, each independently connected with said bar, so that the teeth and prongs on either side of said bar combine with one of the two bows to form one 4.
