1 Claim.
This invention relates to grinding wheels and more especially to segmental grinding wheels embodying an annular adaptor or supporting member to which partially annular sectors of abrasive material, usually termed abrasive segments, are detachably secured.
The principal object of the invention is to improve the art of segmental grinding wheels.
Another object of the invention is to provide l an abrasive segment with a novel form of anchoring base portion and an annular adaptor or support member with cooperating clamping means whereby all lateral faces of such anchoring portions of the abrasive segments are locked to the adaptor or support member through the action of but a single movable clamp for each segment.
Another object of the invention is to provide detachable abrasive segments for a grinding 2O wheel with beveled clamping surfaces adjacent the bases thereof and a cooperating annular adaptor or supporting member having a single movable clamp for each abrasive segment whereby all lateral surfaces of the abrasive segments are so engaged as to cause a dove-tailing locking action of the segments to the adaptor effective in all directions through movement of the single clamp for each abrasive segment.
Other objects, features and advantages will become apparent-from the following description and appended claim.
For the purpose of illustrating the genus of theA invention, a specific concrete embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan of an abrasive segment constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the segment shown in Fig. l, the corner of the base portion of the segment being broken away and shown in section;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation taken from the left hand end of the segment shown in the preceding figures;
Fig. 4 is a top plan of an annular adaptor or support member constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention and having assembled therewith one complete abrasive segment and a portion of another of the type illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3; l
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and,
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section taken substantially on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, the abrasive portion of the present. grinding wheel includes a plurality of abrasive segments I0 which are partially annular sectors of substantially rectangular cross-section, taken along any radial plane,
as indicated in Figs. l, 2 and 3. As indicated in 6 Figs. 1 and 2, all fourlateral surfaces of the abrasive segments l0 are provided with beveled holding surfaces Il which make an angle of approximately five degrees with reference to the vertical, when the abrasive segments are in the 10 position indicated by Fig. 2. Preferably, strips l2 of cork, or similar packing material, are cemented to the beveled holding surfaces Il of the abrasive segments I0 to protect the cooperating clamping surfaces of the adaptor or supporting 15 member to which the abrasive segments are to be locked.
Reference may now be had to Figs. 4, 5 and 6 which indicate the manner in which the adaptor or supporting member is constructed for the purpose of locking the abrasive segments illuswA trated in Figs. 1 to 3, to the adaptor. The adaptor or supporting member comprises a base plate I5 including on the working face I6 thereof an annular flange I1 extending laterally from base I6 and having its outer peripheral surface 20 inclined inwardly toward the base of such flange. The flange Il is arranged at the inner peripheral surfaceV of the annular adaptor I5 and its outer peripheral surface Z corresponds 30 in curvature with the inner peripheral surfaces of the abrasive segments Ill, the inclination of surface 20 with the vertical being approximately ve degrees in order to secure full contact with the innerl peripheral beveled surface Il of the 35 anchoring portions of abrasive segments l0.
A plurality of radially directed ribs 2l are rigidly attached, integral in the illustrated em bodiment, to the adaptor I5 and arranged in equally spaced relation circumferentially of the adaptor I5. 'Ihe ribs 2| extend laterally from the working base I6 of adaptor I5 and the lateral faces 22 of each rib 2l incline inwardly at an angle of approximately five degrees toward the base of each rib. As indicated in Fig. 6, the 45 beveled holding surfaces II of the end faces of abrasive segments I 8 are parallel with the inclined surfaces 22 of ribs 2| so that flush frictional Contact will be obtained between the ribs 2l and the abrasive segments I0 with the pro- 50 ,tector strip I2 in compressed condition between the clamping surfaces Il and 22. The lengths of the abrasive segments I0 in a circumferential direction are such that compression of the protector or packing strips I2 between the ribs 2| 55 and the abrasive segments and between the flange I'I and the abrasive segments will be approximately equalized when the abrasive segments are clamped in their radially inward working position with reference to the adaptor I5. The ribs 2I space the abrasive segments, which permits the grinding wheel, during operation, to clean itself of dust and particles of abrasive and metal.
Reference may now be had more especially to Figs. 4 and 5 which illustrate the arrangement of a plurality of clamping elements 25, one for each abrasive segment Il), relative to the adaptor I5. The clamps 25 are of substantially L section along any radial plane taken therethrough, the upper legs 26 extending laterally from the working face I6 of adaptor I5 to a height approximately equal to that of the inner peripheral flange I'I.
The inner peripheral surface 21 of the upper leg 26 of each clamp 25 inclines inwardly toward the base of such upper leg at an angle of approximately five degrees in order to secure full frictional contact between such inclined surface 21 and the beveled holding surface I I at the base of each abrasive segment I0, a packing strip I2 being interposed between such cooperating clamping surfaces. Each clamp 25 is adapted to be drawn radially inwardly relative to the adaptor I5 by means of a pair of socket head screws 30 threaded to the adaptor plate I5 and extended in a direction substantially parallel to a central radial plane through the abrasive segment adapted to be clamped thereby. In order to prevent bending of 'the socket screws 3E! or outward deflection of the legs 26 and clamps 25, the lower leg 3l of each clamp makes a bearing on the base surface of a groove 32 formed in the back face 33 of adaptor plate I5. 40'
This bearing engagement of the lower legs 3| of clamps 25 with the base surface of groove 32 maintains the inclined surfaces 2l of legs 26 of the clamps in parallelism with reference to the cooperating beveled holding surfaces II at the outer periphery of the base of abrasive segment I0.
It is noted that the abrasive segments I are accurately formed as to size and contour so that tightening of the socket head screws 30 will move the clamps 25 radially inwardly and substantially equalize the pressure between the beveled or inclined surfaces 2l), 22 and 21 of the adaptor and the cooperating beveled holding surfaces I I of the abrasive segments with the protector or packing strips I2 interposed between such holding surfaces. In this manner, radially inwardly directed movement of the clamps 25 relative to the center of the adaptor I will cause the abrasive segments to be locked to the adaptor in dovetail fashion with approximately equalized forces being exerted by the flange I'I, ribs 2|, and clamps 25 in directions substantially normal to all points at the base of the lateral surfaces of the abrasive segments I0.
The strap band 35 is preferably arranged above the clamps 25 and tightened by means of a pair of socket head screws 36. This prevents the abrasive segments Ill from exerting excessive centrifugal forces upon the clamps 25 when the grinding wheel is operated at high speeds.
As many changes may be made in the above constructions, and many apparently widely different embodiments of the present invention may be had without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter shown in the accompanying drawings or contained in the above description shall be interpreted as illustrative and notl in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
A segmental grinding wheel comprising a circular adaptor including, on one face thereof, an annular flange concentrically secured thereto inwardly of its outer periphery and having its outer peripheral surface inwardly inclined toward the base of the flange, radially directed ribs of uniform width throughout their lengths flxed thereto and having their lateral faces inwardly inclined toward the bases of such ribs, a plurality of inwardly movable clamps adjacent the outer periphery of the adaptor, said clamps having their inwardly directed peripheral surfaces inwardly inclined toward the bases of the clamps and being of substantially L-shaped cross section along any radial plane passing therethrough, said adaptor being provided with an annular groove formed in its periphery and its back face, opposite said one face, for receiving and guiding one leg of each of said clamps, a plurality of abrasive segments each having a plane grinding surface and an anchoring base provided with upwardly and inwardly inclined surfaces on all lateral faces thereof, said upwardly and inclined surfaces being complementary to the corresponding inclined surfaces 'of said flange, said ribs and said clamps respectively, the construction and arrangement being such that said abrasive segments are spaced from each other by said ribs with said spaces being of uniform width throughout their length, and means for moving said clamps radially inwardly toward the center of said adaptor to clamp said abrasive segments to said adaptor with the inclined surfaces of the anchoring portions of the abrasive segments contacting all of the inclined surfaces of said flange and said ribs and clamps.
