' IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATORS FOR HATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,527, dated January 21, 1879; application iiled December 13, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL SCHU'FFLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators for Hats, of which the followin g is a specification:

In the accompanying drawings, Figurel represents a vertical transverse section of a hat with my improved ventilator, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ventilating device detached.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to furnish for hats, caps, &c., an improved ventilating device of simple, cheap, yet durable construction, which is pliable, so-as to fit itself readily to the head, and extended either around a part or around the entire circumference of the hat.

The invention consists of a ventilator for hat-s, &c., composed of an angular piece of wire-cloth, that is doubled up at the front edge for greater stiffness, and attached to the under side of the rim, the sweat-band being attached to the upright portion of the ventilator, which is set back from the body of the hat, so as to provide a space for the entrance of the air.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a hat or other head-covering, and B the ventilatin g device, which is made of wire-cloth, thin reticulated sheet metal, or other suitable material.

The ventilator B-is arranged so as to extend either around a part or the entire interior circumference of the hat, it being first cut in the proper size from the wire-cloth or other material, and then stamped in a suitable press into the required shape.

The ventilator B is so shaped as to form an angle somewhat larger than an angle of ninety degrees, the front portion, a, being slightly inclined and doubled up at the front edge for the sake of greater stiffness. The doubled-up front edge is stitched to the under side of the hat-rim in such a manner that the upright rear part, b, is at some distance from the body of the hat. The sweat-band is attached to the upright portion, as shown in Fig. 1. The air passes through the spaces between the body of the hat and the sweat-band, and serves thereby to keep the head cool.

The ventilating device is properly varnished, so as not to be liable to corrosion.

The material from which the ventilator is made is pliable, and conforms itself readily to the shape of the head, so that the hat fits snugly, yet lightly and comfortably, on the same.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A ventilating device for hats, &c., consisting of an angular piece of wire-cloth, or equivalent material, of which the lower, or nearly horizontal, flange is extended beyond the body of the hat, over onto the under side of the brim, while the upright or rear portion is attached to the sweat-band at some distance fromthe body of the hat, substantially as set forth.

2. A ventilator for hats, &c., made of an angular piece of wire-cloth, whose front or horizontal flange is extended over the under side of the brim and stiffened by a doubled-up rim at the front edge, while the upright rear portion is secured to the sweat-band at some distance from the body of the hat, substantially as described.
