This invention relates to hair wave forming and setting devices, and more particularly to a combined comb and hair clamp.
An object of this invention is to provide a hair device of this character in which the comb is disposed between the clamp elements and so interconnected therewith that upon opening the jaws of the clamp, the comb is automatically projected to an operative position below the ends of the opened jaws, and upon closing the jaws, said comb is automatically retracted.
A further object is to provide a construction whereby the comb is directed and guided in a plane bisecting the angle through which the jaws move at all times during the projective or the retractive movements of the comb.
Another object of this invention is to provide a wave forming and setting structure which has few structural parts, is easy to manufacture, and relatively simple to assemble.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent as the description thereof proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

The device comprises a comb or toothed element l@ which is attached to supporting plates or arms il and I2. It is contemplated that the comb I8 and the arms Il and I2 may be made either integral or of separate parts connected together, .and that any suitable materials may be used for such construction. The shape and construction of these plates or arms is best seen in Fig. 6. They may each have a vertical slot I3 and two horizontal slots I4 and I5 for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
The clamp structure comprises two similar pivotally connected clamp members indicated generally as I6 and il. The member I6 has a handle portion I8 and two ears 20 and 22, one at each end, bent at right angles thereto. At its lower portion is the wave clamping jaw 24 with the outwardly flared portion 26 and stamped out teeth 28.
The clamp member I'I is constructed similarly to member I6 with handle portion I8, right angle ears 2I and 23, clamping jaw 25, ared portion 2l and teeth 29.
The jaw portions 24 and 25 just above the teeth are bent outwardly to provide a space or a pocket, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which the comb is received when in its normal retracted position.
The two members I6 and I'I are counterparts in form and construction but are reversed in position in assembly. This reduces the number of different parts that have to be made and provides an economical structure.
The clamp members I6 and I'I are pivotally mounted on a pin 30 which passes freely through openings 3l arranged centrally in the overlapping ears 28, 2|, 22, 23. This pin 30 also passes through the vertical slots I3 in the comb supporting arms II and I2, which slots provide the necessary clearance to permit up and down movement of the comb relative t the pivot of the clamp jaws. The ears 28 and 22 are also provided with arcuate slots 32, 34, respectively, and ears 2I and 23 are similarly provided with arcuate slots 33, 35, respectively.
36 is a pin which is fixed to move the ears 20` and 22 of the clamp member I6 which pinv passes through slots 33 and 35 of ears 2I and 23 ofl the companion clamp member I 1, as well as through horizontal slots I of both comb carrying members I2.
Correspondingly, a pin 31 is fixed to move with the ears 2l and 23 of clamp member I'I and passes through slots 32 and 34 of ears 20 and 22 of the other clamp member and through horizontal slots I4 of both comb carrying members I2.
A spring 38 surrounds the pin 38. Its ends are so shaped as to permit of free movement of pins 36 and 3l during operation of the device. These looped ends be'ar on the clamp members I 6 and I1 to urge them normally closed.
In use, the operator grasps the handles I8 and i9 and presses them toward each other to open the clamp members E6 and Il, as shown in Fig. 6. The pin 3G, rotatable with clamp member i6, and the pin 3l, rotatable with clamp member Il will be moved downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 6 and will carry with them the comb supporting members ll and i2 and the comb I0. The comb is thus automatically moved and guided downwardly beyond the ends of the teeth 28 and 29 into its pro- 5 jected or operative position and through a plane that bisects the angle of movement of the clamp jaws. Since the comb extends a considerable distance below the ends of the jaw teeth 2B and 29 in the open position of the clamp, the comb may be safely used without danger of the hair being caught in the teeth of the jaws.
The comb in its extended position is drawn through the hair to the point'where'thewave is to be formed, the hair preferably having rst been dampened. At this point the device, with the comb engaged in the hair, is shifted lengthwise in the direction in which the wave is to be formed. The clamp arms l5 and I7 are-then re-v leased and are closed by the action of the spring In their closing motion, the clamp jaws gather the'hair and raise it in ridge form, and the comb l is automatically withdrawn from the hair Hby the Vmechanism described above. The clamp holds'the raised wave in form until the ghair is dry and set.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 'l and 8, each comb carrying arm 39 is formed with a -notchli in which the pivot pin rides during the up and down movements of lthe comb lli.

What I claim is: l. In a hair wave forming and setting device, a dpair of pivotally connected clamp jaws, a toothed member disposed between said jaws, means conecting the toothed member to the clamp operative to move said member automatically downward rela-tively to the pivotal point of the jaws to a position below the lower ends of said jaws upon opening the clamp and to retract said member upon closing the clamp.
2. In a hair wave forming and setting device ci the character described, toothed means for I0-forming a wave, means for clamping and holding the wave after it is formed, and means actuated by the clamping and holding means in its closing motion to retract the wave forming means from its wave forming position, said clamping 75\and holding means acting to extend the wave forming means to its wave forming position upon the opening motion thereof.
3. In a hair wave forming and setting device of the character described, a comb for forming the wave, clamping members cooperating with said comb for clamping and holding the wave after it is formed, and means actuated by the clamping members upon their closing motion to retract the comb from its wave forming position.
4. In a hair wave forming and setting device 1 .0i the character described, a comb for preparing the hair and forming a wave therein, clamping means cooperating with said comb for clamping and holding the wave after it is formed, means actuated by the clamping means for retracting 1 the comb from its wave forming position upon actuation of the clamping means towards closing position, and means actuated by the clamping means for extending the comb to its wave forming position upon actuation of the clamping 2 means towardopen position. In a device of the character described, a comb, a clamp having a pair of cooperative jaw 65 members between which the comb is disposed, said clamp members being pivoted on a pin to rotate thereon, said comb being connected to arms having vertical and horizontal slots, said pin passing through said vertical slots to provide guiding means and to allow relative motion between said pin and comb, a pin connected to move with each clamp member, said latter pins cooperating with said horizontal slots in said arms to allow relative motion-*between -said latter pins and the pivot pin, whereby as said clamp members are opened or closed said comb is automatically projected or retracted respectively.

In a device of the character described, a comb, a clamp having a pair of cooperative jaw members between which the comb is disposed, said clamp members being pivoted on a pin to rotate thereon, said comb being connected to arms having vertical and horizontal slots, said pin passing through said vertical slots to provide guiding means and to allow relative motion between said pin and comb, a pin connected to move with each clamp member, said latter pins cooperating with said horizontal slots in said arms to allow relative motion between said latter pins and the horizontal slots of said arms, an arcuate slot in each clamp member, the pin that is connected to move with one clamp member passing through the slot of the other clamp member thereby providing for relative motion between the clamp members without interference of their pins, said pins and slots cooperating to project said comb as said clamp members are opened and to retract said comb as said members are closed.
11. In a device of the character described, a clamp having a pair of angularly movable pivotally connected jaws, a vertically movable comb disposed between said jaws, and means cooperating with said jaws to guide and direct the movement of the comb in a plane bisecting the angle between the two jaws at all angular positions of the jaws during the opening or closing movement thereof.
12. In a device of the character described, a clamp having a pair of angularly movable pivotally connected jaws, a comb disposed between said jaws, means for guiding the comb in a plane bisecting the angle between the two jaws at all angular positions of the jaws during the opening or closing movement thereof, and means for advancing the comb during the opening movement of the jaws and for retracting it during the closing movement.
13. In a device of the character described, a clamp comprising a pair of jaw members, resilient means acting on the jaws to maintain them normally closed, a comb disposed between. the jaws, supporting arms carrying the comb, a pin on which the jaws are pivoted which pin passes through an opening in the arms, each of said arms having a pair of studs that pass through slots in the clamp members, said studs and slots cooperating to guide the comb throughout its path of movement and to project or retract it automatically as the clamp is opened or closed.
14. In a device of the character described, a clamp comprising a pair of jaw members, resilient means acting on the jaws to maintain them normally closed, a comb disposed between the jaws, supporting arms carrying the comb, a pin on which the jaws are pivoted which pin passes through an opening in the arms, each of said arms having at least one stud that passes through a slot in each clamp member, said stud and slots cooperating to guide the comb throughout its path of movement and to project and retract it automatically as the clamp is opened or closed.
l5, In a device of the character described, a clamp comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaw members, a comb disposed between the jaws, supporting arms carrying the comb, each of said arms having at least one stud that passes through a slot in each clamp member, said stud and slots cooperating to guide the comb throughout its path of movement and to project and retract it automatically as the clamp is opened or closed.
