This invention relates to What are known as covered joint hinges and particularly to hinges of this type designed for use in connection witmotor vehicles to hin edly support the doors in connection With vehicle bodies; and the object of the invention is to provide a hinge or the character defined, the hood loutt. part of which is formed from two substantially similar sheet metal blanks arranged and nesting one within the other to form complete hood butt whereby the cost of production of a butt of the class described is reduced, and at the same time, a stronger and more durable outt is provided; and w these and other objects in view, the'invention consists in a hinge of the class and for purpose specifled, which is simple in construction, efiicicntin use, and which is constructed scribed and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed ing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

By virtue of the manner of constructing the pintle bearing portions I 0, 10a, there is no possibility of the spreading or opening of such bearings which has been experienced with other types of hinges including inserts having rolled or curled pintle bearing portions.
Where the question of appearance is 'not an important factor, the hood end portions of the two butt parts may be made identical in design and contour and arranged to fit snugly one within the other, it being understood that the cutting out of part of the curved hood portion of the inner part as shown in the accompanying drawing is merely to adapt the hinge to the design and contour disclosed. V
. In Fig. 6 of the drawing I have shown a slight modification. In this construction, the outer part 23 and inner part 2| of the butt are of the same construction throughout; in other words, these parts have hood portions 22 and 23 respectively which are continuous to the outer or free edge The top and bottom walls of both hood portions or parts forming the pintle bearings, one of which is shown at 25 in Fig. 6, are substantially the same as the bearings I6 shown in Fig. 2, the only difference being that the pintle aperture 26 of the bearings 25 is located inwardly a sufficient degree to provide clearance for the pintle bearing of the other companion butt of the'hinge to clear the hood portion 23, as will be apparent. With this construction, the
7 side flanges such as shown at M in Fig. 2 of the unite the parts against separation, and protruding edges of the inner part 2! or thehood portion 23 and walls 25 thereof will be trimmed to correspond to the size and contour of the similar portions of the outer part 20 of the butt. The apertures 26 are formed after the two parts have been assembled.
While welding is not essential with the construction shown in Fig. 6, the attaching plate portions 20a, 2| a of the parts 20, 2| may be welded together if desired. While I have stated that the two parts 26, 2! may be of identical size and'construction and assembled in the manner above defined, the inner part 2i may be made slightly smaller than the outer part or to forcibly fit within the outer part so as to insure firm engagement of adjacent walls, especially throughout the hood end portion of the resultant butt.
The thickness of the sheet metal'employed in the separate butt parts may be varied to suit the requirements in the wall thickness of the attaching plate portions of the butts as well as the pintle bearing portions thereof. In other words, if quarter inch thicknesses are required in the resultant butt, one-eighth inch sheet metal will be employed; whereas, if three-eighth inch is desired, three-sixteenth inch sheet metal will be employed, etc.
My improved hinge may be constructed from two sheet metal parts of substantially the same contour wherein one part is constructed from a sheet of metal thinner than the other part, but in all such cases, the pintle bearing portions will be formed from the two sheet metal parts and bent or drawn inwardly from opposite side edges thereof by suitable dies which also form the hood portions.
Hinges of the class under consideration may be economically produced by reason of the fact that all machine operations such as grinding, planing and the like are eliminated. At the same time, finished surfaces are provided for receiving the companion butt of the hinge.
The more important phase of the present invention is in the provision of the reinforcement of the hood and the provision of the relatively thick pintle bearings which could not be practically formed in a single pressed sheet of metal unless the workpiece were first heated, the expense of which operation would again materially increase the cost of production of the resulting product. It is one of the outstanding features of my invention to produce the desired structural result in the most economical and practical manner and at the same time produce a hinge butt of added strength and utility as compared with other butts of its kind.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: a
1. A hinge butt for covered joint hinges comprising two sheet metal inner and outer parts, the outer part comprising an attaching plate, a curved extension at one end of the plate, and top and bottom walls continuous with said extension and plate, and the inner part comprising an attaching plate, a curved extension at one end of the plate, and top and bottom walls continuous with said extension and plate and conforming with the contour of I and fitting snugly within the top and bottom walls of the outer part and forming relatively thick pintle geairings at the upper and lower sides of said 2. sion at one end of said attaching plate, and top and bottom walls continuous with the side edges of said extension and attaching plate, said butt parts being arranged to fit snugly one within the other and secured together, top and bottom walls of said butt parts forming on the resulting hinge butt, pintle bearings substantially equal in thickness to the sheet metal of both butt parts combined and having apertures for receiving the pintle of the hinge, and the side edges oithe attaching plate of the outer butt part including flanges overlying the side edges butt parts combined and having apertures for receiving the pintle of the hinge, the side edges of the attaching plate of the outer butt part including flanges overlying the side edges of the inner butt part, and the curved extension of the inner butt part being shorter than the extension of the outer butt part to provide clearance for the pintle bearing of the; other butt of. the hinge.
8. In covered joint hinges, a hinge butt composed of two sheet metalbutt parts, each part comprising an attaching plate, a curvedextension at one end of said attaching plate, and top and bottom walls continuous with the side edges of said extension and'attachin'g plate, said butt parts being arranged to fit snugly one within the'other and secured together, top and bottom walls of said butt parts forming on the resulting hinge butt, pintle bearings substantially equal in thickness to the sheet metal of both-butt parts combined and having apertures forv receiving the pintle of the hinge, the side edges of the attaching plate of the outer butt part ineluding flanges overlying the side edges'of the inner butt part, the curved extension of the inner butt part being shorter than the extension of the outer butt part to provide clearance for. the pintle bearing of the otherbutt f the :hinge, .and the top and bottom walls of both butt parts extending inwardly to overlie the edges of the attaching plate portion of the other butt of the hinge when both butts are in closed position. A hinge comprising two hingebutts, one of said hinge butts being composed of two parts arranged and fitting snugly one within the other, each part of said butt having at one end a curved extension including top and bottom walls continuous with and extendingangularly from the upper and lower edges of said extension, and the adjacent top and b'ottornwalls of said parts collectively forming thick pintle bearings.
10. A hinge comprising two hinge butts, one of said hinge butts being composed of two parts arranged and fitting snugly one within the other, each part of said butt having at one end a curved extension including top and bottom walls continuous with and extending angularly from.
the upper and lower edges of said extension, the adjacent top and bottom walls of said parts collectively forming thick pintle bearings, and the curved extension of the outer butt part being of greater length than the extension of the inner butt part.
11. A hinge comprising two hinge butts, one
