5 Claims.
I This invention relates to adjustable electric light sockets andparticularly to that type in which the lamp socket is movably attached and Y electrically connected to a plug which in turn fits 5 a stationary socket; 3 1
It is the object of the present invention to provide a socketof this type which permits the lamp in the socket to assume all radialdirections of a hemisphere without the use of a universal orball joint. I I I I It. is a further object of the invention to obtain' a very large free space for the'conductors which join the plug members of the. device electrically to the'socket member sothat they are safely protected against injury and short circuits'. r
. With these and other objects in viewthe in- I vention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described,'claimed and illustrated in the ,accomj- .panying drawingv in which-#- Fig.1 is a front elevation of an incandescent I lamp, held in m new adjustable socket showin the plug being directed i 25 Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig."1.'-
held in ahorizontal socket.
terior details and connections. I F g. 5 is a'sectional plan View on the line 5-5 'ofFig. 1. j
Referring to the drawing ibis an Edison type of attachment plug'which is provided with an axial tubular extension I l. on its front face. This extension has a slot l2 close to its front end "which slot extends through the tubular Wall and more than 180 degrees around the periphery of 40 the tube. A.pi.n,l3 moves in the slot l2 through an arc of 180 degrees, being guided by the walls of the slot. Theinterior end of pin 13 is lodged in and fastened to an interior-guide ring M which closely fits intothehollow interior of tubular ex- 45 tension H The outer "end of extension H is provided with .two bosses l5 which are placed in transverse diametrical alignment and overlap the extension tube H. Bosses i5 carry connecting bars 16 by means of pivots I! and 18, the lat- 50 ter of which is provided with a clamping wing nut [9. The lower ends'oftbars lfi are rigidly fastened or may be integral with the upper end of lamp socket 2B so'thatthis socket may rotate about the a'xisb-bof Fig. 3form'ed' bypivots 65 ll-l8 and be clamped-in anyradial position have abundant space for free'movement in any I I the horizontal axis. Fig. 3 isairont elevation of the socket'similar to Fig. "1 but with the plug in position to be by nut IS on a semi-circular verticalplane. .TIhe wing nut l9 clamps the bars 56 to the outer periphery of the extension member it thus preventing movement of the socket in all planes; I
As the pin It with the interior or guide ring 5 M to which the lamp socket 29 is fastened by means of bars Iii, may turn through an arc of I 180 degrees in slot Hi, the socket 2i! and lamp 2| mayalso rotate simultaneously through that I angle about their common axis and thereby ashemisphere. -.Insulated'conductors Eli-23 which connect the plug It Withsocket 2t electrically,
portion. of the lamp socket as shown by Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, withoutjany danger-of injury.
.A particular advantage of this invention is the vfact that the motion on both axes of the device can be stopped by the handling of only the single nut H! which clampsthe interior guide ring 14 and tubular extension H to each other, prevent ing motion on the vertical axis and also clamps bars [,6 on pivots ll'l3, preventing motion; on
It'will be understood that modifications may be made in details of .construction without departing from the principle of the invention and it is desired to; be limited only by the state'of the 'prior art and the appended claims. v
I claim:
1; A flexible lamp support for incandescent lamps comprising a connection plug having aic'ap thereon, a tubular extension on said cap, 'a guide ring within said tubular extension rotatable. about the vertical axis of said plug, a pair ;of diametrically opposite pivots mounted on said ring, said tubular extension having a periph eral' slot, a pin fastened to said 'ring and guided in said. slot and a light socket having vertical 40 v arms thereon rotatably mounted by the pivots on'said ring. I I 2. An adjustable lamp support for incandescent lamps comprising a connection plug, a tubu- .lar member on said plug'torotate about the plug axis, a pair of pivots on said member in diametrical alignment on a plane perpendicular to the plug axis and an electric light socket rotatably supportedon said pivots to rotate simultaneousa 1y about the plug axis and an axis perpendicular thereto; I I 3. An adjustable lamp support for incandescent lamps comprising a connection plug, an electric lamp socket, a tubular'extension on the front face of said plug, a ring guided to rotate 2 within said tubular extension, a stop on said ring to limit its rotary motion and a pair of pivots on said ring forming an axis perpendicular to the plug axis and a bar rotatably mounted on each pivot atone end and rigidly fastened to said electric lamp socket at its other end.
4.'An adjustable lampsupport forincandescent lamps comprising a connection plug and an electric lamp socket connected to each other by means of a tubular member at the front end of said plug, said tubular member having a peripheral slot, an interior ring guided in said tubular member, a stop on saidlring adapted to engage the walls of said slot, a pair of blocks onthe outer end of the ring adapted to hold said ring to turn on a vertical aXia-apair of elongated flat in the tubular member and a pair of pivots in axial alignment to each other extending diar'netrically outward from said blocks and carryingior rotation thereon a pair of elongated flat bars fastened at their other ends to said lamp socketL 5. In an adjustable lamp support for incan v descent lamps comprising a connection plug, a lamp socket and members forming a joint there between, conductors passing through said joint, as tubular member rotatably connected to said p ug connecting bars conected to said socket to turn;
on a horizontal axis and a single clamping means U of said axes. MAURICE J. WOHL.
