A positioning strip 16 is also provided within the ybracket 69, screws` 11 securing the same in position in orderthat the lock the head in the position shown ,in Figure 4. When the rack is moved in either direction from the position shown in'Figure 4, the cams 53 are turned and, upon motion thereof through 180 degrees, the rollers 65 are engaged and the base 50 is retracted from the flange 48 to unlock the head and permit the same to be removed.
In order that the fountain may be effectively p sealed to prevent substantial evaporation of-the volatile ingredients of ink that may be used in the housing, the head 49 is provided with a removable bracket 69 which is locked in a normal sealing position by means of a spring lock plate 10. To this end, the bracket isformedwith a plate 1| having a positioning flange 12. 'The head 49 is formed with a longitudinal shoulder 13 against which theflange 12 abuts to position theV bracket 69 properlyfwith respect to the head'. TheA endl of the head 49adjacent'the cylinder is formed with a boss against which the bracket 69 urges the sealing and positioning strips 14 and 16 when the locking strip 10 .has been moved to a locking position.
It will thus be seen that the bracket B9 may be readily removed from the head 49 when the spring lock strip 10 is moved-into a retracted position. In the normal position of the spring strip 10, however, as illustrated in lFigures' and 4, the bracket is maintained in anormal sealing position. The mechanism for actuating *the locking strip 10 comprises eccentrics 8| secured to the shafts 54. Links 82 are formed with apertures 63 which receive the eccentrics 8| and thus transmit reciprocating motion from the rotating shafts 54 to the links 82. At the other ends of links 82, apertured bosses 84 are provided, these bosses receiving stub shafts 85 which extend through a sealing plate 86 carried by the head 49, this plate being formedwith 4apertures 81 to receive the shafts 85. Above the sealing plate 86, the shafts 85 are vprovided with guides 88 which are received in formed with' slots 90 in which the shafts 85 are slidably received, bushings 9| being provided therein for this purpose. A reinforcing strip 92 is provided beneath the spring locking strip 10, nuts, 93 securing the foregoing elements in the assembled -position shown in Figure 4.
It will thus be seen that, when the eccentric locks 53are disengaged, the lock strip 10 will be retracted to permit the bracket 69 to be removed.

The upper end of the apron |49 is provided with an elongated groove |55 within which a doctor holder |56 may be secured by means of clamps |51 and bolts |58 (Figure 14). 'I'he doctor holder is provided with a flexible doctor |59 which thus is .caused to reciprocate in accordance with the ThE motion of the apron 49. A sealing blade |60 is secured to the top of the plate I4| and exerts an upward pressure Lagainst the doctor |59 as illustrated in FigureslO, 11 and 14thus effectively sealing the doctor |59 to the plate I4I.
As above noted, theplate |4| is adapted to rock upon the shaft |40 and, iny order that itmay be maintained effectively in the normal position c shown in Figures 10, 11 and 14, a locking mechanism is provided as illustrated in Figures 7, 11 and 13. For this purpose, the mounting heads I 38 are drilled to receive lock pins I6| slidably therein. 'Ihe lock pinsv |'6I are formed with gear teeth |62 with which pinions |63 engage, pinions |63 being formed uponstub shafts |64 `which are journaled in the mounting heads |38. In order that the doctor may be maintained effectively in wiping engagement with a printing cylinder, a pressure blade |69 is provided, this pressure blade being mounted'upon a cover |10 which is pivotally mounted on the apron |49 by means of links |1| which are pivoted to the apron at I12and to the cover at |13. The links |1| areformed with flat bearing surfaces |14 which are adapted to engage the top of apron |49 in the `normal position of the mechanism as illustrated in Figure 10. The links are positioned against endwise displacement by flanges |49a formed on plate |49. The pressure blade I 69, carried by the cover |10 is urged into the position shown in Figures 10, 11 and 14 by means of eccentric cams |15 which are mounted upon a shaftk I 16, journaled in brackets'l11, carried by the cover |10.
The cams are adapted to engage rollers |18 which are mounted upon brackets |19, carried'by the apron I 49, and rotation of the shaft I 16 is effected by means of a worm wheel |80 (Figure 14), the Worm wheel beingfsplined or otherwise secured to the shaft |16 and engaged by a Worm I8I, formed upon av stub shaft |82 which is journaled in the cover |10. The stub shaft |82 extends` downwardly from the cover and receives a knurled knob |83 in order that the vstub shaft may be rotated to rotate the shaft |16. In this fashion when the cover has been swung into such position that the contact member |14 engages Ythe apron |49', the knurled knob |83 `is turned until the eccntrics |15 force the cover effectively into the closed position shown in Figure 10, at which time the pressure blade |69'engages the doctorK |59 to force thesame into the wiping position illustrated, at the same time causing the sealiing blade to be deflected, asillustrated in Figures 10, v11'and 14.

In order that' the ends of .the housing may be sealed effectively, end seals are provided thereon, such end seals comprising arcuate plates |84 upon which gear sectors |85 are provided. This structure is shown in Figures 8, 9 and 17. In this fashion, the plate |84 is mounted for sliding movement about the axis of a printing cylinder |96 which is illustrated in Figure 9, 'as well as in Figures 3, 4, 10, 11 and 14. This strip (Figure 17) lies under the overhanging portion of plate |84 and projects circumferentially thereunder the sealing strip 14 and an effective seal* between the strip, housing end wall and cylinder is thus preserved in view of the fact that the strip 14 does not move during operation of the press. Inasmucli as the doctor |59 reciprocates, the sealing plate |84 cannot lie beneath the doctor because of the objectionable wearY resulting therefrom. In accordance with the present invention, the hand wheel |90 affords a means by which the plate |84 may be advanced against the doctor |59 into abutting sealing engagement therewith (see Figures 8 and 17) when the latter has been moved to its wiping position, thus preserving an effective seal between the housing end wall |86, cylinder |96, and doctor |59.
As illustrated in Figures 7 and 16, the shaft |16 is provided with avclamp 200 having an arcu ate indicator dial 20| upon which suitable indicia is inscribed. By means of the pressure indicator construction above described, a permanent initial, setting for a given size printing cylinderis provided, such initial setting serving to enable the position of the wiping mechanism to be adjusted properly. In operation, a doctor knife |59 having a new wiping edge is mounted in the machine and the indicator 200 is moved until the first or zero number appears through the aperture 203 on the cover |10. The wall plate |4| is next adjusted by means of the wrench end "|31 until a clean wipe is obtained on the printing surface |96. During operation and as the edge of the doctor wears, the operator turns the knob |83 to compensate for such wear until the indicator reaches the limit of its reading and until the arm 205 reaches the limit of slot 201. At this stage, the operator cannot apply more pressure to the vdoctor because of the lock afforded by the arm and slot of the indicator. At this point the indicator shows the operator that the wiping edge of the doctor has been worn to its tolerable maximum and the reconditioning of the edge is now necessary. Having replaced the worn doctor with a reconditioned or new one, a clean wipe will be obtained when the indicator is brought again to zero position, without having to readjust the wiping mechanism. In this fashion the initial setting may be considered as a permanent one as long as the diameter of the printing cylinder remains the same. Furthermore, by means of the above indicator, the cover |l may be moved and returned again into its normal operating position without affecting the pressure adjustment of the pressure blade |69. This is done simply by restoring the indicator dial to cover was moved from its normal operating position. The zero position of the indicator may be changed by movement of the dial upon the shaft |16 and the limit position afforded by the slot 201 may be changed by changing the position of the bracket carrying the arm 206. l
It will thus be seen that the construction described herein provides an improved fountain wherein the operating parts are enclosed and maintained away from the ink and ink vapors within the housing, the construction also being Ythe same number which existed at the time the ate plate |4| by means of the shaft |40 and |45.
In this fashion, if the sealing blade |60 fails to effectively seal the doctor along the entire length thereof, and ink escapes at such faulty seal, it will flow down the upper surface of the arcuate plate |4| and not contact the reciprocating and control portions of the doctor mechanism.
