MATTRESS COVER Filed Dec. 28, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 m M C s w o L Patented Nov. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT ores 8 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved cover for mattresses and analogous articles.
It is the object of the invention to provide a mattress cover, preferably of textile material, which will protect the mattress covered thereby from dust and soiling. The mattress, according to the present invention, carries forward the improvements to a mattress which are set forth in my copending application, Serial No. 30,681 filed July 10, 1935, of which the present application may be considered a continuation-in-part, which application has matured into Patent No. 2,066,252, December 29, 1936.
This the object of the present invention to provide a mattress cover composed of a main casing and a closure therefor which is so connected to the main casing that it may be swung away therefrom in the course of mounting of the cover on a niattressin order to present the least possible hindrance to the operation of slipping the cover onto the mattress and which at the conclusion of the mounting operation may be arranged to fit snugly over the opening of the cover so that an effective seal against the entry of dust to the mattress is obtained.
In one form of the present invention which makes use of hooded portions of smaller extent than the complete hood, an opportunity is had of using pieces of material which otherwise might go to waste, thereby resulting in a distinct economy in manufacture.
Further objects and purposes will appear from a more detailed description of the invention following hereinafter, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective View of my improved mattress cover with the mattress in a fully covered position,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the left end of the mattress cover shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a different embodiment of the invention from that illustrated in. Fig. 1, illustrating a different form of fastening means,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of another embodiment of a mattress cover making use of two component parts in the formation of the hooded closure,
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing different forms of fastening means for the various parts of the assembly, and
Fig. 6 is a rectangular, longitudinal sectional view of the mattress cover shown in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 1 is shown a cover formed by a casing or bag-like portion 1 Which is designed to inclosea mattress or box spring body to exclude dust therefrom. This casing is composed of two lateral walls 3 and 3', end wall 4, and top and bottom walls 2 and 2, all of substantially rectangular contour. The lateral faces 3 and3 and the top and bottom faces 2 and 2 extend for substantially the complete extentof the mattress body to be covered (Fig. 5) and define an opening at the left and which is adapted to be covered by ahooded closure 5. The relationship of the casing and the closure with respect to the mattress walls may be varied in any desired manner and it iswithin the contemplation of the present invention to apply the hooded closure upon the lateral face of the mattress rather than upon the end thereof.
The hooded closure 5 formed by an end wall with side walls 8 and 8 and top wall I attached thereto is connected to the edge of the lower face a 2 and is designed to be swung about that edge in the course of executing the covering and uncovering operations of the mattress. A slide fastener tape Iii is attached to each edge of the casing on the lower side 2' of the cover adjacent the connecting line ii between the casing and hood. A cooperating slide fastener tape Iii is attached to each side wall 8 and 8 at the bottom boundary thereof and is designed to be interengaged with the slide fastener tape Iii by the movement of a conventional zipper slide its. Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the slide fastener elements in engaging position. When it is desired to remove the mattress cover, a movement of the slide lilsto the left will serve to disengage the elements It and Ill and thereby permit the closure 5 to be swung about the line of attachment 6 so that it offers no hindrance whatever to the removal of the cover from the mattress.
In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 3 cooperating buttons and button holes 20 are shown in lieu of the slide fastener elements. Any other fastening means known in the art such as snap fasteners, hooks and eyes, and the like may be availed of. In both of the embodiments represented above, supplemental fastening means it in the form of buttons and button holes may be provided in order to assure the maintenance of the hooded closure in position. However, the full benefit of the present invention may be realized without resorting to this expedient.
In the embodiments illustrated in Figs. 4 to 6, provision is made for removing the hooded closure from the field of operation in the course of mounting and dismo-unting the mattress cover to a greater degree than that illustrated in the embodiments described above. In Fig. 4, the hooded closure is formed of two parts, l5a and IE1), each of which may be fixed to the casing at a single point only, namely |8a and 18b, respectively. Slidefastener tapes 30a and 30b extending around the top, end, and bottom faces of the hood make possible the engagement of the two hooded portions at their several meeting edges to obtain a unitary hooded closure as shown in Fig. 4. In this conditioning of the parts, the slide fastener elements l0 and I0 are also interengaged by means of the slide its. The operation of the slide 303 from the position shown in Fig. 4 to its limiting position upon the bottom side of the hood makes possible a complete separation of the hood portions Mia and I52), and the operation of the slide Ills to the left accomplishes a nearly complete severance of the hooded closure from the casing, an attachment being had only at the points !8a and I81).
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, fastening means it in the form of buttons or fasteners, serve to unite the hood portions 25a and 2%, having the top and bottom faces Zia and 2% which overlap the extremities of the main casing as shown in Fig. 5. In this embodiment, stitching may be provided at one or both of the edges ii and $3 to thereby attach the side walls 322- and 38' to the casing walls 3 and 3' respectively. Although according to this construction the movement of the hood portions is more restricted than that rendered possible with the design shown in Fig. 4, the full benefits of the invention may be realized thereby. In both embodiments, supplemental fastening means ll be provided to maintain the parts in place.
The edges of the cover are shown in distinct outline for the purpose of illustration only. They may be continuous, stitched, plain or bound with tape. Each of the walls may form continuations of the adjacent ones or the several parts be sewn together in any manner desired in order to obtain a configuration as shown herein.
Although I have shown and described several preferred embodiments of my invention, changes may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
