Description

June 21, 1938, F. TRAVAGLINI VEGETABLE WASHER Filed April '7, 1936 Frank Tra vag 327 2 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented June 21, 1938 VEGETABLE WASHER Frank Travaglini, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application April 7,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to vegetable washers, and has for the primary object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character in which various kinds of vegetables may be easily and quickly washed of foreign matter, the latter passing to a sump which may be conveniently emptied.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a vegetable washer constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view showing the device with the screen removed.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional View showing a door for the draining of the sump.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral i indicates a substantially cylindrical-shaped body having its ends fully open. In operation, the body i is positioned on a support in a vertical position and located adjacent the lower end of the body is a partition 2 forming an integral part of the body and sloping towards an opening 3 formed in the body. The Walls of the opening are beveled to be engaged by a gasket 4 carried by a hinged door 5. The door at one end is hinged to the body and is equipped with a latch member 6 capable of being moved into engagement with the keeper 1 carried by the body for retaining the door in a closed position. A portion of the door is of an increased thickness, as shown at 8, and is of substantially tenon-shape to fit Within a correspondingly shaped opening of the gasket 4. With the door in a closed position leakage from the sump will be prevented.
The partition 2 is concaved, as shown in Figures 2 and 3 to provide the desired slope towards the opening 3 and to form the sump.
Removable from the body and resting upon the 0 partition is a screen 9. The body is equipped with 1936, Serial No. 73,147
bles within the water foreign matter will pass from the vegetables and pass through the screen into the sump thereby freeing the vegetables of foreign matter. When it is desired to empty the sump of the accumulated foreign matter the latch member 6 is disengaged from the keeper 1 and the door 5 is swung to an open position. The vegetables being left in the body may then drain free of water.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A vegetable washer comprising a body having a side wall provided with an opening, a screen disposed within said body, a partition supported within the body below said screen and provided with a horizontally disposed flange throughout the greater portion of its periphery having its ends terminating short of said opening, said partition being concave and sloping toward said opening to provide a sump, said partition being provided with raised portions at each side of the opening adjacent to and outwardly of the ends of said flange, whereby a restricted passage is formed adjacent the opening having a size substantially equal to the size of the opening, the highest points of said raised portions being in the same horizontal plane as the flange, and said raised portions and flange adapted to engage said screen and support the latter in a horizontal plane above said opening.
2. A vegetable washer comprising a body having a side wall provided with an opening, a screen disposed within said body, a partition supported within the body below said screen and provided with a horizontalliy disposed flange throughout the greater portion of its periphery having its ends terminating short of said opening, said partition being concave and sloping toward said opening to provide a sump, said partition being provided with raised portions at each side of the opening adjacent to and outwardly of the ends of said flange, whereby a restricted passage is formed adjacent the opening having a size substantially equal to the size of the opening, the highest points of said raised portions being in the same horizontal plane as the flange, .said raised portions and flange adapted to engage said screen and support the latter in a horizontal plane above said opening, a door for masking and unmasking said opening and having a thickened intermediate portion of substantially tenonshape, and a gasket having a tenon-shaped opening receiving the tcnon-shaped portion of the door.
