Claims.
This invention relates to shoe machinery and more particularly to improvements in dies for use in ornamenting shoe uppers and shoe parts by the formation of cutouts or perforations in-por- Serial No. 90,427, filed Julv 13, 1936, which dies are especially designed for use in the type of machine described and claimed in co-pendfng cases of Benjamin W. Freeman, Serial No. 83,796, filed June 5, 1936, and Benjamin W. Freeman et al.,

With many types of work, the pressure requirements for ornamenting and for stripping are very heavy and the machines described in said applications are particularly designed to meet such requirements, particularly with relation to the stripping of the work from the die.
Conventional strippers include some mechanism directly associated with the die unit, e. g., a stripper plate mounted on springs which serve normally to maintain the plate in a position slightly in advance of the cutting edges of the die. The spring pressure must be so adjusted as to accommodate varying thicknesses of leather or material upon which the die is working, and dimculties arise in this connection, especially when marking edges are,placed on the stripper. Thus if the spring pressure is adjusted to mark and properly strip a light piece of calf skin, it would probably injure a heavy piece of leather. Obviously, when the material is thick the stripper will be depressed more by the material, than would be the case with thin leather.
Varying pressures are required with different characters of leather as well as with difierent thicknesses,and as the number of cutouts or perforations in a piece of work is increased, the need for greater pressure likewise increases and such pressures are very difiicult of attainment, if not impossible, with conventional stripping devices now in use.
In the solution of these problems the machines and dies of said applications, and the die of the 1936, Serial No. 1o4,e9e (01.101-316) present application contemplates a stripping mechanism, wherein the pressure is applied by an arrangement independent of the die, this being accomplished by building a pressure applying mechanism for. stripping purposes into the machine, as distinguished from supplying each individual die with a self-contained complete stripping arrangement. The usual stripper plate mounted in advance of the cutting edges, is retained on the die, and this plate may be provided with marking edges thereon.
A primary object of the present invention is the provision of a die with a structural design to cooperate with such a built-in pressure applying mechanism, and with a stripper plate re- .siliently mounted for normal location in advance of the cutting edges of the die, but with a mounting of such a nature that little or no pressure will be exerted on the plate, and hence on the work, until the main stripping pressure is applied.
In repairing or replacing cutter members, stripper plates and the like, considerable time and the use of tools is usually required, and it is another object of the present invention to improve the construction 01 dies, such that the stripper may be rapidly detached from the die without the use of tools.
It is a further object to provide for rapid detachment, not only of the stripper plate but of the cutter or tube plate, thus providing ready access to any part of the structure without the use of tools, at a minimum expenditure of time, and also to faci itate repair and replacement of the cutting members.
To this end a novel mounting for the stripper is utilized, in which resiliently mounted sockets are detachably engaged with studs on the stripper, and are mounted in the base of the die independently of the stripper.
I The tube plate is arranged to be firmly latched to the base of the die, but in such a manner as to permit quick release.
A problem arises in the use of these dies, due to the fact that the work varies in size for a given run. Shoe parts are graded in accordance with the desired size of finished shoe, and because of the fact that the die must bear a fixed predetermined relation to the work, it is evident that as the size of the work varies, the relative position of the ornamentation in the work will vary accordingly, unless some means is provided to accommodate the die to the work.
Again the situation might arise wherein it is desired to use the same die on work of different shapes even though the size of shoe might remain constant, and under such circumstances the position of the ornamentation with relation to'the work might vary.
Some shoe manufacturers have attempted-to overcome these d'diiculties by employing a-plurality of dies, ore for an early portion of the run of graded wo :k, and another for a later portion thereof, or one die for one style or shape of work and -a different die for another style workpiece. This, however, places a burden on the manufacturerof keepinga number of dies on hand, with the attendant increase in the cost of the shoe.

These various methods may be satisfactory in some instances, where stripping pressures are obtained from within the die itself, and exact positioning of the die in the machine is of small moment, but in the-present instance the die must bear a peculiar coordination with the machine in order that the stripping pressures, which are obtained from movable parts of the machine, may be accurately and adequately applied to the proper parts of the die, and if the die is made adjustable, or with any portionshiftable with respect to the die carriage of the machine, there is danger, with conventionally adjustable dies, that the pressure mechanism will not properly function and breakage may result.
It is then, an important object of the present invention to provide a simple means of adjusting a die of the type described in the aforesaid applications, but in which the adjustment can be effected and the desired results obtained without in any manner detracting from the capabilities and advantageous features heretofore mentioned. v
To the attainment of the foregoing, and other objects which will appear as the description proceeds, reference may be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation partly in section, illustrating a die mounted in a machine;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail partly in section, showing the mode of detachably mounting the stripper plate on the die;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the die unit; and
Fig. 5 is a top plan of the die block, illustrating a portion of the pressure applyingmechanism in section.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in which like reference numerals designate like parts, it will be seen that such parts of the machine as are necessary to'show the operation of the die have been illustrated.
The die carriage A which houses the mechanism for applying stripping pressures, carries die unit B, in operative relation to the work support C. The die carriage A is in the form of a hollow block, reinforced internally by struts iii, any desired number of which may be utilized. Extending transversely of the interior of the carriage is a pressure plate II, ,the ends of which project beyond the sides of the die carriage, the side walls of the carriage being cut out to permit movement of this plate up and down within the carriage. This plate (I carries a series of studs l2 on its lower side, which ride insuitable guide openin s in the heavy base block l3 of the die carriage. Between the upper side of the plate Ii and the top wall of the housing or carriage A are a series {of heavy springs I which normally are tensioned to maintain the plate II in such a position that the ends of the studs I! are substantially flush with the bottom outer surface of the block i3.
In the illustrated embodiment the work support 0 is a vertically movable plunger arranged to press the work upwardly against the die, thus effecting the ornamenting operation on the work. Posts ll mounted on the work support are 10- cated to engage the extending ends of the plate II as the plunger rises, thereby raising the plate against the resistance of thesprings l4, and at the same time raising the studs i 2 within their guides. These posts i5 may be adjusted, as to height, for the purpose of regulating the movement .of
the plate ii, this adjustment affording a means, of controlling the compression of the springs I4,
and hence the downward pressure applied to the plate H.
The posts may be rubber surfaced if desired to minimize shock upon engagement with the plate II, and if desired may be connected across the ends of the work support C by bars lid.
The die unit Bin the form illustrated, comprises a base plate It, by means of which the unit is secured to the base block 13 of the die carriage. Lugs I! may be provided to prevent springing of the die when in use. A dovetail wedge i8 and an upstanding perforated lug I. may be utilized on the plate l8 (Fig. 1) to cooperate with suitable locking means on the base II, a preferredv form of locking means being described and claimed in the above mentioned application, Serial No. 83,796.
. The die unit B is composed of two major sections, one of which, D, is mounted in fixed relationship to the plate I6, and the other of which. E, is mounted for sliding movement on the plate It, being carried by guides 43. With this arrangement, as hereinafter described, the position of the section E may be varied with respect to the fixed section D.
The section D is quite similar to the die unit described in the above mentioned copending application Serial No. 90,427, and comprises a die block 2| secured to the base plate l6 by means of struts or sleeves 20. A single block, suitably apertured for discharge of chips or cuttings, might well be used, in lieu of the base plate I8 and die block 2|, spaced apart by struts, but for economy in manufacture, as well as facility in adjusting or varying the height of the die unit, the spaced plates are preferable.
A cutter or tube plate 23 is detachably mounted on the die block 2|, guide studs 24 (Fig. 4)
being provided to ensure accurate placement' stood that the flanges on one edge of the plate are first inserted in the corresponding openings of the die block, and then the latch 28 is swung over the flange 25 on opposite edge. Any suitable detentyas indicated at 21 (Fig. 4) may be used as an eflective means of holding the latch 28 in position at either end of its pivotal movemeat.
Plates 29 may be secured to the die block 2| to partially block the openings for the flanges 23, and to afford a shoulder for the flanges at one side of the block 2| whereupon the flanges may be slid thereunder.
The die block 2| will be suitably perforated beneath the tubes or cutting members 23, to permit discharge of chips and cuttings.
It is necessary that the stripper plate bemounted for yielding movement with respect to the tubes 28, and to this end certain of the struts 20 are utilized to house a spring 3|, encircling a pin 32, which is freely reciprocable within said sleeve. The die block 2|, the tube plate. 23, the base plate It are perforated to permit reciprocation of the pins. 4
The outer end of each pin 32 terminates in a resilient socket'33 adapted to receive and grip one of the knobs or ball shaped protuberances on the underside of the stripper plate 33 (Fig. 3). It will be evident that the stripper plate may be quickly removed from the die unit and as easily replaced, and being carried by the spring mounted pins 32 may readily move with respect to the tubes or cutting member 23. The springs 3| are preferably very light in construction, having suilicient strength only to position the stripper 30 normally in advance of the cutting element, and to provide a proper printing or marking pressure, when the stripper plate .is used for marking purposes, as fully described in Reissue Patent No. 20,294, above mentioned.
If the die unit is to be used for marking purposes as well as cutting operations, marking ribs or elements 36 may be formed on the outer side of the stripper 30.
The operation of the die unit thus far described will be readily apparent from the foregoing description. When the die unit is secured in operating position on the base l3 of the die carriage, the location of the inner ends of the pins 32 is such that they are opposed to the outer ends of the studs 2, the latter'being of much greater cross-sectional area than the pins 32, and so distributed throughout the base l3 as to permit a wide leeway to the die maker in locating the pins 32.
As the studs |2 move upwardly or away from the die, due to pressure against the plate H, as
the work supporting plunger C and posts |5 neath the heads of the stud |2 for the upper ends of the pins 32 on the stripper plate.
Little or no pressure isrequired for marking, and consequently where there is relative movement between the plunger or work support C and the die carriage A, toward each other, the marking elements 36 on the stripper plate will touch the work lightly, yielding toward the cutting elements under continued pressure; It will be understood, of course that when a marking medium such as ink is used, it will have been applied to the marking elements at a proper point in the cycle of operations. It will be obvious from the disclosures herein that the springs 3| are very much lighter than the stripper pressure applying springs M, the springs 3| being designed primarily to provide merely the requisite pressure for proper printing or marking of the work, without mutilating or otherwise injuring the work, as is more fully describedin the copending applications and patents, supra.
The marking operation will be followed by the cutting out step as further relative movement occurs, the pins 32 meanwhile projecting carry the studs |2 away from the base plate l3.
, After an omamenting operation has been performed on the work, the plunger or work support C and carriage A separate, whereupon the springs M will push the plate II and studs |2 toward the die unit and against the projecting ends of the pins 32, thereby pushing the stripper plate 30 outwardly to remove the work from the cutting elements.
The arrangement thus far described works very satisfactorily for a given portion of a run of shoes, but when it is desired-to make one die accommodate all sizes of a run, it is necessary that some adjustment between various portions of the die be provided.
Problems arise when adjustments are provided in the die, e. g., no matter how much leeway is aflorded the die maker by 'the relative diiference in cross-sectional area between the studs l2 and the pins 32, if one portion of the die is moved The slidably mounted die section E is, insofar as its structural characteristics for operating on the work are concerned, the same as the section D Just described. Thus we find the die block 2| having a cutter or tube plate 23 detachably mounted thereon with guide studs 24, flanges 25, plates 29 cooperative with the flanges, a piv-'- oted latch 26, held in place by a detent 21, all as described in connection with the die section D. Tubes or cutting elements 23 are carried by the plate 23 and a stripper plate 30 which may or may not be provided with marking elements 36 is detachably mounted in sockets 33 by the medium of knobs or protuberances 35, all as previously described.
However, the die section E. instead of being fixedly mounted on the base plate I3 is mounted for sliding movement thereon. To this end a sub-base plate 40 is provided, this plate being rigidly secured to .the die block 2| by means of struts illustrated in the present embodiment as sleeves 4| surrounding a central screw threadedpin 42. Guides or tracks 43, are mounted upon the main base plate It, and the sub-base plate 40 is slidable in said guides.
To actuate the section E in its movement toward and from the section D, there is provided a crank handle 44 pivotally mounted on the base plate l6 and having its offset inner end pivoted to a link 45 which in turn is pivoted to the sub-base plate 40. Secured to the outer edge of the base plate I3 is an arcuate end piece 46 which may be calibrated in shoe sizes, and notched along its edge to correspond with the calibrations. The crank 44 is provided with a resilient detent or spring pressed pawl 41 cooperative with the notches in the end piece 46. Movement of the crank 44 about the end piece 46 will be effective to push or pull the die section E. along the guideways 43, whereupon the proper adjustment may be made between the sections E and D to accommodate the desired size of the work.
To ensure accuracy at all times in the application of stripping pressures to the sockets 33 which mount the stripper 30 in the unit E there is provided an intermediate, pressure recelvini! plate 48, which is movable vertically in the die frame, but fixed against lateral movement, and
hence maintained always in-a definite relation to the studs-l2. This plate carries pins 4! which are similar to the pins 82 and function for the same purpose. Since the pins 48 are rigid with the plate 48, they will always be properly positioned relative to the studs i2.
Light springs 50 similar to the springs 3| surround the pins 49, being interposed between the base plate l6 and the intermediate pressure plate 48. The sockets 33 in the unit E terminate in heads positioned to engage the intermediate pressure plate 48 on the opposite side from the springs 50, and the sockets are free to move through the die block 2|. The intermediate plate 48 is slotted as at 52 and the sub-base plate 40 is slotted at 58 to permit movement of the die section E with relation to the intermediate pressure plate 48, i. e., the slots are provided to accommodate the struts 4| and pins 42, and the resiliently mounted pins 49.
The operation of this section is as follows. When the work supporting plunger engages the stripper 3!), pressure thereon will force same toward the cutting elements, and at the same time will force socket heads 5| against the intermediatepressure plate 48. This will result in the pins 49 being projected into the clearance space under the studs i2 as the main pressure plate II is raised by the posts IS on the work supporting plunger.
As the work supporting plunger C separates from the die unit, the pressure from the plate H will of course act through the pins 49 to force the stripper plate 30 outwardly from the cutting elements.
This operation, due to the fact that the intermediate plate 48 remains in a fixed relation to the block [3 of the die carriage, will be permitted, regardless of the relative position of the die section E with respect to the die carriage and the die section D.
Many economies in the manufacture and use of dies are obtained by the arrangement of this invention.
The die construction described, permits the use of adjustable dies with a machine having a built in pressure device, where heretofore the shoe manufacturer was limited to a non-adjustable die.
Inasmuch as the die is adjustable, a single unit can be used for a plurality of operations and the shoe manufacturer is not obliged to stock a large number of individual dies of diiferent sizes.
Further, since the means for providing stripping pressures is not required in an individual die or die section, the die construction is simplified over conventional dies, by the elimination of stripper springs, rubber strippers, reduction in the number of stripper posts and simplification of the various parts. By simplification and reduction in number of the stripper posts it is possible to locate these posts at points on the die heretofore thought impractical, due to the small space provided.
Marlnng plates, stripper plates, and the like can be made in sections corresponding to the work to be cut and marked and may be provided with a top surface having portions higher at some points than at others, thereby accommodating the plate to laminated work such as appliques, overlays, foxings, saddles, and the like, which in a closed shoe upper form a surface varying in level. A marking plate made in sections, will adjust itseli readily to care for varying levels or thicknesses of the work without exerting greater pressures on high points than on low points, or in other words, the mark ing will be uniform throughout.
By making the marking plate in sections corresponding to the work, the entire unit, with adjustable sections, is in itself simplified.
Again, an even distribution of pressure is obtained regardless of the particular die used, and tendency toward rocking or tilting of the stripper is avoided. This prevents binding of the stripper plate, with attendant failure to strip.
The structure of this invention permits the use of proper, relatively light pressures for marking and printing purposes,-together with application of pressure in any desired degree for stripping purposes, in a die which is adjustable in its nature, thus solving a problem, which might seem more simple in the case .01 a nonadjustable die.
It is to be understood that the illustrated embodiment of the invention as described herein, is intended as illustrative, rather than limiting, as many modifications within the scope of the invention will occur to those skilled in the art. For example, the arrangement of the die may be such as to cut up instead of down; the relative movement between the die carriage and the work support may be obtained by moving the die carriage toward the work support; and the die itself may be made with a single base plate instead of a die block separated by struts from the base plate as described herein.
Further, it is contemplated that the fixed die section may be omitted entirely, as the situation might occur in which it would be desirable to have but a single adjustable die section which could be shifted on the base of the die in order to vary the position of the operating portion of the die with respect to the work, and to the machine.
The features of the invention, are of course, readily applicable to dies which cut or perforate only, and which are not utilized for marking purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, constructed and arranged to mount and position the unit in an accurately aligned, operating position in the .machine, a plurality of die sections carried by said base, one of said sections being fixedly secured to the base and another 01' said sections being mounted on said base for sliding movement relative thereto and to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work,
2. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, constructed and arranged to mount and position the unit in an accurately aligned, operating position in the machine, a plurality of die sections carried by said base, one of said sections being fixedly secured to the base and another of said sections being mounted on said base for slding movement relative thereto and to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work, and means to accu rately position said slidable section relative to said fixed section.

A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, a plurality of die sections on said base, cutting'means on each of said sections, stripping means associated with said cutting means and mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, and means engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being efiective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, one 01' said sections being fixedly secured to the base and another. of said sections being mounted on said base for sliding movement relative to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work.
4. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, a plurality of die sections on said base, cutting meanson each of said sections, stripping means associated with said cutting means and mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, and means engageable with the said stripping means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, one of said sections being fixedly secured to 'the base and another of said sections being mounted on said base for sliding movement relative to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work, and means to accurately position said slidable section relative to said fixed section.
5. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, a plurality of die sections on said base, one of said sections being fixedly secured to the base and another of said sections being mounted on said base for sliding movement relative to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work; stripping means associated with each of said sections, means engageable with the stripping means of said fixed section and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being eiiective by such engagement to actuate said stripping means; a pressure applying plate engageable with the stripping means of said slidable section, means engageable with said plate and with said pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being effective by such engagement to actuate the strippin means of said slidable section.

A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base and cutting means, said cutting means being mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means associated with said cutting means, and mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, means engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means.

A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base and cutting means, said cutting means being mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means associated with said cutting means, and mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, means engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, said last means including an element to receive pressure from the pressure applying element of the machine and to transmit such pressure to the stripping means regardless of the position of the cutting means on the base.
8. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, a, plurality of die sections on said base, cutting means on each of said sections, stripping means associated with said cutting means and mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, means movably mounted in each of said sections, said means being engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, one of said sections being fixedly'secured to the base and another of said sections being mounted on said base for sliding movement relative to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work.
9. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, a plurality of die sections on said base, cutting means on each of said sections, stripping means associated with said'cutting means and mounted for movement relative'to said cutting means, means movably mounted in each of said sections, said means being engageable with said stripping means and witha pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, one of said sections being fixedly secured to the base and another oi said sections being mounted on said 'base for sliding movement relative to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work, and means to accurately position said slidable section relative to said fixed section.
10. A die unit, for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, cutting means mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said cutting'means, means in said unit engageable with said stripping means for movement therewith, said means also being engageable with a pressure applying element of the machine and eifective by such engagement to actuate the strip ping means.
11.'A die unit, for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, cutting means fixedly secured to said base, stripping means therefor, additional cutting means mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said movable cutting means, means in said unit engageable with said stripping means for movement therewith, said last means also being engageable with a pressure applying element of the machine and effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means.
12. A die unit, for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, cutting means fixedly secured to said base, stripping means therefor, additional cutting means mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said movable cutting means, means in said unit engageable with said last stripping means for movement therewith, said last means also being engageable with a pressure applying element of the machineand efiective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, and means whereby said pressure applying element of the machine is effective to actuate the stripping means for said fixed cutting means.
13. A die unit, for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, cutting means mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, means in said unit engageable with said stripping means for movement therewith, and means engageable with said last means and having a portion extendable beyond the nor- .mal confines of the unit whereby to engage a pressure applying element of the machine, and eflective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means.
14. A die unit, for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, cutting means fixedly secured to said base, stripping means thereror, additional cutting means mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said movable cutting means, means in said unit engageable with said last stripping means for movement therewith, and means engageable with said last means and including a portion extendable beyond the normal confines oi the unit whereby to engage a pressure applying element of the machine, and effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means.
15. A die unit, for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a'base, cutting means fixedly secured to said base, stripping means therefor, additional cutting means mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said movable cutting means, means in said unit engageable with said last stripping means for movement therewith, means engageable with said last means and including a portion extenoabie'beyond tne normal confines of the .unit whereby to engage a pressure applying element of the machine, and effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, and means-for operatively connecting the pressure applying element or the machine to the stripping means for said fixed cutting means, whereby to actuate same.

A die of the class described, comprising a base, cutting means mounted for lateral move-- ment on said base, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, actuating means for said stripping means comprising a stud engageable with said stripping means, said stud extending through the base and movable with said stripper to a position where one end projects beyond the plane of the base, said stud being efiective to actuate the stripper.
17. A die of the class described, comprising a base, cutting means mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, actuating means for said stripping means comprising a movable plate engageable with said stripping means, and a stud engageable with said plate, said stud extending through the base and movable with said stripping means and plate to a position where one end projects beyond the plane of the base, said stud being effective to actuate the stripper.
18. In a die of the class described, a base, cutting means mounted for lateral movement relative to said base, stripping means for said cutting means, means constantly applying light stripping pressure to said stripping means, and means I to receive intermittently applied stripping pressure.
19. In a die of the class described, a base, cutting means fixedly secured to said base, stripping means therefor, additional cutting means,
movement relative to said movable cutting means, means constantly applying light stripping pressure to each or said stripping'means, and means to receive intermittently applied stripping pressure. 6

In a die of the class described, a base, cutting means including a plurality of cutting elements on said base, means to vary the relative position of said elements to each other, stripping means for said elements, actuating means for the 10 stripping means having a portion engageable with said stripping means for movement therewith and extendable beyond the normal confines oi the unit whereby to engage an actuating member or the machine, said stripper actuating means 15 including a pressure receiving plate engageable with the stripping means of one 01 said cutting elements.
21. A die unit for use in an omamenting machine comprising a base, means to mount said base in the omamenting machine, a die section for operating upon a piece of work, work stripping means associated with said die section, actuating means therefor, means mounting said die section for sliding movement on said base where- $5 by said section may be adjusted to vary its position relative to the base and to the actuating means for said stripping means, said actuating means being engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element 01 the machine eflective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means.

A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base and cutting means, said cutting means being in part rigidly fixed to said 35 base and in part mounted for movement to adjusted positions on said base, stripping means associated with said cutting means, and mounted for movement relative'to said cutting means, means engageable with the stripping means for 0 said fixed part or the cutting means and with a pressure applying element or the machine, said last means being effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means.
23. In a die of the class described, a base, cutting means fixedly secured to said base, stripping means therefor, additional cutting means mounted Ior lateral movement relative to said fixed cutting means, stripping means mounted for movement relative to said movable cutting 50 means, means constantly applying light stripping pressure to each of said stripping means, and means engageable with the stripping means for. said fixed cutting means, constructed, arranged and positioned to receive relatively heavier, inter- 55 mittently applied stripping pressures.
24. A die unit for use in an ornamentlng machine, comprising a base and cutting means, said cutting means being in part rigidly fixed to said base and in part mounted for movement to adjusted positions on said base, stripping means associated with said cutting means, andmounted for movement relative to said cutting means, means engageable with the stripping means for both parts of the cutting means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said last means being efiective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means.
25. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base and cutting means, said 0 cutting means being mounted for lateral movement on said base, stripping means associatedwith said cutting means, and mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, marking means carried by said stripping means, pressure apply- 1 ing means engageable with said stripping means constructed and arranged to apply a proper marking pressure only thereto, and means engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element oi. the machine, said last means being eflective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means ior stripping purposes.
26. In a die of the class described, a base, cutting means flxedly secured to said base, work marking means associated therewith, additional cutting means, mounted for lateral movement relative to said fixed cutting means, work mark-,
ing means mounted for movement relative to said movable cutting means, and means effective to apply proper marking pressures to said marking means. '27. In a die of the class described, a base, cutting means fixedly secured to said base, work marking means associated therewith, additional cutting means, mounted for lateral movement relative to said fixed cutting means, work marking means mounted for movement relative to said movable cutting means, means effective to apply proper marking pressures to said marking means, and means efiective to receive intermit- -tently applied, relatively heavier stripping pressures to said marking means and to transmit same through the marking means, to the work.
28. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine comprising a base, cutting means mounted for movement on said base, marking means mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, means in said unit engageable with said marking means for applying a light marking pressure thereto, stripping means associated with said cutting means, and means in said unit engageablewith said stripping means for movement therewith, said means also being engageable with a pressure applying element of the machine and effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means. 29. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine comprising a base, cutting means'mounted for movement on said base, marking means mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, means in'said unit engageable with said marking means for applying alight marking pressure thereto, stripping means associated with said cutting means, and means in said unit engageable with said stripping means for movement therewith, said means also being engageable with a pressure applying element of the machine and effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, said stripper actuating means comprising a stud extending through the base of the die and movable with said stripper to a position where one and projects beyond the plane of the base into position for engagement with said pressure applying element of the machine.
30. In a die of the class described, a base, a marking die and a cutting die, said cutting die having a portion relatively fixed with respect to said base and a portion relatively movable on said base to different positions of adjustment, and
means for applying light printing pressure to said marking die.
31. A die of the class described ior use in a machine having a pressure applying plunger effective to produce relative movements between a supported work piece and the die, into and out of a cutting and marking contact, comprising a base, cutting means having a portion fixedly secured to said base and a portion mounted for movement on said base relative to said fixed portion into various positions oi. adjustment and marking means associated with and movable with relation to said cutting means; said marking means being formed with marking elements adapted to receive ink and ink mark the work piece during a single operation in which the work piece is cut, means resiliently mounting said marking elements on said base, said resilient mounting being proportioned and arranged to develop a pressure suflicient only to provide a light contact of the marking elements with the work piece throughout the cutting movement and regardless of adjusted position, to properly ink mark the supported work piece as part of a single marking and cutting operation.
32. A die of the class described for use in a machine having a pressure applying plunger effectiveto produce relative movements between a supported work piece and the die, into and out of a cutting and marking contact, comprising a base, cutting means having a portion fixedly secured to said base and a portion mounted for movement on said base relative to said fixed portion into various positions of adjustment, and a marker plate associated with and movable with relation to said cutting means, said plate being formed with marking elements adapted to receive ink and ink mark the work piece during a, single operation in which the work piece is cut, means resiliently mounting said plate on said base in a plane adjacent the plane of the cutting means, said resilient mounting being proportioned and arranged to develop a pressure suflicient only to provide a light contact of the marking elements with the work piece during the cutting movement, to properly ink mark the supported work piece as part of a single marking and cutting operation.
33. A die of the class described comprising a base, cutting means having a portion fixedly secured to said base and a portion mounted for movement on said base relative to said fixed portion into various positions of adjustment, and a plate associated with and movable with relation to said cutting means, said plate being formed with marking elements effective to ink mark the work during a cutting operation, mounting means for said plate having an amplitude of movement greater than that portion of the cutting means of the die which must penetrate the work in order to cut it, and spring means resisting movement of said mounting means insufiiciently to build up a pressure during the penetration oi work by said cutting means greater than required for ink marking the work without penetrating or indenting the same.
34. A cutting and marking instrumentality for use in a cutting and marking operation wherein means is provided for developing stripping pres: sures exclusive of the cutter and marker, comprising a base, cutting means having a portion fixedly secured to said base and a portion mounted for movement on said base relative to said fixed portion into various positions of adjustment,
movable stripping means associated with said cutting means, work marking elements movable with said stripping means, means carried by the instrumentality to position said stripping means slightly advanced with respect to said cutting means and to apply light pressure'through said stripping means to mark the work, and additional means to receive and transmit a pressure to the work in the same direction as said first mentioned pressure, regardless of the adjusted position of the cutting means, whereby to strip the work from the cutting means.
35. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, cutting means having a portion fixedly secured to said base and a portion mounted for movement on said base relative to said fixed portion into various positions oi adjustment, a resiliently mounted marker on said unit, the mounting thereof being constructed and arranged to yieldingly project the marking portion of the marker slightly beyond the plane of the cutting means, under a light pressure which will resist movement properly for eflecting the marking of a piece of work, and means to receive and transmit a pressure to the work additional to the marking pressure of said resilient mounting, whereby to facilitate stripping the work from the die unit.
36. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, a plurality of die sections on said base, cutting means on at least one oi, said sections, stripping means associated with said cutting means and mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, and pressure receiving means engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element oi the machine, said pressure receiving means including a plate held against lateral movement in said die unit, and effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, one of said sec- 4 tions being fixedly secured to the base, and another of said sections being mounted on said base for lateral movement relative to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate work of different sizes and shapes.
37. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, a die section on said base, cutting means on said die section, stripping means associated with said cutting means and mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, and pressure receiving means engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said pressure receiving means including a plate held against lateral movement in said die unit, and effective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, said section being mounted on said base for lateral movement relative to said plate, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate the work being ornamented.
38. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base, a die section on said base, cutting means on said die section, stripping means associated with said cutting means and 'mounted for movement relative to 'said cutting means, and pressure receiving means engageable with said stripping means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said pressure receiving means being eiiective by such engagement to actuate the stripping means, said section being mounted on said base for lateral movement relative to the base, whereby said die may be adjusted to accommodate the work being ornamented.
39. A die unit for use in an ,omamenting machine, comprising a base, cutting means on said base, marking means mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, and pressure receiving means engageable with said marking means and with a pressure applying element of the machine, said pressure receiving means being effective by such engagement to actuate the marking means through a stripping operation at the cutting means is oflered to the stripping action, said cutting means and marking means being mounted for lateral movement with respect to said pressure receiving means whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate the work being ornamented. 4

A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a 'base constructed and arranged to mount and position the unit in an accurately aligned, operating position in the machine, a plurality of die sections carried by said base, one of said sections being fixedly secured to the base, and another of said sections being mounted on said base for sliding movement relative thereto and to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work, work stripping means associated with one of said die sections, means to receive stripping pressures applied to the die unit irom an external source, and intermediate means to receive said stripping pressures from said first pressure receiving means and transmit same to said stripping means.
41. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base constructed and arranged to mount and position the unit in an accurately aligned, operating position in the machine, a plurality of die sections carried by said base, one of said sections being fixedly secured to the base and another of said sections being mounted on said base for sliding movement relative thereto and to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work, work stripping means associated with said sliding section, means to receive stripping pressures applied to the die unit from an external source,- and intermediate means to receive said stripping pressures from said first pressure receiving means and transmit same to said stripping means. a

A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine, comprising a base constructed and arranged to mount and position the unit in an accurately aligned, operating position in the machine, a plurality of die sections mounted on said base, one of said sections being fixedly secured to the base, and another of said sections being mounted on said base for sliding movement relative thereto and to said fixed section, whereby said die unit may be adjusted to accommodate a variety of work, work stripping means associated with one of said die sections, means to receive stripping pressures applied to the die unit from an external source, intermediate means to receive said stripping pressures from said first pressure receiving means and transmit same to said stripping means, and means to accurately position and secure said 'slidable section relative to said fixed section.

In a die of the class described, a base, cutting means fixedly secured to said base, work marking means associated therewith, additional cutting means mounted for lateral movement relative to said fixed cutting means, work marking means mounted for movement relative to said movable cutting means, means efiective to apply proper marking pressures to said marking means, means to receive externally applied stripping pressures, and intermediate means cooperative with said first receiving means to receive and transmit stripping pressures to the work marking means associated with said movable cutting means. A die unit for use in an ornamenting machine comprising a base, cutting means mounted for movement on said base, marking means mounted for movement relative to said cutting means, means in said unit engageable with said marking means for applying a light marking pressure thereto, stripping means associated with said cutting means, means in said unit engageable with a pressure applying element of the machine, and intermediate means interposed between said last 7 mentioned means and said stripping means, and
effective by engagement therewith to actuate said stripping means.
45. In a die of the class described, a base, a marking die and a cutting die, said cutting die having a portion relatively fixed with respect to said base and a portion relatively movable on said base to different positions of adjustment, means for applying light printing pressure to said marking die, and means for transmitting an externally applied work stripping pressure to said marking die.
