The present invention relates to improvements in holders for files and the primary object of the invention is to provide a holder which will facilitate use of the file. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder which will hold a file rigidly so that, with pressure applied to both ends, the file will not bend. Without' a rigid holder, the file ordinarily bends a little during use, and the teeth of the file are slightly cupped so that a firm hold on the material being filed is not obtainable. As a. result, the file becomes slick and prematurely useless.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. file holder having a reinforcing beam formed with an integral pocket construction for the accommodation of an end portion of the file.
A still further object is to provide a file holder which is adjustable to difierent sizes and lengths of files.
Yet another object of the invention resides in the provision of a file holder having improved means to securely clamp the file to the holder.
Otherobjects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification and in which drawing- Figures 1, 2 and 3 are views in top plan, side elevation and bottom plan, respectively, of the file holder and showing a file clamped thereto.
Figures 4 and 5 are vertical transverse sectional views substantially on the lines 44 and 5-5, respectively, of Figure 2.
In the drawing, which for the purpose of illustration shows only a preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the views, A designates a file of conventional 40 construction carried by the holder B.
As shown, the conventional form of file A is generally fiat and includes an intermediate portion ll! of uniform width and thickness, a tang extending from the opposite end of the inter 50 mediate portion I is also slightly convergent in width and thickness toward the front end I of the file. Suitable teeth |6-|'| may be formed in the sides and edge walls, respectively, of the file.
55 Referring now to the file holder B, the same comprises an elongate T-beam 20, providing a flange 2| constituting a reinforcing backing for the file, and a rib 22 strengthening the flange 2| so'as to prevent bending thereof. The width of the flange 2|, although uniform, is less than the Width of the file A, as shown in Figure, 1. At its forward end portion 23 the flange 2| is split to provide a pair of tabs 24, which are bent beneath the flange 2| so as to diverge toward their free ends 25. These free ends 25 are oppositely twisted so as to form with the flange 2| a pocket 26 defined by walls disposed in isosceles triangular relation to one another and in circumscribing relation to the rectangular cross-sectional outline of the forward end portion Id of thefile, when the same is disposed in the pocket 26.

Slidably mounted for movement longitudinally of the T-beam 2|! for co-action with the tang portion H of the file is a stock 33 provided with a T-sha-ped slot 34 which accommodates the which may be brought to bear against the rib 22, as shown in Figure 5. Extending rearwardly from the upper end 36 of the stock is an integral shank 33 including an upwardly ofiset portion 39 and carrying a rearwardly directed handle Ml of any suitable construction.
When the forward end M of the file is pressed into the pocket 26, it will fit snugly against the flat surface of the T-beam flange 2|. The stock as is-then moved forwardly along the beam to a position wherein the opposite sides of the stock engage the shoulders ll of the file. By threading the winged set screw 37 into engagement withthe rib 22, the tang portion H is drawn into close contact with the lower surface of the flange 2|, and the file is thus securely positioned symmetrically of the flange with the teeth ll of the opposite edges of the file' exposed in a manner so as to not interfere with the use of these teeth. When the stock 33 is jammed against the shoulders l2, the file is prevented from slipping backward and becoming loose while filing.
Various changes may be made in the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A file holder comprising an elongate beam including a strip-like flange providing a reinforcing backing for the file, said flange being longitudinally split at one end portion to provide a pair of tabs, said tabs being so bent beneath the flange as to diverge toward their free end portions said free end portions being oppositely twisted so as to provide a pocket substantially riangular in cross-sectional outline and proportioned to circumscribe one end portion of the file, and a clamp disposed at the other end of the flange for fixing the opposite end portion of the file to the flange.
2. In a holder for a file having a reduced end portion providing shoulders at opposite sides of the file, an elongate beam including a strip-like flange providing a reinforcing backing for the file, said beam including an end portion forming a pocket for the accommodation of that end portion of the file opposite said reduced end portion, and a clamp longitudinally slidably adjustable relative to the opposite end portion of the beam, said clamp being adapted to act upon the reduced end portion of the file and including side members disposed at opposite sides of the beam, said side members being arranged to engage the shoulders of the reduced end portion of the file with the opposite end portion of the file disposed in said pocket.
