This invention relates to new and useful attachments to firearms and more particularly it pertains to a new and improved cheek rest for use-upon the stock of shotguns, rifles and similar small arms.

It is one object of the present invention to provide a device of the afore-mentioned character which will be simple in construction and of low cost to manufacture.

It is another object of the invention to provide a device of the aiore-mentioned character in which a cheek rest pad is so carried as to be readily removable with relation to a gun stock, thus rendering it possible to remove the pad entirely or to provide for interchanging of pads at will.

Still a further object of the invention resides in a novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby a minimum securing means will be sufiicient to secure the device in position upon a gun stock.

Still a further object of the invention resides in a novel construction whereby the butt plate of a gun stock is brought into use as the means,

by which the cheek rest is secured in position upon a gun stock. 7 Other objects of the inventionwill appear as the nature thereof is better understood and for this purpose, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings and the folowing specification and claims. In the drawings:

in each of the several illustrated forms of the invention, the cheek rest consists of a main body of any suitable material, such as fabric, rubher, leather or the like.

The body portion 24 is of sleevelike construction and tapers longitudinally in conformation to the shape of a gun stock of conventional form,

although it is to be understood, that the body portion may be specially constructed to fit gun stocks of special shapes, sizes or designs without departing fromthe intent of the invention.

Projecting from the rear endof the body por- ,tion 2 1', there are two wingextensions 26 which are of sufficient length to pass around the end of the gun stock when the cheek rest is in position thereon.

In all of the forms in which the invention is illustrated except that form illustrated in Figures 8 and 9, these wing extensions 26 are adapted to fold around the end of the gun stock to a sufficient degree to be clamped thereto by the butt plate 2! when the same is in its operative position upon the gun stock.

The cheek rest may be attached to a gunstock in the following manner: The stock may or may not be detached from the barrel or barrels of the gun as desired. In either event, thesleeve-like body portion 2Q is passed over the smaller or forward end of the stock and. along the stock until it reaches a position where it snugly fits the same. The butt plate 21 may be entirely removed or only loosened sufficiently to permit of the wing extensions 26 being folded around the end-of the gun stock in which position they are adapted to be clamped against the end face of the gun stock by the butt plate 2| when the screws 22 are tightened to secure the butt plate 2! in position upon the stock.

In that form of the invention illustrated in Figure 8 the wing extensions 26 are provided with lacing openings 28 to receive a lacing 30 and pull the wing extensions 25 around the butt plate of the gun stock as shown in said figure. In this form of the invention, the forward end of the body portion is provided with an opening 25 for the reception of a lacing not shown. When the lacing is drawn up, the forward end of the body portion will be contracted around the gun stock to act together with the lacing 3D heretofore mentioned, to secure the cheek rest In position on the stock 2!].

In connection with the cheek rest, I provide a pad. This pad is designated 30 and may be formed of any suitable soft, resilient material of which sponge rubber is one good example.

In that form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 through 4, the pad 30 is carried in a pocket 34 upon the outer face of the inside of the cheek rest. This pocket may be secured to the body portion 2 5 of the cheek rest by a suitable adhesive, or by a seam 32 as shown in the drawings and has its upper. edge 33 open in order that the pad 35 may be easily and convenientlyplaced within or removed from the pocket 31.

.In that form of the invention illustrated in a Figure 5, the pocket is designated 1-56 and consists of a member 3'1 sewn or otherwise secured to the inner faceof the inner wall of the body portion. The'upper edge 39 of the pocket is open in order that a pad similar to the pad 3B heretofore mentioned may be inserted into or removed from the pocket. I In Figures 8 and 9, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of pad securing means.

In the form illustrated in said Figures 8 and 9, the pad is designated it and may be of the same character as the pad 33 heretofore described.

In this modified form, the pad it is retained in a compartment M which is formed by permanently stitching-or otherwise securing a member 42 to the main body portion 2 3 of the cheek rest such as by stitching or the like 43, the securing means 63 passing entirely around the defining edge of the member 32 as illustrated in said figures. I

In Figures 6 and '7 the cheek rest does not employ any load but merely consists of thesleevelike body portion 2d and its wing extensions 25.

In Figures and 11 I have illustrated a still further modified form of the invention in which the main body portion 2 3 is open as at 519 along what constitutes its lower edge when it is in operating position. The adjacent edges of the open side of the body portion 26 are provided with openings 52 for the reception of a lacing element E i which is adapted to closethe open side and provide the means together with a single wing extension 26' upon either side of the gun stock for securing this form of the invention to the gun stock.

The invention has been illustrated and described in its preferred forms, but it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to those forms in which it has been shown, since the particular material and the fastening means in actual practice may vary as for instance, when fabric or leather is used, stitching means would be best suitable to fasten the several parts together, but when rubber is preferred to be used, it would be more suitable to use an adhesive means to secure the several parts together.

From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved cheek rest for gun stocks which may be manufactured in standard sizes for attachment to gun stocks of conventional types without requiring the modification of the gun stock to adapt it to the cheek rest. Furthermore, the invention provides a device which is simple in construction and may be applied without the services of a gunsmith or skilled mechanic.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

l. A check rest for the stocks of firearms comprising a gun stock embracing body portion, a cheek pad carried thereby and means engageable between the end of the gun stock and beneath the butt plate thereof for securing the stock embracing body portion against movement relatively to the gun stock.

2. A cheek rest for the stocks of firearms comprising a gun stock embracing body portion, a pocket in one of the sidewalls of the body portion, a pad removably carried in the pocket, and end members projecting from the gun stock embracing body portion andextending around the 1 stocks, said check rest including a sleeve-like member siidable along a gun stock to position thereon, an open pocket carried by'tne inner face of said sleeve-like member, a cheek pad removably mounted in said pocket, and means for securing the sleeve-like member against movement relatively to the gun stock, said securing means including side extensions of a length to project around the free end of the gun stock to a point between the gun stock and the buttplate carried thereby.

5. A cheek rest for attachment to firearm stocks, said cheek rest including a sleeve-like member slidable along a gun stock, a pair of wing extensions extending from the opposite sides of said sleeve member and means to engage the ends of said wing extensions between the end of the gun stock and beneath the butt plate thereof for securing the sleeve embracing member against movement relatively to the gun stock.

6. A cheek rest for attachment to firearm stocks, said check rest including a sleeve-like member slidable along a gun stock, a cheek pad adhered to the side face of said sleeve member, a pair of wing extensions extending from the opposite sides of said sleeve-like member and means to' secure the ends of said wing extensions between the end of the stock and beneath the butt plate thereof for securing the sleeve member against movement relatively to the gun stock.

7. A cheek rest for attachment to firearm stocks, said cheek rest including a sleeve-like member slidable along a gun stock, a pair of wing extensions extending to the rear end from the opposite sides of said sleeve member and means to engage the ends of said pair of wing extensions in between the end of the gun stock and beneath the butt plate thereof for securing the sleeve embracing member against movement relatively to the gun stock, said sleeve-like member having an opening to the forward end' and lacing for closing said opening and contract-l ing said forward end around the gun stock.
