IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-SWEEPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,854, dated July 29, 1879; application filed May 23, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MELVILLE R. BissELL, of the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Sweepers, of which the following is a specification.

The nature of my invention relates to a carpet-sweeper having the dust-pans attached together in some suitable manner, and so constructed that they can readily be detached from the frame or case of the sweeper.

The object of my invention is to enable the operator to readily detach and remove the dust-pans from the sweeper, in order to empty the contents of the pans.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention complete and ready for use. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the two dust-pans attached to the cover of the sweeper and detached from the sweeper case or frame.

In Fig. 1, B represents the frame or case of the machine; H, the handle, and A the brushroller.

In Fig. 2, P P represent the dustpans, the outer sides of the pans being directly attached to the case-cover D, and the inner sides of the pans being attached to the cover by means of the braces W W. The cover D, when constructed as above described, may be provided with a handle, 0, in order more readily to lift it, with the pans, from the case. It may also be provided with a catch at either end, for the purpose of attaching it more firmly to the case.

One end of the dust-pans is open, as shown in Fig. 2. The other end may be closed, in Whole or in part.

By placing the cover D on the case B the dust-pans P P assume the position they occupy in the ordinary carpet-sweeper.

When the operator desires to empty the dust from the sweeper he can lift the cover and pans from the case and empty the pans from the open ends.

This device saves the trouble of carrying the entire sweeper, and enables the user to empty the dust readily into the stove or any small receptacle without spilling or litter.

Instead of attaching the dust-pans to the cover, as above described, they may be attached together by any suitable device beneath the cover, in which case the cover would be opened and then the pans removed, sub stantially as above described; and, again, the dust-pans may be attached together and the case so constructed as to allow the dust-pans to be removed from the end of the case; but I deem the method of attaching the pans directly to the cover D, so as to be lifted out with it, to be the simplest, cheapest, and best.

I am aware that it is not new to provide a sweeper with dust-pans rigidly attached together and capable of being lifted bodily from the sweeper-case to empty the dust, and do not wish to claim such device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a carpet-sweeper, the combination, with the lid or cover, of the dust-pans P P, attached to and bodily removable therewith, substantially as herein set forth.
