Edwin' Patented Jan. 30, 1940 PANEL Edwin T. Todd, Grand Rapids, Mich., assigner to American Seating Company, Grand Rapids,I
Mich., a corporation of New Jersey Application March 10,
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to panels and more particularly to upholstered panels, the construction herein shown and described being in the nature of a modification of that shown in application for patent filed March 10, 1938, by Henry P. Nordmark, Serial No. 195,013, and by him ass-igned to my assignee.
The primary object of the instant invention is to provide novel means for detachably securing an upholstered covering to a chair back, chair seat or other panel whereby old and worn cov-` erings may bereplaced with new ones from time to time.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure l is a fragmentary cross-sectional View of a back rest for a chair and on line I-I of Figure 2, it being understood of course that coverings may be similarly secured to chair seats, panels or the like;
Figure 2 is a fragmentaryV rear elevational View of the chair back;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the blank from `which the fastening member is formed;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the fastening member formed from the blank shown in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a crosssectional view of the fastening member on line 5-5 of Figure 4; and
Figure E6 is a cross sectional view thereof on line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Referring then to the drawing wherein like parts of thevconstruction shown are designated by the same numerals in the several views, a panel I0 here shown as of stamped sheet metal and used as a member in the fabrication of a back rest for a chair, is provided with an arcuate marginal groove I I adjacent its edge onthe back surface thereof which groove is cross-sectionally greater than n semi-circular.
Hair I2 or other suitable padding is preferably disposed over the front surface of the groovedr able member I5 here shown as having oppositely disposed teeth I 6 and preferably formed from stamped sheet metal from the blank shown in An elongated arcuate cross-sectionally spring- 1938, Serial No. 194,989
Figure 3 into'the form shown in Figure 4 is disposed over the border of the upholstered sheet i4 'and is sprung into the -groove I I between the walls thereof for detachably securing` the stretched sheet I4 over v,the front surface of the panel I0 and its padding I2. As best seen in Figure 2, therelatively narrow portions vconp necting the toothed portions of the springable y members I5 are bendable to thus permit ready insertion of the members I5 in the curved portions of the groove Il. r
It will thus be seen that novel means are herein'shown and described'for-detachably securing an upholstered covering to a chair back, chair seat or other panel andwhile but one `specie 'embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain 'details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention `as the same is defined by the following'claims.`
1. A panel having a marginal groove crosssectionally arcuate-and greater than semi-circular, a sheet disposed over a surface of the panel, and an `elongated member comprising cross-secticnally arcuate and springable toothed portions connected' by relatively narrow bendable portions, said elongatedmember being disposed overthe sheet and sprung into the groove between the ywalls thereof.
2.v A panelhaving a marginal groove crosssectionally arcuate and greater than semi-circular, a sheetr disposed over a surface' of the panel, and an Lelongated member comprising cross-sectionally greater than semi-circular arcuate and springable toothed portions connected by relatively narrow bendable portions, said elongated member being disposed over the sheet and sprung into the groove between the walls thereof. l
3. Al panel having a longitudinally curved marginal groove cross-sectionally arcuate vand greater than semi-circular, asheet disposed over the surface of the panel, and an elongated member comprising cross-sectionally .arcuate f and springable toothedportions connected by relatively narrow portions bendable to accommodate the elongated member to the longitudinal curve of the marginalv groove, said elongated member being disposed over the sheet and sprung into the groove between the walls thereof.
