IM PROVEMENT IN COM MODES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 21S,99, dated August 26, 1879 application filed lIuly 9, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM REED, of Westville, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Commodes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of referen ce marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a transverse vertical section of my improved commode, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof.

Corresponding parts in the two figures are denoted by similar letters of reference.

This invention appertains to certain improvements in portable commodes, the objects of which are togeffeetually prevent the escape of noxious odors and gases into the room, and to enable the same to be used as an ottoman when not used asacommode; and to these ends they consist in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and fully pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, A marks a case or box, preferably of a rectangular shape, and broader at the base than the top, which is divided into an upper and lower chamber by a perforated partition, c. Arranged immediately below this partition a is a drawer, B, which slides upon ways b, said ways being secured to the partition a'. The drawer B is provided with a suitable knob or handle for its manipulation. Any vsuitable disinfectant is placed within the drawer to neutralize the noxious odors arising from the evacuated matter within the vessel.

C marks a door, (hinged to the front of the case A,) which opens downwardly, and is provided with a springeatch, o, to hold it to the case A when closed. The object of this door is to permit of the placing of the vessel within or its removal from the upper chamber.

D is the seat, having an orifice usual to commode-seats, and having arranged immediately below it, upon suitable ways, a slide, d, the object of which is to prevent the efliuvia arising from the evacuated matter within the vessel escaping into the room. The upper side of the seat D is stuffed and upholstered, as is also the lid d1, which closes the orifice in the seat.

Fastened to the upper rear end of the case A is an upright or piece, d2, its top edge be-` ing on a line with or, when the under side of the top or cover E 1s stuffed, a little above) the top of the cushioned seat D. Hinged t'o the upright or piece cl2 is a top or cover, E,'of a size larger than the top of the case A, said top or cover being stuffed and upholstered on both sides and suitably trimmed with fringe, Src., to present the appearance, when resting on the seat, of an ottoman.

The top is held in an upright position by straps e, secured, one on each side, to the top and case, by which means the top or cover the seat. A pocket, c', for papers is made in the upholstering on the under side of the top E, immediately over the orifice in the seat.

It will be seen that when the top or cover is shut down upon the seat the upholstering on the under side of the top will closely lit the cushioned seatg' and effectually prevent the escape into the room of noxious odors from the contents of the vessel.

Av bail or handle is secured to thecase A, to

allow of the commode being carried from place I to place.

It will be observed that the fumes arising from the disinfectant placed in the drawer will pass through the perforations in the partition a and commingle with and neutralize the noxious odors from the contents of the vessel.

This commode can be manufactured 1n plain or costly manner, as desired.
