In connection with corrugating rolls such as are used in the manufacture of corrugated paper, it has long been the practice to use guide members to assist in separating the corrugated web from one of the corrugating rolls, and also to hold the web properly in position in the flutes of the succeeding corrugating roll as the Web passes partially around the latter. It is necessary from time to time to adjust or correct the position of these guide members in order to. keep them spaced the proper distance from the periphery of the corrugating roll under difierent operating conditions, and it may also be necessary (usually only infrequently) to make an adjustment of a somewhat different character to reposition the guide members so that the arcuate curvatures of their web-guiding surfaces conform accurately to the periphery of the adjacent corrugating roll. 7
The present invention relates particularly to the adjustment of guide members of the above character, and aims to provide such an adjustment wherein the spacing of the guide members with respect to the corrugating roll may be readily adjusted while the machine is running, and without affecting the conformity of the arcuate guiding surfaces of the guide members to the periphery of the corrugating roll, an additional adjustment being provided to enable the curvature of the guide members to be so conformed whenever this kind of adjustment is necessary. The two kinds of adjustment are segregated so to speak in such manner that correction of the spacing of the guide members does not disturb the conformity of the curvatures of the guide members to the adjacent roll, this latter type of adjustment being made separately if and when needed. Further objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious and in part specifically pointed out in the description hereinafter contained which, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred form of guide member construction adapted to operate in accordance with the invention; such disclosure however should be regarded as merely illustrative of the principles of the invention in its broader aspects. In the drawing Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section showing the main parts of a corrugating machine with which the present invention is more directly concerned.

The invention is disclosed as applied to a corrugating machine of known type as to many of its features of construction and mode of operation and since this, as well as other corrugating machine constructions suitable for the purpose, are well known in the art, only the particular parts of the machine will be referred to with which the present invention is more directly 10 concerned. I have shown in the drawing a 'pair of meshing corrugating rolls l and 2 which will be understood as heated in suitable manner and supported and driven as is known in the art.

In the illustrated form of the invention we pro- 35 vide further guide members l0 having arcuate guiding surfaces II similar in character to the guiding surfaces 9 above referred to, and extending further around-the periphery of roll '2 to hold the corrugated web properly in the flutes of the roll until after adhesive has been applied to the peaks of the corrugated web by roll 5. The guide members above described may be supported ultimately by a fixed cross-piece l2, and by main supporting members shown in the form of fittings l3 attached to cross-piece 52 by bolts I4. In accordance with the present invention we provide in conjunction with the main guide supporting members l3, auxiliary supporting members I5 which are confined to movement toward and from corrugating roll 2, in such manner that adjustment of these members toward and from the roll alters the spacing of the webguiding surfaces 9 and II with respect to the pe- 5 riphery of roll 2, without afiecting the conformity of the arcuate curvatures of these guiding surfaces to the periphery of the roll.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention these auxiliary supporting members l5 take the form of rectangular blocks slidable in grooves IS in fittings l3. Suitable clamping devices such as bolts ll, act between members l3 and I 5 to hold the latter adjustably in position. As shown the bolts H are seated in recesses I8 in fittings l3 and the blocks 15 are provided with elongated slots l9 which surround bolts l1, and the bolts I I also releasably clamp guide members 6 and If) to the auxiliary supporting members l5, the guide members being provided with elongated slots 26 and 2t surrounding bolts l7 and similar to slots l9 above referred to. Washers 22 may be interposed between bolts I1 and the guide members. Thus when a bolt ll is released, the auxiliary supporting member l5 and also the guide members 6 and I!) may be moved toward or from roll 2 until the arcuate guiding surfaces 9 and H are spaced the desired distance from the periphery of roll 2, and this adjustment will not affect the conformity of the curvatures of such guiding surfaces to that of the roll.
In order to afford adjustment of the curvatures of guiding surfaces 9 and H with respect to roll 2 or adjustment of the guide members ii and m relative to each other, we provide further releasable clamping devices such as bolts 23 which act between the guide members and the auxiliary supporting members 15. As shown the bolts 23 are bottomed in holes 24 in blocks 15, the bolts 23 being free of the main supporting members [3, and passing through holes 25 and 26 respectively in guide members 6 and I0, these holes 25 and 26 being somewhat larger than the portions of the bolts which they surround to allow angular or rocking movement of either or both of guide members 6 and [B when bolts 23 are released. Washers 21 may be interposed between the heads of bolts 23 and the adjacent guide members.
Thus when bolts H and 23 are in clamping position the guide members 61 and I are held fixedly in position. When one of the bolts I7 is loosened up, the accompanying bolt 23 being still tight, the corresponding guide members 6 and it are released for conjoint adjustment to alter the spacing between their arcuate guide surfaces and the periphery of roll 2, the corresponding bolt 23 partaking in this movement, but the parts being restrained against any rocking movements which would alter the conformity of the curvatures of guiding surfaces 9 and II with respect to the periphery of roll 2. An adjustment of this character may be readily made while the machine is running.
If the curvatures of either or both of the guiding surfaces 9 and H have somehow gotten out of conformity with the periphery of roll 2, correction may be made by loosening up the corresponding bolt 23 and also loosening up to some extent the corresponding bolt l1. Either the corresponding guide member 6 or the guide member ID or both may then be rocked or tilted until the curvatures of their guiding surfaces 9 and H conform properly to each other and to the periphery of roll 2, after which the corresponding bolt I? will be again tightened up. The corresponding bolt 23 may then be tightened up, any necessary adjustment for spacing being made before this is done. I
As one feature of the invention in a specific aspect, we prefer to construct the guide members 6 and ID as separate pieces. The roll I is heated and tends to distort the stripper fingers 1 somewhat during temperature changes, while roll is not correspondingly heated so that the guiding surfaces H which will usually engage in peripheral groove 29 in roll 5, should not shift in position lengthwise of the roll correspondingly with stripper fingers 1. Forming the guide members 6 and H) as separate pieces will enable the stripper fingers I to accommodate themselves to temperature changes in roll I without distorting guide members ID in respect to their adjacent rolls.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been described it should be understood that changes may be made therein without departing from the invention in its broader aspects, within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A guide construction for corrugating machines including a corrugating roll, a main supporting member, an auxiliary supporting. member, means interengaging between said supporting members mounting said auxiliary supporting member for linear movement toward and from said corrugating roll, a guide member extending from said auxiliary supporting member and having an arcuate guiding surface adjacent said corrugating roll, a releasable clamping device normally exerting pressure on the guide member and the auxiliary supporting member to hold them both in fixed relation to the main supporting member, a second clamping device acting between said auxiliary supporting member and guide member but free of the main supporting member, said clamping devices being constructed and ar ranged to afford linear adjustment of the auxiliary supporting member and guide member to ward and from the corrugating roll when the first mentioned clamping device is released and the second mentioned clamping device is in clamping position, and to afford rocking adjustment of the guide member with respect to the auxiliary supporting member and corrugating roll" when both of said clamping devices are released.
2. A guide construction for corrugating machines including a first corrugating roll having a circumferential groove therein, a second corrugating roll,'a main supporting member, an auxiliary supporting member, means interengaging between said supporting members mounting the auxiliary supporting member for movement toward and from said corrugating rolls, a guide member extending from said auxiliary supporting member having a finger portion extending into said groove of the first mentioned corrugating roll, and an arcuate guiding surface adjacent said second corrugating roll, a second guide member also extending from said auxiliary supporting member and having an arcuate guiding surface adjacent the second corrugating roll, a releasable clamping device acting between both of said guide members and said auxiliary supporting member and normally holding the guide members in fixed relation to the auxiliary supporting member, said clamping device and guide members being constructed and arranged to afiord rocking movement of the guide members with respect to each other and said corrugating roll when said clamping device is released, and a second releasable clamping device acting between said main and auxiliary supporting members to afford adjustment of the auxiliary supporting member and guide members toward and from said corrugating rolls while said first mentioned clamping device is in clamping position. i

A guide construction for corrugating machines including a first corrugating roll, a second corrugating roll, a main supporting member, an auxiliary supporting member, means mounting said auxiliary supporting member upon said main supporting member for linear movement toward and from said corrugating rolls, a guide member having a finger portion extending into the groove of said first corrugating roll, and also having an arcuate guiding surface adjacent said second ccrrugating roll, a second guide member also having an arcuate guiding surface adjacent said second corrugating roll, a releasable clamping device acting between both of said supporting members and guide members, said clamping device being constructed and arranged to afford linear adjustment of the auxiliary supporting member and guide members when released, a second clamping bolt acting between both of said guide members and said auxiliarysupporting member, but free of said main supporting member, said second mentioned clamping bolt being constructed and arranged to afford rocking movement of the guide members with respect to each other and the corrugating rolls when released, whereby linear adjustment of the guide members may be made while said first mentioned clamping bolt is released and the second mentioned bolt is in clamping position and rocking adjustments ofsaidguide members may be made when both of said clamping bolts are released.

A guide construction for, corrugating machines including a corrugating roll, a main supporting member, an auxiliary supporting member mounted upon said main supporting member for movement towardand from said corr'ugatingroll, a guide member extending from said auxiliary supporting member and having an arcuate guiding surface adjacent said corrugating roll, a clampingbolt passing through said guide memher and auxiliary supporting member and bettoming in 'saidmain supporting member, said guide member and auxiliarysupporting member being slidable toward and from the corrugating roll with respect to said bolt when the latter is released, and a second clamping bolt passing through said guide member and bottoming in said auxiliary supporting member but free of the main supporting member, the aforesaid construction being constructed and arranged to afford
