DETACHABLE SHOE HEEL Filed Jun e 10, 1937 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 .4 iior'neys atented liar. '2, i938 DETACLE SHOE HEEL Everett W. Moss, ichita Falls, 'llex. Application .ll'unc 10, 1937, Serial No. lldijdd' ll Claim. (M. 33-42) This invention relates to heels for shoes, and particularly to what is known as a detachable heel, and has for its object the provision of an improved arrangement of securing means wherea by the heel may be quickly and easily applied and removed, and when applied will be held rigidly in place.
The invention, together with its objects and advantages, will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a shoe with the detachable heel in place.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view,
with the detachable heel removed.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the detachable heel.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the detachable heel.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-45 of Figure 2.
Figure '7 is a fragmentary perspective view of a plate carried by and embedded in the detachable heel.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary edge elevational view of a plate secured to the under portion of a shoe.
Figure 9 is an elevational View of an attaching screw.
Figure 10 is a bottom plan view of an attaching screw.
Figure 11 is a perspective View, of a lock washer.
Figure 12 is an edge elevational view of a lock washer.
In accordance with the present invention, there is riveted or otherwise secured as at 5 to the under face of the under portion 6 of a shoe t, a
substantially D-shaped plate I, which at intervals has pressed outwardly therefrom apertured substantially semi-spherical projections or protuberances 8.
The detachable heel indicated by the reference 7 numeral 9 is provided in the face thereof to be disposed against the under portion 6 of a shoe 1 with a plurality of depressions or recesses i0 complemental to the protuberances 8 to conformably receive the protuberances 8 in a manner clearly shown in Figure 5. Thus the protuberances 8 and the recesses l0 act as cooperating guide means for properly positioning the heel 9 on the under portion 6.
In line with the depressions Ill, the heel 9 is provided with sockets or recesses ill opening through the under face thereof and connected with the recesses It through bores or openings l2.
Embedded in the heel 9 is a substantially U- shaped plate i3, portions of which are exposed at. 5 the sockets H, and said exposed portions of the plate ii are provided with apertures it which align with the holes i2.
Adjacent each aperture it there is provided on the plate H a stop lug l5 hereinafter more fully 10 referred to.
For securing the heel 9 to the under portion 6 of the shoe, there are provided screws it which extend through the aligned openings l2 and i l and thread into the openings in the protuberl5 ances 8 of the plate I, as also clearly shown in Figure 5, whereby to detachably secure the heel 9 to the under portion 6 of the shoe.
For each bolt it, the head of which is received or accommodated within a socket ii, there is 20 provided a lock washer H.
As shown in Figures 11 and 12, each lock washer ll is split and has the ends l8, l9, thereof formed by said split slightly curved in reverse directions relative to one another from the plane 25 of the washer and arranged in overlapping relation.
Also, the head of each screw It, as clearly shown in Figures 9 and 10, is provided on the under side thereof with a ratchet-like formation 20. 30
It will thus be seen that when the screw it is threaded home, the same cannot be threaded outwardly of the socket H, for the reason that counterclockwise rotation of the screw is prevented by reason of the engagement ofthe end 35 I8 of the washer i! with the lug i5, and the end 99 of said washer with a tooth of the ratchet surface 20 on the under face of the head of the bolt I6. Thus it will be seen that the arrangement is such as will permit the screw to be threaded 40 home, but will positively prevent the screw from being unthreaded with the result that in order to remove the heel 9, sufilcient forceful twist will have to be given to the screw in order to shear the threads thereof before the screws can be 45 withdrawn and the heel 9 subsequently removed.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of the invention of this character will be had without a more detailed description. 50
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a heel for a shoe, a. plate secured to the under portion of the shoe and provided at intervals with apertured protuberances, a heel provided in one face thereof with recesses oomplemental to said protuberances, and in an opposite face thereof with sockets, said heel being also provided with holes extending from the sockets to said recesses to accommodate fastening screws, fastening screws extending through said holes and threadedly engaging said protuberances, the heads of the screws being accommodated in said sockets, a plate member embedded in said heel and having portions thereof exposed at said sockets, the exposed portions of said last-named plate being provided with openings to accommodate said faces of said screw heads for locking said screws 10 against withdrawal.
