Description
S. G. WILOOX. Rod and Bolt Outter.
- N0. 2II ,608. Palte nted Jan. 21, I879.
MPETERS. FNOTO-UTNOGRAPIIER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENTQFFICE.
SPENCER Gr. WILGOX, OF WEEDSPORT, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO A. H. WHITING, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.'
IMPROVEMENT IN ROD AND BOLT CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,608, dated January 21, 1879; application filed December 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SPENCER G. WILOOX, of Weedsport, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt and Rod Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bolt or wire cutter. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view thereof; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of the same.
The same letter in the several figures denotes the same part.
This invention relates to certain improvements in pliers or cutters for cutting bolts or rods, by which increased leverage and direct action of the-cutters proper are obtained; and it consists in the employment, in connection with a stationary cutter, of a movable cutter connected to the handles or levers by slotted elbows and pin, and in certain other details of construction, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A refers to an open head or frame, inserted laterally in the upper end of which is the stationary cutter B, with one side thereof projecting beyond the slot or opening in the head A, so as to limit its insertion into said head. It is held in place in said head by means of a headed pin, I), inserted through the upper end of said head, and entering an aperture or socket made in said cutter, as seen in Fig. 2.
The under surface of this cutter is beveled, not only to provide it with a cutting-edge, but also to aid in conducting the inserted bolt or rod to be out between the two cutters, as is apparent from Fig. 2. I
B is the movable or sliding cutter, confined in the head or frame A by means of the side pieces or plates, 0 0, one placed slightly in advance of the other, and fastened to the frame or head A.
The cutter B is similarly beveled as the cutter B, for the twofold purpose of cutting and aiding the guiding of the bolt or rod between the cutters.
The cutter B is extended inwardly, or provided with an arm, d, having an eye, d.
O O are the handles or levers, pivoted at their upper ends to the lower ends of arms e e, provided to the head or frame A, by headed bolts and nuts, as clearly seen in Fig. 1. These handles or levers are provided at the same ends with right angled portions or elbows f f, one located upon one side of the cutter and the other upon the opposite side thereof, those ends of the handles being curved or bent, as seen in Fig. 1, so as to cause their lower portions to stand parallel with each other for convenience in handling or using the same. They are prevented from coming closely together by inward or meeting projec tions g g, cast or formed upon their opposite surfaces.
The elbows f f are provided with slots f j", which receive aheaded bolt, h, passing through the eye in the lower end of the arm of the out ter B, and thus connecting the cutter to the elbows ofhandles O O. The slots in the elbows permit of the necessary movement of the parts as the cutters are put in operation.
By this construction and arrangement of parts it will be observed that the action of the levers is brought directly upon the central or movable cutter, by which increased leverage or power is obtained, and that the employment of rack and cogged mechanism, as heretofore, is obviated, simplifying the cutter and rendering it more substantial.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a bolt or rod cutter, the combination, with its stationary cutter, of a movable cutter, with its lower end connected to the handles or levers by slotted elbows forming part of said handles, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
2. The combination of the open head or frame, having a stationary cutter and inwardlyprojecting arms, with a movable cutter, and the handles or levers having slotted elbows and securing-bolts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: SPENCER G. VVILOOX.
