lVly invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a hair waving device and particularly in a steam oven in which the hair vmay be enclosed While it is curled upon a prong and while steam is delivered thereto for the purposes of setting the curl in the hair.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, durable, and highly efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a clamp which will serve to clamp about the rolled wisp of hair and eifect a secure seal to form a foundation or base upon which the enclosing housing may be securely mounted in sealing relation.
It is another `object of the invention to provide in a device of this class means for easily Yand quickly moving the enclosing housing into sealing relation with the base.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this kind which may be easily and quickly mounted in position and which will permit of a ready removal and replacement of the enclosing housing While at the same time affording a device which is light. f
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the arrangement andV combination of parts hereinafter claimed and described.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which,

The device is used for permanently waving hair or for forming a curl in the hair. In such operations it is customary to use a metallic prong or rod 9 upon which a wisp of hair is wound to form the coils I0. The lower end of the rod 9 is spaced a distance from the scalp so that proceeding upwardly from the scalp there is a Vwisp of hair II about which the clamping device may be clamped. This clamping device comprises a side rail formed from the spaced strips I2 and I3, between which is pivotally connected one end of the side bar I4. The opposite end.
of this side bar is provided with a notch or recess i and the bar I4 is covered throughout the major portion of its length with a covering `I6 of rubber or other suitable yieldable material such as leather or vthe like. A similar side bar I1 is xedly mounted at one of its ends between the plates I2 and I3. or other flexible material is provided for the bar i1.. The opposite end of the bar is pivotally connected to an end rail comprising the plates i9 and Eil. Pivotally mounted between the free end of the plates I9 and 2l! is a cam locking lever 2| having a nose 22 which is adapted to engage in the recess I5 when the( bars I4 and I1 are moved together into clamping relation on the wisp of hair II. When this locking nose is engaged in the recess I5 and the cam lever 2l is swung in the position shown in Fig. 4, the bars i4 and I1 will be movedinto closed relation and the yieldable coverings or sleeves I8 and I8 will securely clamp the wisp of hair Il, thus elfecting a tight seal. It is for this reason that the covering seals E5 and i8 must be flexible so that it will serve to flow around thegwisp II when the clamping pressure Vis exerted on the barV I4 by means of the cam lever nose 22. The en-` gagement must be such that there shall be no space between the meeting edges of the covering sleeves I6 and I8.
A covering housing is provided formed gener- Vally from light metal such as aluminum or the like. This housing comprises the elongated portion 23 and the bottom portion 24 which is slightly enlarged. As shown in Fig. 4 this bottom portion 24 is cylindrical in cross section but the sides at the bottom are attened out to provide the flat surfaces 25 so that the housing at itsY bottom or open end is substantially rectangular in cross section. The upper end 2 6 of the housing is reduced in diameter and into this reduced portion extends the upper end of the rod 9.
Mounted on opposite sides of the -lower portion 24 of this covering or housing are pairs of spaced lugs 21 and 28 upon which are swingably mounted the adjusting keepers 29 and 3U. Each of these keepers is provided with an angularly A similar covering I8 of rubber turnedlug-forming portion 3| and 32 which em- Y braces the lugs 21 and 28. A pin 29' is projected through the lugs 21 and'32 and theA lugs 28 and 3l and positioned in embracing relation on this pin 29 between the lugs 21 and 28 is a coiled spring 32', one end 33 of which engages the keeper 29 or 38 and the other end 34 of which engages the bight 35 of the U-shaped memberf which carries the lugs 21 and 28. Each of these fio keepers is doubled upon itself in the lower end as at 45 to provide a body through which screws 36 may be threaded. Each of these plates I3 is doubled upon itself and upwardly offset as at 3l and provided with the outwardly turned, inclined portion 39 in which a slot 40 is formed. The screws 36 are adapted to engage in these slots 40, these slots being of less width than the diameter of the head 4| of the screw, so that as the keeper is rocked outwardly at its upper end and the screw head moves inwardly on the inclined portion, the housing will be brought downwardly relatively to the clamp and securely held in position thereon, thus effecting an air tight seal between the housing and the clamp which serves as its foundation or base. Formed on two of the opposite sides of the housing and projecting outwardly from the edge thereof is a V-shaped tongue 42 which serves to engage at the meeting edge of the sleeves I6 and I8 and effectively close the ends thereof against leaking. It will be noted that the slot 40, while extending through the inclined portion 39, also continues into the horizontal portion 43 so that as the screw head is forced downwardly on the inclined portion of the housing is brought closer into clamping relation with the clamp and base. As this movement continues and the screw head moves into the portion of the slot in the horizontal portion 43, a locking of the parts in xed relation is effected. It is believed obvious that by adjusting the screw 36 relatively to the doubled over portions 35, the degree of pressure exerted by the housing on the clamp or foundation may be adjusted.
In use after the parts 'have been assembled as shown in Fig. l and prior to the delivery of. steam thereto, it is customary to close the Vent opening L46 which is formed adjacent the upper end of the housing and deliver air into the housing under pressure to determine whether or not an air tight connection has been made with the base or clamping member. A fitting 41 is mountedrin anopening 4B formed in the lower portion of the housing and inserted into this fitting, which is generally of flexible material, is a nozzle 49 of a steam tube B which serves to lead steam from a suitable source of supply.
It is believed that the compactness and lightness of the device is easily ascertained from the description thus far given and that the advanages enumerated as being sought are thus accomplished and while I have illustrated the type of structure which has proven most satisfactory inuse, I do not wish to limit myself, to the precise details shown but to avail myself of such variations, modiiications and changes therein as will come within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising: a clamping frame embodying a pair of oppositelydisposed, relatively-movable side bars; a ilexible covering for the major portion of each of said side bars; means for moving said side bars relatively to each other for compressing the covering of one against the covering of. the other; a housing open at one end and mounted with its open end in engagement with one face of said clamping frame; engagement members carried by said frame, each of said engagement members having a portion extended parallel to said frame terminating in an inclined portion, there being a slot formed through said inclined portion and extending into said parallel portion; swingably mounted keepers on said housing; and a head-bearing member carried by each of said keepers and adapted for swinging into said slots for moving said housing into Ysealing engagement with said frame and locking the same in such engagement.
2.- In a device of the class described, a clamping frame; engagement members carried by said clamping frame, each of said engagement members having a portion extending parallel to said frame terminating in a portion inclined to said frame, there being a slot formed in said inclined portion and extending into said parallel portion; housing mounted on said frame; swingable keepers mounted on said housing; and a headbearing member carried by each of said keepers swingable into each of said slots, the head thereof engaging in succession said inclined portion and said parallel portion for moving said housing into sealing relation with said frame and locking the same in such relation.
3. A device of the class described, comprising: a clamping frame embodying a pair of oppositely disposed relatively movable bars; a flexible covering on each of said bars; means for moving said bars into and locking the same in clamping relation relatively to each other for clamping said bars on a wisp of hair extended between the same; curling prong, said curling prong being adapted for having said vvisp of hair curled thereon, said curling prong extending vertically to the outer faces of said bars; an elongated housing open at one end and positioned with its open end in engagement with said bars and extending vertically to the outer faces of said bars and engaging the wisp of hair wound on said prong; engagement members carried by said frame; and movable keepers on said housing, movable into position with said engagement members for moving said housing into sealing relation at its open end and with said bars and locking the same in such relation.
