Description

Jan. 2. 1940. e. MEITNER i SHARPENING DEVICE FUR RAZOR BLADES Filed om. 26, 1936 Patented Jan. 2, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application october ze, 193s, serial No. 107,633
In France December 5, 1935 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a device for sharpening razor blades.
The device according to the invention can be produced in a simple manner at low cost, does not operate irregularly in the course of time, and the parts thereof do not wear off. Furthermore, the mode of operation of the device is safe and reliable.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention an electromagnet having a stationary core is provided, one pole of which serves for holding the blade to be sharpened whilst the other pole thereof is flexibly and magnetically connected with two carriers for the sharpening means, which are oppositely disposed on both sides of the rst pole.
By way of example, one form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of the 1 device and Fig. 2 a top view thereof with the cover removed.
Referring to the drawing, in a casing 2 closable by a cover I an electromagnet is provided which substantially comprises a coil 3, a stationary core 4 and angle irons 5. The stationary core Lcomprises two pairs of U-shaped angle irons 6 and 1 having branches of diierent length. The angle irons 6 are arranged so as to have their long branches lie closely to each other, and the angle irons I are so inserted in the angle irons 6 that the long sides thereof extend along the long sides of the angle irons 6. A pin 8 firmly connects the long sides of the angle irons 6 and I which are further secured to the bottom of the casing 2 by the screws 9. The coil 3 is placed over the long branches of the angle irons 6, 'I so as to leave a space between the coil 3 and the short sides of the irons.
Between the short branches of the angle irons 6, 'I a spring plate I0 is clamped and held in po# sition by the screws II which pass through the angle irons and the spring plate. The two spring plates IU are arranged at a distance from the coil 3 and extend vertically upwards. -At a slight distance from the upper edges of the short branches of the angle irons 6, 1 the angle irons 5 and the clamping bars I2 are secured to the upper portions of the spring plates I0 by means of the pins I3 passing through them, the angle irons 5 being so arranged that one branch thereof extends approximately horizontally at a distance above the coil 3 and symmetrically to the core 4 which projects on top from the coil 3. To the angle irons 5 sharpening means I4 are symmetrically and at a distance from the top of the core 4 secured by the screws I5. The blade I6 to be sharpened is attached to the pins II provided on top of the core 4 in such manner that the cutting edges I8 thereof are adjacent to the correspondingly sloped surfaces I9 of the sharpening means I4.
The coil 3 is suitably connected toa Acurrent source or electric supply line, for instance by means of the terminals 20. The device is preferably operated by alternating current. The core 4 and the angle irons 5 form the two poles of the electromagnet and are magnetically connected. Excitation of the coil 3 by alternating vcurrent causes oscillation of the angle irons 5, so that the sharpening means I4, I9 carry out a swinging motion for sharpening the blade I6 pressed against them. Owingto magnetic eifect, the blade I6 is kept in necessary contact with, the sharpening means I4, I9, so that a special device for producing bearing'pressure can bedispensed with.
The devicecan be operated also with continuous current, in which case a suitable circuit breaker must be provided for periodically interrupting and closing the circuit.
I claim: y
A razor blade sharpener comprising a stationary coil .having a vertical core extending above the plane thereof, `paired angle plates having their horizontal arms fixed to the core and their vertical arms disposed upon opposite sides of the coil, a pair of upper angle plates having their horizontal arms overhanging the coil, spring plates having their lower ends :dxed between the vertical arms of the lower plates, means for ixing the upper end of the spring plates to the vertical arms of the upper angle plates, the opposed ends of the upper and lower angle plates being spaced to permit free flexing of the spring plates intermediate their ends, blade honing heads xed to the horizontal arms of the upper plates, means for fixing a blade to the core for contact with the heads, as and for the purpose set forth.
