- My invention relates to duplicating apparatus in which a hectograph pad secured removably in position on the face of a flat bed is provided with a design of typewritten matter or the like vformed in reverse thereon by the use o' copy ink, theapparatus comprising an impression roller or other suitable means for pressing copy sheets one at a time into engagement with the pad for transferringa small fractional portion of the ink to each of the copy sheets in turn for producing the printed matter or other design in positive thereon.
- My invention comprises improved means for securing the hectograph pad removably in position on the bed of the machine; improved means for insuring a ready application of the copy sheets successively in operative position on the bed of the machine; improved means for applying the required pressure on the face of the copy sheet for securing the desired impression thereon; and an improved form and arrangement of frame and carriage parts generally by which a strong construction shall be provided, capable of being used to advantage by operators having little mechanical knowledge or skill. My invention relates to duplicating apparatus in which a hectograph pad secured removably in position on the face of a flat bed is provided with a design of typewritten matter or the like vformed in reverse thereon by the use o' copy ink, theapparatus comprising an impression roller or other suitable means for pressing copy sheets one at a time into engagement with the pad for transferringa small fractional portion of the ink to each of the copy sheets in turn for producing the printed matter or other design in positive thereon.
My invention comprises improved means for securing the hectograph pad removably in position on the bed of the machine; improved means for insuring a ready application of the copy sheets successively in operative position on the bed of the machine; improved means for applying the required pressure on the face of the copy sheet for securing the desired impression thereon; and an improved form and arrangement of frame and carriage parts generally by which a strong construction shall be provided, capable of being used to advantage by operators having little mechanical knowledge or skill. It lis a further object of my invention to provide an arrangement of very simple construction from the standpoint of production and assembly of the parts, and one which can be produced easily on a commercial basis at a comparatively low cost of manufacture.
It is another object of my invention to improve apparatus oi this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. The preferred means by which I have accomplished my several obj ects are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my improved duplicating machine.

Referring now to the several figures ofthe drawings, in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference characters, l5 indicates the bed of my improved machine which in the arrangement shown is formed of sheet metal having downwardly turned flanges I6, ll, i8 and i9 at its side edges as is best indicated in Fig. 1. .In the arrangement shown, the bed I5 is reinforced at opposite sides by means of .3

In the arrangement shown, the bed is supported in position by supporting blocks 22 at opposite corners of the machine, the rear blocks 22 being i mounted upon arms 23 formed integrally with the flanges il and i9, and the supporting blocks 22 at the forward end oi the machine being supported by brackets 2li iixedly connected to the outer faces of the angle bars 2i? and 2l, as is clearly shown in said Fig. 4. In the preferred arrangement, the blocks 22 are made of rubber in the form of suction cups which serve to grip a table upon which the machine is placed.
As is Vclearly shown in Fig. 1, the angle bars 20 and 2l are provided at their ends with turned end portions 25 positioned'transversely with respect to the bars, such transversely disposed end portions having plates 26 connected therewith vfor rigidly mounting slide bars 2l and 28 in position along the sides of the machine, the bars 27 and 28 being mounted in parallel relation to each other and being disposed in slightly spaced relation to the outer edges of the angle bars Z and 2|. Upon the slide bars 2l and 28, I have provided slide blocks 29 and 30 respectively, which have a snug working fit on said bars so as to be readily shiftable back and forth along said bars. As is best shown in Fig. l, the bars` 21 and 28 are provided with buier blocks 3i, preferably of rubber, to serve as stops for limiting the movement of the slide blocks upon the bars.
The slide blocks 29 and 39, in the arrangement shown, are connected by means of a transversely disposed carriage 32 which is adapted to be moved longitudinally of the machine upon the slide bars 2l and 28. As is best shown in Fig. 5, the slide blocks 29 and Sil are of such length as to afford an effective bearing upon the slide4 bars so as to insure ready movement of the carriage upon the slide bars without any substantial tendency of the parts to bind upon the bars. In the arrangement shown, the carriage 32 comprises end frame members 33 and 34 formed of sheet metal in the form of housings, the lower edge portions of the end plates of such housings being connected by means of bolts with the slide blocks, as is best shown perhaps in Figs. 2 and 5. As is clearly shown in Fig. 4, the bolts 35 by which the slide block 28 is connected to the frame member 33 iit snugly in the openings in the wall portion so as to hold the slide block 29 rigidly in position. The bolts 35 by which the slide block 30 is connected with the end frame member 34, however, have a loose i'it in the openings through the end wall of the housing member 34 so as to provide for a limited amount of play between the slide block 38 and the housing member 34, the bolts 35 being provided with enlarged shoulders for insuring the loose connection of the parts.
The carriage 32 comprises further a transversely disposed plate 35 which is provided at its forward edge with a downwardly turned iiange portion 31 and is providedv at its ends with upwardly turned end portions 33, as is best shown in Fig. 5. The downwardly turned flange 3l extends between the upwardly turned end portions 38 of the plate, as is best shown in Fig. 3, such end portions projecting into the housing members 33 and 34 where they are rigidly secured by welding or otherwise for securely connecting the` end housing portions with the transverse plate portion 36. The plate 3G is further connected with the end housing members by means of angle bars 39 secured by welding or in any other suitable manner to the upwardly extending plate portions 38 and to the upper wall portions of the housing members 33 and 34 (see Fig. 4).
By the use of my improved construction as above described, the carriage 32 is made very strong while being comparatively light in weight and is very readily shiftable along the bars 2l and 2B as may be desired in the use of the machine.
The carriage 32 comprises further a transversely extending bar or bracket 4B which in the arrangement shown is formed by casting in the shape of a yoke comprising heavy downwardly extending arms 4l and 42, as is best shown in Fig. 4. The downwardly extending arms 4l and 42, in turn, are provided with forwardly extending arms 43 and 44, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. The bracket as a whole ismovably mounted in position by means of bolts 45 extending through the arms 43 and 44 and through the upwardly extending plate portions 38 of the transverse plate 36, as is best shown in Fig. 3, the arrangement being such that the bracket is adapted to swing easily about the axis of the bolts which are mounted in alignment with each other. Between the downwardly extending arms 4I and 42 of the bracket, I have rotatably mounted an impression roller 4B by the use of any suitable means by which the roller is enabled to have the desired rotary movement. At its ends, the bracket 4l] is pro-vided with outwardly extending pins or lugs 41 which are connected by means of coiled springs 48 with lugs 49 struck from the transverse plate 35, the arrangement being such that the springs 48 no1'- mally hold the bracket 40 turned into the position as shown in Fig. 5, with the roller 45 in raised position with respect to the bed plate 36.
The means for mounting a hectograph pad in position upon the machine comprises a retainer strip 5U which is secured in position upon the bottom face of the bed plate l5 by welding or in any other suitable manner. As is clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 10, the retainer strip 50 is provided with a downwardly turned end portion 5l, and with outwardly extending lugs 52 along its sides, the lugs 52 being offset downwardly with respect to the strip, as is best shown in Fig. 9. A slide plate 53 is slidably mounted in position upon the bottom face of the bed plate I5 by means of the retaining strip 5G, such plate 53 being provided with a slot 54 therein of slightly greater width than that of the strip 50, being provided with notches 55 adapted to be entered over the lugs 52 for the assembly of the parts into the position as shown in Figs. '7 and 8, so that the plate 53 is supported in position directly upon the lugs 52 as shown in Fig. 9. At its rear end, the plate 53 is provided with a downwardly turned iiange 56, and a coiled spring 5l is interposed between said flange 56 and the turned end portion 5I of the retainer strip 5E), such spring 5l serving at all times to urge the plate 53 forwardly toward the right in Figs. 7 and 8.
Means is provided for moving the plate 53 toward the left in Figs. '7 and 8 against the action of the spring 51. Such means comprises a cam 58 pivotally mounted upon a bolt 59 mounted in the bed plate I5 and extending through the slot 54, such cam being of appreciably greater length than width, as is clearly shown in Fig. 8. A handle 50 is provided on the cam 58 for turning the cam from the position as shown in solid 'I lines in Fig. 8 to the position as shown in dotted lines, the arrangement being such that the engagement o1 the end of the cam with the plate 56 serves effectively for holding the cam in its longitudinal position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8 when it is swung from the transverse position as shown in solid lines in said ligure.
The machine as above described is designed for use in connection with a hectograph pad 6l of well-known standard form as is best shown in Fig. 12, such pad comprising a strip of fabric 62 covered on one face with a .layer of gelatin 63 of any approved type. At its ends, the fabric 62 is provided with openings 54 therein in spaced relation transversely of the sheet, a hook member 65 formed of sheet metal bent into shape being mounted upon the end of the fabric closely adjacent to the openings S4. The rear edge portionof the bed plate I5 is arranged for cooperation with the pad 6i, being provided with upwardly extending tongues '$6 in spaced relation thereacross corresponding to the-position of the 'openings Sli-fin the pad.
In the arrangement shown, the tongues' arestruck from the metal -of the flange i8, such tongues i'having upwardbeing inserted over the tongues 66 so as to permit the hook `member S5 t0 be engaged vabout the bottom edge of the flange I6 of the bed plate.
At the forward end of the machine, at the right in Figs. l'and 8, the ange I8 is provided with a series of slots 61 through which extend tongues A58 formed on the front edge of the plate 53, such slots serving as a guide for the plate 53 as it is moved back and forth with respect to the bed plate. The arrangement of the parts is such that when the lever stands in the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8 so as to hold the plate 53 in the dotted line position, a hectograph pad 6| having its rear edge connected with the flange i6 as shown in Fig. 7 is capable of having the hook member on its opposite end portion brought readily into engagement with the ends of the tongues 68. The arrangement is such that when the lever 6B is swungagain into the position as shown in solid lines in Fig. 8 the spring 51 moves the plate 53 into position for tightening the pad 6l upon the bed plate as shown in said Fig. 7. Across the carriage 32 opposite the impres-sion roller d6, I have providedfa guard plate 69 which is attached at its ends to the housing members 33 and 34. serving thus bo-th as a guard and as a transverse strengthening member. g
At about the middle portion of the yoke -comprising the crossbar 40, I have provided a. pressure plate 'lll which in the arrangement shown is formed integrally with the bar 4U, being obliquely disposed, as is best shown in Fig. 5, so as to be in convenient position for the application of pressure downwardly and forwardly thereon.
Upon the transversely extending plate 36- of the carriage 32, I have provided paper guide de- Vvices 'H and 'i2 which are adjustable transversely of the machine to accommodate different 4widths of copy sheets to be employed on the machine. [In the arrangement shown, the guide plates 1I and 'l2 are mounted in position by means of bolts 13 extending thro-ugh openings in the members 'il and 12 and V-through slots 14 extending across the machine longitudinally of the downwardly extending ange 31 of the plate 36. f

The extreme forward end of thesheet is preferably left out of engagement with the pad so as to enable the operator to grasp the sheet readily vfor .stripping it from the pad 5| after the carriage 32 has been returned to the extreme left into the position as shown in Fig.'5. The mechanism is then ready for the insertion of a `new cop-y sheet and a repetition of the operation as above described.
By the use of my improved construction, I have provided a machine which is very simple in. operation and which can be employed very conveniently, one which can be produced easily and cheaply upon a commercial basis, and one which is highly eiective in use. It is -to be understood that I prefer to employ the form and arrangement as shown in ther drawingsfand as abo-ve described, but that the invention is not to be limited to such form and arrangement except so far as the claims may be so limited, the construction being susceptible to changes without departing from my invention.
I claim:
1. YIn a duplicating apparatus, the combina.- tion of a flat bed, means for securing a 'hectograph pad removably in position on saidbed, slide bars secured in parallel relation to each other along opposite sides of said bed, supportling blocks slidably mounted on said bars, a carriage extending across said bed and supported at opposite sides of the machine by said blocks, a roller rotatably mounted on said carriage and movable thereon into and out of operative impression relationship to a hectograph pad on said bed, yielding means adapted normally to hold the roller out of operative position with respect to said hectograph pad, means` movably mounted on said carriage adapted by pressure downwardly and forwardly thereon to cause saidfroller to press against said pad and to move longitudinally of the machine over the face of the 'pad and resilient means engaging the forward end of said hectograph pad to tension the same and to takeup any slack caused in the pad by said downward and forward pressure'on said roller.
l 2. Ina duplicating apparatus, the combination of a flat bed, means for securing Aa hectograph pad removably in position on said bed, slide bars secured in parallell relation to each other along opposite sides of said bed., supporting blocks having a snug sliding fit on said bars,
a carriage extending across said bed having 'a rigidk connection with the supporting block at one side and a loose connection with the supporting block at the oppositeside for permitting said carriage to have free movement along said `bars,.a single roller rotatably mounted on said carriage and movable thereon into and out of operative relation to a hectograph pad on said bed, yielding means adapted normally to hold the roller out of operative position with respect'to said hectograph pad, and meansior pressing said roller downwardly and for moving it forwardly along the pad, comprising an arm extending upwardly from the roller and a pressure vplate in oblique position on said arm for convenient application of pressure downwardly and forwardly thereon.
3. In a duplicating apparatus, the combination ably mountedon said bars, a carriage extending ii il across said bed and supported at opposite sides of the machine by said blocks, a bracket substantially in the form of a yoke having downwardly disposed arms at its end portions, a single roller rotatably mounted between said downwardly extending arms, other arms extending forwardly and pivotally connected with said carriage in front of the roller so as to enable the roller to move into and out of impression relationship to a, hectograph pad on said bed, yielding means adapted normally to hold said bracket in position with the roller out of operative position with respect to the hectograph pad so that a copy sheet may be manually positioned on said pad beneath said roller, and p-ressure means on said bracket for applying pressure downwardly and forwardly thereon for movingy the roller downwardly against the action of said yielding means and for moving the carriage and its connected parts forwardly over the face of the pad.
4. In a duplicating apparatus, the combination of a at bed, means for seciuing a hectograph pad removably in position on said bed, slide bars secured in parallel relation to each other along opposite sides of said bed, supporting blocks having a snug sliding t on said bars, frame members connected with said slide blocks respectively, a transverse plate rigidly connected with said frame members, a yoke pivotally mounted on said transverse plate so as to swing about a transverse axis with respect thereto, a single roller rotatably mounted on said yoke so as to be movable into and out of operative pressure relation to said pad, a spring normally holding said roller` out of operative relation to said pad, pressure means on said yoke for applying pressure downwardly and forwardly thereon for moving the roller downwardly against the action of said spring and for moving the yoke forwardly with respect to said pad and margin stop means located at the rear end of said bed against which a copy sheet may be positioned before pressure is aplied to said yoke by the manual insertion thereof between said hectograph pad and said single roller.
5. In a duplicating apparatus, the combination of a bed in the form of a sheet metal plate having downwardly turned anges about its edges, angle bars fixedly connected with the side flanges of the bed plate for reinforcing the plate, slide bars secured to said angle bars in outwardly spaced relation thereto along the sides of the bed, supporting blocks having a snug sliding fit on said slide bars, frame members in the form of housings pressed from sheet metal and connected with said slide blocks, a transverse plate extending at its ends into said housings and rigidly connected therewith in spaced relation to the end walls of the housings, a roller rotatably mounted on said transverse plate so as to be movable toward and from the bed plate thereon, springs operatively connected with said roller within said housings adapted normally to hold the roller out of operative position with respect to said bed plate, and pressure means operatively connected with said roller for forcing the roller` downwardly and forwardly along said slide bars.
6. In a duplicating apparatus, the combination of a flat bed, slide bars secured in parallel relation to each other along opposite sides of said bed, a carriage transversely mounted for longitudinal movement on said slide bars, a roller pivotally mounted on said carriage and movable into and out of operative impression relationship to a hectograph pad on said bed, resilient means for holding said roller normally out of operative position with respect to said pad, a pressure plate mounted in oblique position on said carriage for the application of downward and forward pressure to said roller, means for securing one end of a .hectograph pad removably to said bed, and means for securing the other end of said hectograph pad to the forward end portion of said bed, comprising a plate slidably mounted on said bed and arranged for hooked engagement with said pad so as to tighten the pad by movement longitudinally of the bed, yielding means adapted normally to urge said plate in the direction for tightening the pad to take up any elongation of said pad vcaused by the application of pressure to said pressure plate, and cam means movably mounted on said bed adapted upon an operative stroke to move said plate against the action of said yielding means to such position as to permit said pad readily to be released from the plate and arranged so as to normally by its engagement with cooperating parts to be held against reverse movement and serving thus normally to hold the plate from movement again to position for tightening the pad.
7. In a` duplicating apparatus, the combination of a at bed, slide bars secured in parallel relation to each otheralong opposite sides of said bed, supporting blocks slidably mounted on said bars, a carriage extending across said bed and supported at opposite sides by said blocks, said carriage including frame members in the form of housings enclosing said supporting blocks and extending below the upper ksurface of said bed, means for securing one end of a hectograph pad removably to said bed, and means for securing the other end of said hectograph pad to the other end portion of said bed, comprising a plate slidably mounted on said bed and arranged for hooked engagement with said pad so as to tighten the pad by movement longitudinally of the bed, yielding means adapted normally to urge said plate in the direction for tightening the pad, an operating member movably mounted on said bed adapted in its inoperative position to permit said yielding means to hold said pad in tightened condition and adapted by movement into a predetermined operative position to move said plate in the direction for loosening said pad, and a handle on said operating member for moving said member into and out of operative posiy tion and extending from said operating member longitudinally beyond the end of said bed, the arrangement being such that said operating member normally is held by its engagement with cooperating parts against movement from its operative position so as toy expedite connection of said pad with said plate.
8. In a duplicating apparatus, the combination of a fiat bed, a carriage transversely mounted on said bed for longitudinal movement thereof, means for securing one end of a hectograph pad removably to one end of said bed, a retainer strip xedly mounted on the bottom face of said bed at its opposite end portion having lugs projecting from its sides in slightly spaced relation to the face of the bed, a slide plate having a slot therein adapted to have a working t on said retainer strip between the lugs and the bed plate and having notches in the sides of the slot adapted to permit said lugs to pass for assembly of the parts, means for connecting the forward edge of said plate removably with said pad, yielding means adapted normally to move said plate in the direction for tightening said pad,la
cam having substantially greater eiective length than width pivotally mounted on said bed plate by means extending through the slot in said plate and arranged so that when in transverse position with respect to the bed it permits said yielding means to hold the pad in tightened condition and so that when moved into longitudinal position with respect to the bed it moves said plate in the direction for loosening said pad, and a lever connected with said cam for operation of the cam and extending from said cam longitudinally beyond the end of said bed, said cam being normally held by its engagement with cooperating parts against movement from its longitudinal position so as to expedite connection of said pad with said plate.
9. A carriage for a at bed type of duplicating apparatus having slide bars mounted along the sides thereof, comprising a supporting block for cooperation with each of said slide bars, a frame member in the form of a housing associated with each of said supporting blocks and forming end walls and marginal side walls for said carriage, a transversely extending plate disposed between said frame members and having upwardly bent ends, the edges of said ends meeting said marginal side walls and being aixed thereto whereby said upwardly bent ends form interior walls of said housings within which said supporting blocks are positioned, a bracket in the form of a yoke having arms at its end portions, said arms being pivoted on each of said upwardly bent ends within said housing, a roller journalled in said arms and positioned rearwardly of said bent up ends, resilient means positioned in one of said housings to maintain said roller in elevated position, and means associ-` ated with said bracket and positioned between said housings for manual depression of said roller in opposition to the action of said resilient means, said transversely extending plate being disposed forwardly of said roller andv sloping downwardly toward said roller to form a copy sheet support whereby the space above said copy sheet support is entirely protected by said-hous ings from said arms, said supporting blocks and said resilient means.
