Application January 2, 1935, Serial No. 129k 'I Claims.
This invention relates to hair clippers and has for its object to provide a novel form of clippers which is especially adapted for .use in closely cutting superfluous hair of the body.
Another object of this invention is to provide the clippers with a novel form of cutting blade with which the hair can be emciently cut on ilat as well as convexly and concavely curved surfaces of the body.
A further object of this invention is to provide the clippers with a novel operating mechanism.
All these and other objects of this invention will become more readily apparent from the detailed description thereof which follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which f Figure 1 is aside elevation of the novel clippers.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the clippers.-
, Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the head of the clippers. the section being taken on the line Sat-3a: of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the head of the clippers, the section being taken on the line MIJ-4a: of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the clippers taken on the line Erf-5a: of Figure 3.
- In the several ilgures of the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts. v
The novel form of clippers for cutting the superfluous hair of the body forming the subject matter of our present invention makes these clippers especially adapted for use in closely clipping the hair in concaved portions of the body such as, for example, in the arm pits although the clippers will clip the hair equally well on the more or less convex portions of the body.
As illustrated in the several ilgures of the drawing the clippers has an elongated preferably cylindrical hollow handle I to which is threaded the cap 2. Thisrcap is enlarged at its junction with the handle I so as to provide an annular ridge 3 which projects beyond the outer wall of the handie for a purpose that will hereinafter be `described. From the-outwardly projecting ridge 3 the cap tapers toward the topV to provide a reduced outer end 4 thereon to have thencutter head form a continuation thereof.
, The cutter head comprises the stationary circular cutter disc 5 located on the outside of the clipper head and the oscillating circular cutter disc 6 located on the under side of the stationary disc. Suitable teeth 1 and 8 are provided in the periphery of these respective cutter discs which cooperate to closely clip the hair as it enters the openings between the teeth.
` The outer stationary cutter disc is held supported on the outer end of the supporting rod 9, and is clamped to the shoulder I0 thereof by means of the nut II and lock washer I2. The
supporting rod in turn is flxedly anchored in the base I3 which is clamped in place in the end of the handle I by means of the cap 2. Supported by a suitable bearing plate I4 on the base I3 and surrounding the supporting rod 9 is the driving sleeve I5 which is osciliated to operate the cutter disc 6. For this purpose the outer end of the driving sleeve carries the driving disc I6 which is provided with a series of driving pins I1 which engage into suitable holes in the cutter disc yIi to hold this disc centered thereon and fixed thereto. A spider shaped spring I8 is interposed between the driving disc I6 and the under side of the cutter disc 6 and operates to hold the cutter disc 6 yieldingly against the under side of the cutter disc 5. Suitable short lugs I9 project from the driving disc and hold the spider shaped spring in a predetermined xed position on the driving disc I6 between it and the cutter disc 6.
The driving sleeve is provided near its inner endwith the driving pin 20 which projects radially therefrom and carries the connecting bearing 2|. This bearing is slidabiy mounted in the `outer end of the oscillating arm 22 so that on the oscillation thereof the bearing provides a floating connection between the arm 22 and the pin 2I and oscillates the driving sleeve in a horizontal plane on the oscillation of the arm in a vertical plane. The arm 22 forms part ofthe vyoke shaped operating member 23. which is mounted to oscillate on the pivot shaft 24. Movement is transmitted to the operating member thru the rocker arm 25 which is fulcrumed on the pin 26 and engages the under side of the operating member with its outer end. At a point intermediate its fulcrum and its point of engagement with the operating member, the rocker arm is provided with a pocket 21 into which engages the end of the operating rod 28. This rod is non- -magnetic and is mounted to slide and projects thru the fixed armature 29 into enagement with the end of the movable core 30 of the solenoid 3l. An expansion spring 32 acting against the lower end of the movable core yieldingly supports the movable solenoid against the pressure of spring arm 32A whichis mounted in the base I3 and exerts a downward pressure against the operating yoke 23 and thru the rocker arm 25 against the operating rod 28 so that the movable in the solenoid 3|.
The solenoid is supported on the base 33 which in turn rests on the shoulder .34 within the handle I. In this way the cap 2, when threaded onto the handle I, holds the base I3 down onto the solenoid 3| and the solenoid against the base 33 which in turn holds the base 33 against the shoulder 34 so that all of these members are firmly held together and iixedly mounted in the handle by the attachment of the cap 2 thereto. A cork or other resilient washer 35 is interposed between the base I3 and the solenoid to take up any slight variation in the length of these members and prevent too great a pressure from being exerted on any one of them.
Suitable terminals 36 and 3'I are carried by the base 33 and are connected to the leads of the solenoid to provide for the electrical connection by means of asuitable extension cord 38 which enters the bottom. of the handle I thru the opening 39.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the reciprocating motion of the oatingY core 30, caused by an alternating currentpassing thru the solenoid, vreciprocates the operating rod 28 and oscillates the operating yoke 23 and its arm 22 by means of the rocker army 25. The oscillating motion of the arm 22 in turn is transmitted to the driving sleeve I4-by means of the connecting pin 20 and its connecting head 2|, and the driving disc I6, carried by the driving sleeve,l
causes the cutter disc 6 to oscillate on the under side of the stationary cutter disc 5 for the cutting operation.
As will be seen from an inspection of Figure 1 the annular ridge 3 of the cap 2 overhangs the handle I so that-when the clippers is laid on the table or other flat surface, it is supported in an inclined position in order to keep the cutter discs from coming in contact with the supporting surface and being damaged thereby. In Figure 1 the dotted line marked 40 indicates the line of support for the clippers when "placed on a iiat supporting surface.
As will be seen from an inspection of Figure 2 the cutting teeeth 'I of the stationary cutter and the cutting teeth 8 of the oscillating cutter are oiset so as to have their cutting surfaces and their frictional contact with each other ret duced to a minimum. In this way'only the teeth of the cutters, which form but a small portion of the cutting disc, are in frictional contact with each other. This is an essential feature in this type of clippers because the power of a solenoid embodied in the handle of the clippers is necessarily limited. Reducing the frictional contact between the cutting teethin this manner also permits the use of a yielding pressure which is exerted by the spring I8 against the movable cutting blade and have the movable cutting blade oscillate by the limited power generated by the solenoid.
