dated May 17, 1921, and this invention therefore consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts, substantially as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.
An object therefore of the present invention is to substantially incorporate the features and objects of the knobless lockdisclosed in my said Patent No. 1,378,504, materially changed in its mechanical structure, however, and as greatly improved in its scope.
A further object is to provide a knobless lock embracing both main and auxiliary latch or bolt locking means, together with separate actuating means cooperatably positioned, whereby the auxiliary locking means may be employed to setlthe main locking means against actuation when pressure is applied-to the door to which the lock-is attached for moving said main latch in the manner disclosed in my said Patent No. 1,378,504.
A further object is to provide the auxiliary latch with a disengageable latch lock and release key means operatable on one side of the lock only so asto prevent the unauthorized opening of the locked door from the opposite side, without the necessity of fully extending the main latch by means of its-key.
. A further object is to provide an auxiliary latch which may be actuated from the side opposite that controlling the operation of the auxiliary locking means by meansv of the key for actuatingv the main latch.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear as this specification proceeds and as set forth in the appended claims.
I attain these objects by the lock disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a face View of my improved lock with the cover plate removed showing the auxiliary latch in locked position;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the auxiliary latch in unlocked or retracted position, actuated by either the lock key or the latch lock set and release key, and with the main latch retracted by pressure against the door;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Figure 5 is an elevation of the key used to actuate the lock shown in Fig. 1;
Figure 6 is a face View of a similar look but having an alternative type of key hole 'andshowing the latch lockset andrelease key means, together with cut-away portions of the lock cover;
Figure 7 is an elevation of the key used to actuate the lock shown in Figure 6, and
Figure 8 is a sectional view on-the line 8 -8-of Fig. 6.
In carrying out this invention,- Iemploy a mainlocking mechanism corresponding to that shown in my present patent, and cludes a latch and lock bolt l9 carried'by a lock casing l3 in a door Ill and'cooperating with a slotted lock plate l2 on the door jamb' I l. The bolt is normally held in latching position by means of a lever spring 28. At its upper end the lever is pivoted at 22 to the casing so that its lower end is urged against a shoulder 18 of said bolt by said spring, while a detent portion 25 on said lever engages in a notch 26 of the bolt to limit the outward movement of the bolt to latching position only. When the bolt is in latching position a roller 20 thereon extends into the slot of the plate l2 as shown in Figure 1, sufiicient to latch the door, but normally subject to release when pressure applied to the door, the pressure causing the roller to act as a cam on the plate 12 and'to be movedwith the bolt into the unlatched position shown in Figure 2. When the bolt is thus moved which essentially in- 23 of reversed C shape and a 15- is intentionally inwardly the shoulder I8' pushes on and rocks the 301 lever 23 so as to lift the 26, but upon removal of acts thru lever the detent and detent 25 clear of notch said pressure the spring 23and said shoulder IE to return bolt to their latching positions.
Provision is made for moving the bolt from latching into locking position (as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1) and vice versa, by means of akeysuch as shown 29, or any other suitable key which when inserted as is customary, may be turned to engage in a notch in the bolt.
A portion 24 of the lever 23 is exposed in the notch 30 so that: the. key will first engage and liftthe lever upon enteringsaid notch and then engage one of key engaging portions formed by the'sidesof the notch and move the boltin or out,
depending upon the movement of the key. When the bolt is movedinto locking position the detent 25 will engage in a locking position notch 21 in the bolt. When the lever 23 is raised by turning the key as aforesaid the detent 25 is moved out of J said notch 21.
It is now seenthat door knobs anditheir associated latch mechanism may be dispensed with by the use of thelock herein disclosed.
Referring further more in detail totheimprovement thereof, an auxiliary latch is provided with a hub 2 embracing reduced end portions 3 which serve as trunnions for pivotally supporting the latch I between the lock casing I3 and lock cover I4, said trunnions entering apertures 4 provided in the casing and cover. A cam portion 5 of the latch I extends therefrom between the casing I3 and an inner plate or shield 6 which is secured to said casing as by rivets l and spacers or washers 8. A pin 9 is set in the latch I near the extremity thereof for purposes hereinafter set forth. The shield 6 is provided with an aperture 6' of sufficient size and shape so as to permit the passage therethru of the key 29.
The extremity of the latch I is shaped as an arc concentric with the hub 2.
In Figure 6, a means is provided for the use of a style of a key different from the key required for actuating the lock shown in Figure 1, said means includes a pivoted cylinder C which is trunnioned between the casing I3 and the cover I4 in a manner similar to the mounting of the hub 2. This type of key lock with slight mechanical variations may readily be adopted to comprise a lock of the cylinder key type, the type shown being so shown as a matter of expediency merely, and not by way of limitation of the invention.
The latch lock set and release key K has a squared shank and is adapted for disengageable insertion into the hub 2 for actuating the latch.
In operation, when it is desired to prevent the unauthorized opening of the door III, the latch I is turned to the position shown in Figure 1, so that the shoulder I8 of the bolt I9 strikes against the arc shaped extremity of the latch I which is restrained against further movement by proximity of one of the spacers 8.
The latch I may be released by actuating it counter-clock-wise by means of the latch set and release key, or by turning the lock key clock-wise against the cam 5 as best shown in Figure 2.
The key is bifurcated so that the bifurcations straddle the shield 6 as the key is rotated, thereby determining that one of the bifurcated forks shall be restrained beneath the shield 6 so as to positively engage the cam 5 and at the same time by reason of the two forks, sufiicient width and strength is provided for operatively engaging the portion 24 of the lever 23.
The pin 9 carried by the latch i is designed to snap into either of the recesses 9 when the latch is moved to the locked position, or to the released position as the case may be, and thereby prevents accidental displacement of said latch, the latch being slightly resilient to permit this snapping action of thesaid pin.
Other than as thus described, the several component parts of my improved lock are identical with those shown and described in my patent as aforesaid.
It should now be apparent that by reason of the latch I, an auxiliary lock means is provided, and that an effective door locln'ng medium is obtained by merely moving the latch into latching position as shown in Figure 1, while the lock bolt is allowed to remain in the latching position also shown in said figure. In other words the door may effectively be locked without using the key to move the bolt into key-locked position, although this position may be obtained if desired.
The lock may be produced in various sizes and for various purposes, for light weight or heavy weighted doors such as screened or solid doors, for example.
For convenience, separate door pulls may be employed for drawing the door inwardly, if desired, none, however, are required, and no other substitution for the ordinary standard door knob mechanism need be made.
It is important to note that the main lock key may be used to release the latch I as well as the key K, and that said latch will remain in latched position when the bolt I9 is extended out of looking position. Thus, when the bolt is retracted from looking to latching position, the latch will prevent door pressure actuation of the bolt and it is therefore necessary to retract the latch by either method as aforesaid.
Readily produced from materials obtainable in the open market, and at slight costs, the lock readily commends itself for its ingenious fool proof features and thorough practicability.
I am aware that slight modifications may from time to time be made in the details of structure without departing, however, from the scope of the present invention, and as defined in the claims which are appended hereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact description of construction herein disclosed, but what I do claim is:-
l. A look comprising a casing, a single bolt operably related to said casing and arranged to latch a door when in one position and to lock the door when in an another position, a spring urged lever pivoted to the casing and engaging and normally maintaining said bolt in latching position, key engaging portions on said lever and bolt arranged to first actuate the lever to release the bolt and then shift the bolt when successively engaged with a key turned thereagainst, a latch, and means for moving said latch into and out of position for obstructing the unlatching movement of said bolt, and a key engaging portion on said latch for moving the latch out of latching position when engaged by the said key, and the latter is disengaged from the key engaging portions on said lever and bolt.
2. A look having a casing, a bolt arranged to be placed in either looking or latching position, key engaging means for shifting the bolt from one position to the other, recesses in said bolt, a lever pivoted to the casing and having a detent for engaging said recesses for retaining the bolt in its locking position and for restraining the bolt from moving from its latching position to its locking position, a spring for retaining the lever in its normal position, and a projection on the lever for engaging the bolt when in latching position for yieldingly holding it in such position, key engaging means on said lever for moving same to disengage the projection from the bolt and a latch pivoted to the casing and movable into and out of a position restraining said bolt against releasing movement out of its latching position, a key engaging portion extending from said latch between the ends therefrom and arranged to be engaged by the key for operating said bolt and said lever upon movement of said key in a direction opposite that required to operate said bolt and lever, and a detent projection on said latch, said casing having depressions adapted to be engaged by said detent projection to releasably hold the latch in operative and inoperative positions.
3. A look including the combination of a casing, a bolt mounted therein for disposition into and out of latching and locking positions, a spring loaded lever pivoted in the casing and having a portion arranged to engage and move the bolt of the bolt into and out of locking position, a latch, means operable at will for moving the latch into and out of position preventing the movement of the bolt out of its latching position, a key engaging portion on the latch operating responsive to engagement therewith of the bolt and lever actuating key, for moving the latch out of latching position, and a member on said casing disposed to be engaged by said key engaging portion of ment of the latch in one direction.
