Description

Aug. 15, 1939 w. cs; SHERMAN PROTECTIVE DEVICE Filed Ndv. 2a, 1938 INVENTOR William 6i Jim ATTOR N EYS WITNESS Patented Aug. 15, 1939 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to protective devices and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of a protective device adapted to be secured over a latch bolt operating member and rotatable relative thereto to preclude operation of said member.
Another object of my invention is to provide a protective device capable of attachment to and detachment from a latch bolt operating member, for instance a door-knob or the like, and which when attached thereto serves as a guard for preventing access to and operation of said door-knob.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above described character capable of being attached to various standard types of door-knobs already in use without modifying the same.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, eflicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention, partly in section, illustrating the latter as attached to a door-knob.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
In practicing my invention, I provide a cylindrical casing 5 adapted to be connected to and enclose a door-knob 6 of ordinary construction whereby the latter is rendered inaccessible for use. The casing 5 comprises a pair of sections 1 hinged together as at 8 whereby the latter may be operated to open positions as illustrated in dotted line in Figure 1 for attachment over and removal from the door-knob as desired.
The sections 1 are of semi-cylindrical configurations and have secured on their inner circumferential faces pairs of radially extending arms 9, the inner ends of which are disposed at an angle to form bearing members Iii through which are journaled ends of pins I I, the opposite ends of said pins being secured in inwardly extending ends of coacting arms l2, the latter being formed from the rear ends of the sections 1 as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. Rotatably mounted on the pins ll, between the inner ends of the arms 9 and I2, are rollers I3 having rotatable engagement with the reduced inner face of the knob 6 and which is fixed on an operating shaft 611 for operating the latch bolt of a door or the like (not shown).
The peripheral walls of the sections 1, adjacent the lower abutting ends thereof, are provided with subjacently extending pins l4 over which is inserted a lock 15 whereby to secure the ends of the sections 1 in locked position about the doorknob 6 as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
The lock is of an ordinary construction and operated by a detachable key l6 and thereby prevents anyone without the key from removing the casing 5 from about the knob.
When the casing 5 is disposed in locked condition about the knob 6, access to the knob is precluded, and movement of said casing effects rotation of the latter relative to the knob and precludes operation of said latch bolt.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and efiicient device capable of attachment to and detachment from door-knobs and the like, and which when attached thereto forms a protective device precluding operation of said door-knob. A device of this character is especially adaptable for use in connection with door-knobs associated with latch constructions not having a lock mechanism incorporated therewith and also in instances where the key of the type having lock mechanism associated therewith is not available.
It is also obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation which are capable of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising, a casing provided with a pair of hinged sections adapted to embrace a latch bolt operating member, arms mounted in each of said sections and extending toward said member, rollers mounted on said arms for engagement with said member whereby to eifect rotation of said sections relative to said member to preclude operation of said member when said sections are secured together about and entirely enclose said member. s
2. A device of the character described, comprising, a casing provided with a pair of hinged sections adapted to embrace a latch bolt operating member, arms mounted in each of said sections and extending toward said member, rollers mounted on said arms for engagement with said member whereby to effect rotation of said sections relative tosaid member to preclude operation of said member when said sections are secured together and entirely enclose said member, and means for securing said sections locked about said member.
WILLIAM G. SHERMAN.
