FOLDABLE LAP TABLE Filed Feb. 7, 1959 fara Johnson INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Feb. 6, 1940 p FOLDABLEVLAP TABLE Maria Johnson, Saugertiea NjY. Application February 7, 1939, Serial No. 255,133
1 Claim; (01. 311-25) l a invention relates to lap tables, and its general object is to provide a foldable table of that character which includes a top section to rest upon the lap of the user, and a leg section having the top section pivotally connected thereto for foldable association therewith, as well as for cooperation with the users lap for supporting the table in a set up position, with the result it will be seen that when the table is in said position, the top is conveniently disposed with respect to the user, for any purpose, such as for writing, as shown in the drawing.
A further object is to provide a lap table that includes a foot rest for receiving the feetof the user, so that the table can be held steady and against undue movement when in use;
Another object is to provide a lap table including foldably connected leg and top sections, both of which are amply braced, yet the table is light in weight tofacilitate easy handling theree of, and the top section is held in a proper angular position with respect to the leg section when the table is set up for use. i
Astill furtherobject is to provide a foldable lap table that will take up minimum space when in folded position, and is simple in construction,
In describing the invention detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating my table in use.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof, in set up or unfolded position.
Figure 3 is a rear view partly in section of the table in set up position infull lines, and in folded position in dotted lines.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary top plan view with parts in section.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that my table includes only a pair of pivotally associated sections, namely a leg or supporting section I anda top section 2.
The leg section is in the form of a rectangular frame including a pair of parallel legs 3 having secured to their inner faces at the upper and lower ends thereof relatively short reinforcing strip members 4 that have their outer ends terminating flush with the outer ends of the legs and their inner ends are beveled as shown. Secured to and bridging the legs as well as the upper reinforcing members 4, slightly inwardly of the upper ends thereof 'is a cross member 5 which not only acts as a connecting means for the legs,
but performs another function with respect to the top section, which will be later described.-
Mounted and secured in openings extending transversely through the legs and the lower recrossed relation with each other and which have their ends secured to the legs adjacent to the upper and lower ends thereof, as best shown in Figure 3. g
The top section of my table likewise includes a frame 8,which in the form shown is square in shape and secured in the corners of the top frame are triangular shaped. reinforcing blocks 9 which together with the frame 8 have secured thereto a top H) of sheet material or the like.
Bridging the'frame 8 adjacent to one end thereof is a rod like bar II that extends beyond the frame to provide trunnions I! mounted for rotation in openings in the legs and the upper reinforcing members 4, for pivotally securing the top section to the leg section, as best shown in Figure 3. It will be further noted from Figure 3 that the topsection is of a size to snugly fit between the upper reinforcing members 4, so that when the table is folded, the top section is disposed flush with the leg section and therefore it will be obvious that the table will take up minimum space when in folded position. However, when the table is in setup or unfolded position as shown in Figure 1, the top section is disposed at right angles with respect to the leg section and is held against further movement beyond its right angled position by the under surface of the top section becoming engaged with the cross member 5. i
From the above description and disclosure in the drawing, it will be obvious that I have provided a foldable lap table including a top section to be supported on the lap of the user, and by the leg section, and is held accordingly against undue movementby the feet of the user resting upon the cross member 6, as clearly shown in Figure 1,
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is: n
A foldable lap table comprising a leg. section including a pair of parallel legs, reinforcing strips secured to the inner faces of said legs at the upper and lower ends thereof, upper and lower cross members bridging the legs and secured to the latter and the reinforcing stripsv respectively, crossed bracing members diagonally arranged with respect to the legs and secured thereto, a top member including a frame, corner blocks reinforcing the frame, a top secured to said frame, a rod like bar bridging the frame and extending beyond the same to provide trunnions rotatably mounted in the upper strips and legs for pivotal movement of the top section with respect to the leg section for foldable association thereof, said top section being engageable with the upper cross member for the latter to limit the movement of the top section with respect to the leg section when the table is in set up position, and the lower cross member providing a rest for the feet of the user to hold the table against undue movement when in use.
